holy shit, I made a reply in August of last year about this movie. I don't think I can watch this movie a second time. I remembered being scared shitless and depressed as hell after watching that movie. Makes your stomache turn. Argh..
With out a doubt one of, if not the best drug movie of our time, perhaps only beaten by scarface though not by much. To the guy that stopped watching it after the scene where she gets the television phone call, thats about a 1/4 of the way through, watch it again and be blown away by it. I think Marlan Wayans was perfect for the role in this film, sure he has been type cast because of doing movies like scary movie, and the wayans name sort helps the type casting along, but i cant think of anyone who could fill the role better.
The imagery and cinematography was also amazing. Darren Arronofsky's 'hip hop montages' are sometimes over used, but, always good and used properly. They help the transfer between scenes, and show repition, such as when Jared and Marlon are shooting up, and the montage is intertwined with Ellen's character repetitively drinking coffee. Sounds in these montages are also great, sounding sharp, but dirty. The scene where ellen is cleaning the house extremely fast is also great. That scene lasted either 8 or 18 seconds on screen, and took over 30 minutes to shoot. The imagery of Jared's arm towards the end and his disregard for it until its beyond repair really shocks the audience into watching the ending parts. The Tabby Tibbons infomertials and the way they look while Ellen's character is watching them on speed is great too, notice how you never see number three "This drives most people crazzzzzy"? Check the end of the post if you have the dvd 
The soundtrack is great as well and is so perfectly used through out the own film. Ive watched it a few times (3 or 4, I bought the dvd) and one time I just listened to the soundtrack since it if you get caught up in watching the movie you will miss it, which is good, it shows how subtle it is in conveying feelings. As in summer is light and happy, fall gets a bit darker, and by winter its all messed up.
The characters are good. However, summer should have been shown as much more happier. Maybe the main characters (except Ellen) just starting to get into drug use or being new at using drugs. I say this because in the end the only person I feel sorry for is Ellen (The scene after her friends visit her and sit on the bench holding each other brings tears to my eyes) since she doesnt knowingly become involved with illegal drugs and her dream of television and not questioning what the doctor gives her ultimately leads to where she ends up. But then again you could say that she should have stopped taking insane amounts of pills.
Last but not least, one of last scenes, where everything comes together and the soundtrack presents it self, along with the graphic imagery of *SPOILERS* the arm, ass to ass, prison, and the mental hospital, slowly building up until Jareds arm is cut off is unbelievable.
So in conclusion to this mammoth post, go watch requiem for a dream if you havent already. If you have the dvd which is loaded with extra stuff you can watch all of the tabby tibbons infomertials, go to the main menu and select marlon wayons joint. Do this by going through the three options, then going through the top to again and press left or right on the third option. I cant remember exactly how to do it, but fiddle with it and the joint is defineatly selectable.

Hmm.. Requiem for a Dream is a godly movie... Period... To those who do not agree with me - thy opinion counts not!!!

Requiem is friggin' amazing. I went and saw it the first time in the theater because I'd previously seen "Pi" and had been very impressed but Requiem completely blew Pi away IMHO.
The cast is superb and the story is the most darkly realistic portrayal of people in the midst of a downward spiral that I've ever seen.
Hubert Selby, the guy who wrote Requiem, has a serious gift for showing humans at their worst and most vulnerable. I know in the introduction to the book Aronofsky talks about how Requiem is such an odd book because every time something positive would normally happen to the characters something negative happens instead...by reading through it you eventually realize that none of the characters are the hero, rather, addiction is as it inevitably conquers and destoys the principals.
Unlike many movies and stories, Requiem isn't afraid to end on a sour (and hence, realistic) note. The soundtrack by Clint Mansell & the Kronos Quartet accents the mood perfectly and the film is probably one of the most darkly powerful pieces of cinema I've ever seen.
A word to the wise though, if you're renting/purchasing it make sure to get the *Director's Cut* and not the crap edit.

the only differences i've heard are that the climax scene (pun intended) is more vivid or less depending on which version. I saw this last summer as well and it really moved me. Gave me inspiration not to do anything further than alcohol or weed.
definitely one of my favorite movies . pi was good too, pretty confusing though.

Very distrubing and easily the best movie to watch if you're trying to give up hard drugs.
Luckily I dont do them hard ones, bleh, they're disgusting 
I loved Trainspotting, and a friend of mine recommended i saw this. still haven't seen it though. I'll try to get around to renting it soon
Great movie . And the violin track to it was cool as well, love any tune that uses samples from it , only 1 I know though ATM 
One of my all time favorite movies for sure.
And the OST is done by Krono's Quartet which are insanely good.
Oh yeah, Jared Leto (the main guy in RFAD) is the lead singer in a band called '30 seconds to mars'. They are actually really good. Check them out.
very good movie. the camera work is second to none. the split screens with the pills was perfect. the spill screen where one of them takes some drugs and goes into the eye,blood stream. was just amazing. if you vist the website it is quite trippy. also Darren Arronofsky;s pi is a great watch if you havn't seen it. should be intresting to see Darren Arronofsky's batman movie coming out..
pi was great and requiem for a dream.....i LOVE that movie..it's one of my all time fav's. i bought the directors cut dvd from deepdiscountdvd.com for 10 bucks. sooo good. can't say it enough.

ive watched both the edited version of this movie and the director's cut.. and WOW.. it has got to be one of the most intense emotionally distrubing and graphic but powerful movie...
i dont think u can watch this movie too many times just cuz there are so many little things that attracts your attention the more times u watch it... if u can bypass the initial shock or the disturbing feelings then do watch it more than once... i was in awe watching this movie and the cinematography of it... so unique.. like how the fridge would attack the mother, when she was all delerious from the drugs.... how when jennifer & jared were in bed togeather the way their hands moved across the body and etc. amazing sequence whenever they were thinking about drug or takin them they shows the syringe being filled up and the eyes dilating... the directors cut was by far more profound and graphic but then maybe again, it might just seem that way cuz i wasnt paying so close attention the first time around... some parts of the movie were just so grotesque and distrubing that i had a hard time stomaching it but others were just amazingly potrayed. anyone pick up at the end when all the characters are lying in the bed alone sorta cuddling their own body portraying the result of their addictions... man, that was powerful... the acting in this movie was amazing! esp ellen portraying the lonley ageing mother whose dream, to be on the show in her red dress worn to her son's graduation, had become a nightmare and causing her to become psychotic! damn,in the part where shes literally going insane looking like a homelss schizo on the subway, she had me totally convinced.. i was freaking out but yet part of me felt so sad and pitied her...
jared leto also did an amazing job portryaing the son addicted to heroin.. so thin and gaunt u could see his bone jabbing outa him (but he still looked hot 
)...
those u havent watched the movie. go watch it! the closer u are with the whole drug scene, the more impact this movie will have on u. even if have never touched drugs nor be around ppl that do, its still one hell of a movie.

i'm not an avid movie-watcher, but i must say that Requiem for a Dream is the most emotionally disturbing movie I have ever seen. *Spoiler Alert* especially creepy was the scene where Ellen Burstyn's character is high on speed and starts hallucinating, thinkin that the fridge is attacking her... o and the last five or ten minutes when the scenes cut from character to character, showing the horrible situations that each character is in.... gave me the friggin chills
and the soundtrack was CRAAAAAZZZZY GOOD
definitely one of the best movies i've ever seen... but not in a good, satisfying, uplifting way....
oh and btw, is the deepdiscountdvd.com version of Requiem the director's cut version??? i might buy it
this is really impressive... it should be more popular n well known as it is now... dito american history x

I might just buy this on DVD . I have it in DivX but that's it.
Ur right DAMO thats why i wanted ppl to look movies like this, so may they wake up a bit, and dont follow those fuckin directions where they r fored to nowadays

i saw hurlyburly again yesterday. i'd forgotten how much i liked that movie. if u guys haven't seen hurlyburly yet, def check it out too. not as emotional but a good flick nonetheless.
