It all depends on the time, and those years he was number one he was for a reason wasnt he.
I dont know much of Oakie, BUT, its the question you asked which will be a problem. Its all personal opinion.
In 5 years, they will probably say "Was Tiesto the best of all time?"
As of today ....... probably. As of tomorrow ........ maybe.
Oakie was great, theres no doubt he was a tallented man, if you love him, then good for you
As for me, i think Armin will be the best ever, he's only 29 and already #3, He created Blue Fear, the "Blue print" for trance today, and the way he talks about trance in the future, where he wants to take it, and his radio show ASOT, only makes me believe he will be around for a LONG TIME at the top.
Either way glad you found what you believe to be the perfect sound
Oaky and sasha got me hooked... what can i say. They moved away from trance cause they knew the sound was at its highest point in 99. Smart move.
as much as i love Tiesto and his 99 innercity set being my all time favourite, I must hand it over to Oaky. This man is the definition of the dance scene without a doubt, and is largely responsible for what it is today (as you can tell by his confidence to do wateva he likes with tracks like Starry Eyed Surprise) !
As 1990 is the year of the pig and 1991 year of the rat etc, 1999 was the year of the oakenfold. Not only was his mixing flawless, his track selection was out of this world. I heard he actually paid Ferry Corsten 750 quid for the Out of the Blue vinyl before it was released.. he knew what he is doing!!
hands up to this legend!
More like, year of the gorilla

Yep Oakey was fantastic, if not revolutionary. I think dj-wise, has been one of the biggest influences on the sound and growth of trance as a whole.
I'm surprised there are no Oakey bashers in this thread! Usually every Oakey thread ends with a flame war...
even I like oakey
even some of his latest stuff!
oakenfold in his hayday made electronic dance music!
Question: Was Oakey the best ever?
Short Answer - Yes with an if....
Long Answer - No with a but....

well said lethal
i think armin is better, and i enjoy his stuff more, and i agree he has done alot, and his radio shows kickass and are still going strong after 152 weeks in a row and still not stale at all, which shows just as much about the trance producers there are out there, as it does about armins delivery. i was just saying that Oakey's set at Gatecrasher is just the best live set ever in the history of trance and the universe.
(in my opinion)

I think the title of this thread says it all.....was oakenfold the best ever, as opposed to is he the best ever... Yes, I think he was the best, in the late 90s...he was the best then, but imo he isn't the best now....i respect him greatly for what he did in the past, for sure
so yes, in 1999 he was the best ever - he was the best of everyone who'd come along up to that point in time....but now, in 2004, i don't think he's the best ever - there are others who've done things after what he did back then who are, quite simply, better...
so basically....was he the best ever?? YES!!! is he the best ever?? NO!!!
(and just to add...Oakenfold was who got me into this scene...I hated the EDM I'd heard with a passion...but one day I was in sanity, and saw Oakenfold's Travelling - i had no clue who he was, and no interest in the genre, but a lil voice in my head told me i needed to get that cd...so i did, and it started me on the path i'm still on now
but, i most definitely wouldn't buy the stuff he produces now....for me, he's had his day...but he deserves much respect for how he was in his day!!)

Space Brothers - "Heaven Will Come [Olmec Heads Vocal Dub]" 78:50 13. CJ Bolland - "The Prophet" ----- 86:08 Thats the Gatecrasher set, imo THE best 86 mins of driving euphoric trance in 1 single hit i have ever heard. AND PETE TONG in the middle of it: "I said nice one bruvva" "I SAID NICE ONEEEEEEEEE" hahah id give away a lot to be there that nite. Like Matt_A said Oakie @ china was playing breaks, but was still able to capture this underlying beat, drivy beat throughout the whole set, that towards the end just explodes with skip raiders. I have respect for Oakenfold, he moved on, he got the best he thought he could get out of the sound so he moved on. Sure he hasnt found the same success, but only time will tell, but i have a feeling a true artist like oakenfold will only be kept down for so long. |

Word.
However, you could just use my method and never listen to ASOT. That way, every new tune you finally hear is usually gold.
Hallelujah Webby!!! ... well said... we're over trax before the non-geeksters have even heard any of it (which is 98% of the people in attendance at a gig) .... the few good trax on asot that is
I have never listened to ASOT before really. I can hear most of it already when i mix in my room
Seriously, Armin does have good tunes but they are getting abit repetative. For me its all about the Global dj broadcast with Markus Schulz. That sound is the sound i think alot more people are getting into these days especially me. Love it
Back to Oakenfold. Not best ever but best sets so far in the history of trance music. I think Tiesto will be put down as best ever. Crazy productions, crazy labels and crazy concerts that had not been done before he did. He is the innovator more so today than any other.
