Fucking n00blets. They hear a bit of shit trance and then judge trance by it. One day at school, because it was my b-day, I was allowed to get online and go to DI to start up a stream, and they had some guy mixing live right in the studio. I put it on, and only 1 person other then me liked it. The rest were a bunch of fucking jocks who think that rap is the only good music genre in the world.

speaking of general music culture. Most people are CLUELESS. They can't even make disctinctions between good and bad rnb/hip or pop. If it's on the radio it's good enough for them. They consider all the rest to be garbage. Don't believe they'll have a clue about techno when they don't even know what underground hip hop or what punk music is or what not.

But this is what most DJ's do All they bother to do is to beatmatch, and that's all.

Producers =/= DJ's... just because some DJ's produce music, it doesn't mean the concept of DJ'ing changed.

Well unfortunately not a lot of djs are technical or experimental at all.

If they are experimental they are either :
1. Rap/Turntablism
2. Dub
3. house
4. Techno
5. list goes on a tad more actually

Thats because almost all normal trance isnt suitable for that shit. Its far too melodic, and less emphasis is given to percussion, so its hard to be creative and fuck about a lot with it. Thats why i prefer mixing techno/hard house/tech trance etc.

So what if people like her are not the proverbial sharp tools in the shed when it comes to music? What is complaining about her going to accomplish? Are people like her bringing down the music scene?

Yes. They perpetuate the existence of cheese factories like DJ Sammy and Ian van Dahl. I suggest you give the girl a CD of _quality_ vocal trance to listen to, and if she doesn't like it then let her continue to listen to fruity crap that she calls 'techno'.

Not really, not even those 32-bar melody tunes (which are not that bad when dropped every now and then, instead of being played one after another). Although I'm a programmer rather than a DJ...

1) Build-ups: This gives you a lot of opportunity to play another music in the background and fill the "gap". Not to mention that (i don't know whether this is possible when you're playing live) but you could also play the build-up along with the final beats of the previous tune: this way, you don't have empty beats nor straight melody, but a combo of both (which makes the transition even smoother).
2) Harmony: Tunes with simpler harmonies fit better when played on top of each other (like Lucid's Out there with Robert Miles' Children) but when you have a music which is far too melodic, there's no problem if you play some tribal techno to fill build-ups or to strenghten the beat. If you have a sampler, or you can loop samples using something else, that's even better... a thing I like to do is to loop a random bar of an epic tune and develop it into a transition to another tune (usually not trance).
3) Crossing genres: Epic trance fits nicely together with nrg, hard house, tribal techno/trance, acid techno/trance... and if you have problems with the bpms, you can use the build-ups for this purpose

1. and 2. are not technical points but something you should consider basic and essential. 3. is not a technical skill... to an extent.

Name me ONE trance dj that really goes technical in his mix? ( no flame wars please )

Technical as in numerous cuts, playing around as much as possible while all in control.

That's good and all, but you still haven't really answered my questions. So what if they "perpetuate the existence of cheese factories"? As long as music has been around, I'm sure there's been one elitist out there that said some of it was cheese. Did the cheese single-handedly bring about the downfall of the entire scene?
