Since you all know I'm a newbie, I can ask this with pride. haha...What is the difference between melodic, progressive, jungle, house, ambient, techno, etc?

i pretty much know that i like trance best since all the songs I have are in the "trance" category, although some could be mislabeled.

HERE is a some kind of guide to the genres in electronic music even if some parts there are more or less wrong or otherwise twisted.

most are hard to define with words.

melodic (and along the same vein, epic) trance would be defined by the song "rank 1 - airwave", which is shit. basically without using musical terms I don't have the slightest about, the production work focuses on "melodic progression", synths sound all floaty and drawn out. yep thats what everyone calls "trance"

progressive - nobody can tell you what progressive is, because it's not a real genre. Leftfield started calling themselves "progressive house" back in the mid 90s. Apparently, a few years later, it sparked a fire up everyone's ass and they decided they would make a new "intelligent" genre. kind of like prog-rock. people will tell you gabriel and dresden are prog, james holden is prog, bedrock is prog, infusion is prog, luke chable is prog, deep dish... and then as if they weren't splitting hairs they'll say their are two different types "house and trance." This is when you realize you need to hook up with their crack dealer.

ambient - beatless or low bpm music, that simple. careful not the same thing as "chill" (wtf?)

techno - much hair splitting to be enjoyed here as well. All sorts of neat subgenres that only an adept technohead could tell "apart." basically a strong percussive groove. it makes trance looks sissy, lots of emphasized percussive instrumentation. Not much melodicness to it. adam beyer, dj rush, filterheadz, chris liebing, mauro picotto (careful, he lacks technohead cred).

drum'n'bass (jungle) - easily definable. The bassline is unmistakable as is the percussive patterns. really fast. Andy C is a big name....

The problem with doing this is that each person defines what the categories are to them, and how much subdivision is necessary.

If you like dance music period it's a lot easier to leave it at the 'major' categories, if you're particular each of those can in turn break down further and further, it becomes overkill in pretty short order.

Unlike some, I don't think the difference between, say Ambient and Chill is minor (I guess the best way I can sum up the difference for me is that ambient is like floating in ethereal space, chill is like sitting on a beach) but I can appreciate the fact that people who aren't overly interested in the two genres can lump them both together because they're both relaxed, sans bass, styles.

Basically, the more someone is into a given genre, the more likely they are to break it down into more categories, because they gain recognition of the fact that any category necessarily is including too many unique individuals to be an accurate description.

WOW! haha. thanks so much for the posts...they are super informative to this here newbie. i've only dabbled in trance, and I know what i like and dont like. ive looked at some progressive stuff and it doesnt float my boat, but hey to each their own...but i still might need to look into those peoples' crack dealer, maybe im on the wrong drugs.

anyway, techno doesnt seem to float my boat, i get a pounding headache when the music is just TOO damn fast. i guess i felt kinda out of it when everyone would have posts about prog, hard house, etc etc etc. thanks for clarifying it for me!

No problem, I know, it's a bit overwhelming when you first get into the music to see all of the categories that people name off...until you've been into it for a while, and gotten a chance to actually hear plenty of examples of each style then it's difficult to understand what they all are.

I will say that you should give Prog a try in the future, perhaps a year or so down the road. It's a genre that tends to grow on people given time. It's also a genre that is much, much better in an actual club as opposed to on a stereo at home.

I still highly recommend trying out some of Sasha's stuff in any case, songs like Wavy Gravy and Xpander are (neo) classics of the genre, and have pretty good cross-over appeal.

Way Out West is another group that are proggy, but accessable (try Intensify (Part 2) and Mind Circus (Original or Gabriel & Dresden Remix) for starters)

Techno is definitely an acquired taste, and is usually a bit much for me too! Course, the same goes for 'Hard Style' like Picotto, Marco V, and so forth.

Most people don't realize that 'Techno' is one of the few American dominated genres (Detroit)...I can't tell you how many people think that Germans 'listen to Techno', and (apparently) can't tell the difference between inorganic sounding music (the easiest way to tell Techno, at least by my standards, very ,computery') and the melody of Trance.

I guess some people only hear the bass...a shame, as they're missing most of the song!

It is far from being that simple
You can not generalize trance like that
It is a very very complex music genre and so are most other genres that are electronica.

where are the best places to get these songs and others? Im sorta in the same boat as The Peach, and I see on the forums a lot of various songs that people should listen, and I just would like to know where you guys find all these great works of music.
