i said SIMILAR.. technically will never be able to reproduce analogue sound because it is a DIGITAL media. However, after deciding to read up a little, I realised, like Nou said earlier, that it can reproduce 99.9% of the original analogue waveform.

HOWEVER, i don't think it will be mass produced anytime soon, as record labels, djs etc are just too familiar with normal cds at the moment. implementing a new technology like sacds in an industry may take a fair bit of time, but when the time comes, i don't think the sound quality will be something to worry about. Many can't even tell whether the dj is spinning normal cds or vinyls in a club nowadays, so sound quality-wise it shouldnt be a problem.

On a side note, I'm listening to my Ferry Corsten - Mixed Live DVD in 5.1 surround right now....

Another point I like to make is the limitation of vinyl. Dust, as we all know, is a huge source distortion for vinyl Everytime the needle runs over the vinyl grooves, microscopic dust is fused into the vinyl from the heat generated by the needle friction. Therefore the more you play your record, the further away from the original recording your record gets.

SACDs might not thrive in venues that can not fully appreciate it's technology but clubs that can will have a clear edge over clubs that don't. Besides, DJing isn't limited to clubs. I, for one, enjoy mixing at the comfort of my house for friends. Having surround sound tracks will definitely be a bonus to listeners that can support the technology. BT has said in a recent interview his next CD will be in surround sound. It takes 10 years for new technlogy to be embraced by the consumer market, perhaps then we will see clubs that can support surround sound acoustics.

Slightly off-topic, but everything I've heard says that the main reason Beta lost out to VHS was marketing. At the time, Panasonic (inventor of VHS) had supeior marketing abilities to Sony (inventor of Beta).
