-- progressive , love it? hate it?

Im stuck right between the two,

Progressive has a lovely flow to it and i think requires a better understanding of the music and its structure. When its structired well in a set its perfect.

Epics build ups and melodys tend to wear out very quickly for me as their so dramatic, overplayed and sometimes get cheesy.

I tend to like something in the middle.

PLEASE I BEG do NOT change this into a definition of prog thread, start a new one... i hate going thru all this crap
when im pretty sure (at least i do) i have a good grasp on what is and isnt prog. this thread is for who DOES/DOENST like it, not what it is.. thanx

dude im not too sure anything's wrong with his sound, but i know i dont like anything of his in the past year. unfortunate. but i loved his older EMs, and GU, so you tell me whats wrong? i dunno now i try to like it but it seems just tooooo slow.. i cant even really chill to it.. and yes, old sasha stuff rules.. "go on a little journey" are you referring to sasha @ twilo? i acquired that monster set recently... "Let me take you..... on a journey.... on a journey.."

oh my goodness. that is such a monster progressive track.
i cant stop blasting that set in my car. which is weird for prog
id be glad to hook anyone up with this

also i would love any digweed trance set, i am sure of it... tho i dont think he will spin it ever again (cd 2 GU sydney)

enuff flaming.

Posted by patticus on Aug-12-2001 11:24:

just for the record, sasha and digweed IMHO are not prog trance djs, but prog house.

because there is also a lot of great progressive trance out there.. check out some of nick warren and dave seaman stuff.
i LOVE it. not so much prog house

but guys like steve gibbs (aka altitude).. pete lazonby.. trancesetters..

Would you consider Armin "Blue Fear" (Trouser Enthusiasts EBE Mix) as progressive or any Trouser Enthusiasts/Mekka/Monoboy/Heliotopic stuff?

BTW I love Sander Kleinenberg "Sacred"!

Posted by rawkus rowan on Aug-12-2001 11:46:

i love listening to progressive house and trance when i'm at home or in my car, but when i hear it in a club it just doesn't make me wanna move at all. i need the more uplifting and banging stuff to dance to.

RR

Posted by patticus on Aug-12-2001 13:05:

paul wilson... no... its just trance id say...
more progressive than tiesto of course, but still..
TE and monoboy definitely more progressive...
but i mean i feel that's like oakie style, not really under prog trance

of course i wouldnt give a rats ass if someone called it progressive
but dont say like mekka - diamondback is

are you feelin me yet

sander - sacred is awesome, now THATS progressive trance. (maybe even house? maybe)
i like his productions but not sets

Posted by ABTsportsline on Aug-12-2001 13:31:

you guys are going to have to listen to Patticus on this one, because he is right i'm afraid... Digweed and Sasha are progressive house, as is D:Fuse...

But what really burns my butt about this whole thread... is you guys omitted progressive TECHNO!!! My favorite kind!
(Patticus where were you on this one!? LoL....)

By the way, this is a "love it/hate it" thread!

Progressive House is what you hear in Digweed/Sasha/DFuse sets... (love it!)
Progressive Trance is what you hear in Judge Jules/Marco V & sometimes Tiesto sets... (really love it!)
Progressive Techno is what you hear in Picotto sets... (doesn't ever get any better than this!)
Uplifting Trance... well, you'd have to be an idiot if i had to explain this one to you.... (uh... well... JK, i love it!)

Cheers!

Posted by ABTsportsline on Aug-12-2001 13:35:

Damn i forgot "Hard Trance"....

Well, i guess this is what you will hear Picotto throw down occasionally on his more "softer" sets, and I consider a lot of Jules' Qontact set to be this....

NEways, ta ta for now!

-ABT-

Posted by patticus on Aug-12-2001 13:43:

dude i dare say you're off on the prog trance tip
judge jules is just a dance dj. hahahaha.. cheeze all the way
maybe armin is somehwat prog, id say the epitome is dave seaman tho. of progressive trance

i forgot about the techno cuz i never thought of it as prog techno, just techno!
i guess however that excludes prodigy and chem. bros..
so from now on it'll be prog techno..

progressive trance is tiesto's new set from ibiza, some of armin stuff, maybe christopher lawrence
ah - dj remy's PRODUCTIONS would be a fine example.. he spins a softer kinda progressive techno, im realizing.. (abt do you like him?)marco v's mysteryland is a good one too, nice pick there

Posted by ABTsportsline on Aug-12-2001 13:46:

Judge Jules is cheese???!! On BBC1, yeah... the Ibiza Annual CD's no doubt! But his recent livesets are anything but my friend! My opinion, anyways...

Posted by patticus on Aug-12-2001 13:48:

recent set being qlimax (pretty good but commercial), everyting else i heard from him is cheddar

all his EMs i would say

Posted by Paul Wilson on Aug-12-2001 13:49:

I hate Judge Jules!!!!

He supported Ian Van Dahl and Public Domain, I can't believe so many people seem to like him.

heheh, i was wondering where you were on this one Paul

I don't like who he supports or what he stands for... man! I bet you actually "listen" to the lyrics in non-techno songs, eh? LoL... haha, jk!

I really don't care about what goes on "behind the scenes"... just what my ears hear! he could be the biggest wanker on the planet - as long as the music's good! him being a schmuck doesn't change my life one bit, ya know?

Patticus - I saw jules in february, and he spun a hard set, much like Qontact..... which is why i said that previous statement.

"commercial"..... ohhhhh boy........

Posted by patticus on Aug-12-2001 14:00:

whatwhat?
you dont think so?
ima dig up teh tracklist..i meant qontact anyways
RBA hugely commercial
Joy Kitikonti (yes this too)
Hi-Gate? CMON
Members of Mayday
AND Angelic (its not that one of these tracks is so horrible, its the combination.... screams... mainstream appeal)
Witchboard Project - The Fog (sounds like speed garage gone wrong, if possible. like a horrible james holden track)
Madonna (well i like it, but what did i just say.. commercial )

do you see what im getting at?
airwave i love that track but its not really subtle either.

the guy just pounds out floor-fillers

Posted by ABTsportsline on Aug-12-2001 14:28:

i guess you got me here.... no doubt about the "commercialism" of some of these songs...

You know i just HATE that word "commercial" because everyone uses it to describe EVERYTHING that isn't PvD or Tiesto...

-ABT-

Posted by Cable on Aug-12-2001 16:29:

yeah the word 'commercial' is used way too often...

Posted by Eugene on Aug-12-2001 16:51:

The word "commercial" is used by stupid dorks. If at least you said "formulaic," I would know what you mean. Formulaic stuff is always uninspired. But commercial stuff can be pretty good.

Posted by shoXx on Aug-12-2001 16:59:

Talking love it

I love progressive and uplifting trance I can eat all sorts of trance.

Posted by krusader on Aug-12-2001 19:37:

i think that progressive, just like all other trance has its time and place... some progressive really good, but it takes an EXTREMELY talented dj to put together a set that takes you on a wonderful journey... it also takes much longer to take you on that journey than with uplifting it seems to me... i love uplifting... always have, most likely always will... i wish that one genre of trance wasnt so dominant in every year... im sure progressive was still cool back when uplifting was dominant... and now it seems fairly hard to find any good new uplifting tracks, as progressive is dominant these days

im rambling but oh well

well the word "stupid" is used by ignorant chumps.
i think those who made half an effort understood my point, like abt

i never said commercial stuff wasnt good, if you read my post.

anyways not to fight with abt but ive heard both PvD and Tiesto described as "poppy anthem trance"
if that doesnt sum up the meaning of commercial, i dont know what does.

in my belief, tiesto more than pvd

Posted by Kurve on Aug-13-2001 00:12:

i dont really consider Progressive Trance......really Progressive......stuff that PVD produdes or oakie spins or max grahm thats progressive trance........... but when u consider real progressive its Progressive House....stuff under Bedrock like digweed, sasha etc....... Progressive trance is still little more higher pitch and has more trance qualities........ Progressive House is more low pitch and more progressive in general speaking.....meaning different beat structure basslines and style from the norm...... Real Progressive isnt trance...... and my views of progressive trance is still more Trance related then progressive related ..... thats how i see it

Posted by Renegade on Aug-13-2001 00:54:

Yeah, I don't really see any point in trying to make a distinction between prog house and prog trance. I mean, the prog that we're talking about here falls somewhere in between house and trance in the first place - you're not going to be able to point to any progressive set or track and say with absolute certainty "that's purely progressive house" or "that's purely progressive trance". I just call it "progressive" under one big blanket term to ensure that I don't have to make that distinction.

Can we stop with the definitions now?

Posted by Daffer on Aug-13-2001 02:18:

Wow! such a big amount of opinions about this genere, i must say that ever since I started moixicng the progressive got me, but i also loove uplifting trance, and I try to use it as much as possible.
Than x for the replies
