| Originally posted by NYCTrancefan Sweden is a small homogenous, socialist nation that can afford to an extent to have such social policies in place. You pay your high taxes and expect the state to provide top notch healthcare, unemployment, sick leave benefits, etc. The reason that I say to an extent is that policies like these inevitably run up against a wall in lean economic times as well as the population continues to grow older. The main problem of these nations is birthrates have plumetted. Germany, Norway, Denmark, Sweden all of these places have to find ways to continue to finance those very generous social policies that are in place and in some cases reform it through cutbacks or increase already high taxes which is not likely. So cutbacks are the only sound option. |
