intelligent and jazzstep SHOULD be separated. even if not usually done. Marcus Intalex, High Contrast and LTJ Bukem are the prime examples.

are you doing atmospheric dnb for Goldie as well? because people will call that intelligent dnb too and it's not jazzy.

Electroclash:
Ficherspooner - Emerge
Benny Benassi - Satisfaction (Is this really electroclash? I think it is)

Oh no! Satisfaction is definitely not electroclash. Electroclash elitists would die if they saw that. Electroclash is not really supposed to be that clubby, it's more emo/avant-garde/retro/post-punk oriented. ie. 2 many djs (definitely reference to their mix compilation AS HEARD ON RADIO SOULWAX for a review of the genre's evolution), Ladytron, Chicks on Speed, Fischerspooner, and Felix da Housecat being the most commercially oriented within the acceptable boundaries of electroclash.

Satisfaction is house, club music. Same with the electro-trance Ferry crap. Doesn't really fit with the electroclash ethos.

And tribal house, tribal techno, tribal trance, deep techno, latin house, latin techno,...

for Latin house---it's all about Masters at Work (Little Louie Vega).

tribal can be pure (old Tenaglia), go more proggy (Filterheadz) or more clubby trancy house (Robbie Rivera).

I'd nominate Shmuel Flash - Chilling Moments for Progressive House. Imho this is how proper prog sounds like.
Also I can't believe you didn't mention THE classic of the psy/goa genre: Hallucinogen - L.S.D.
Add Pleiadians - Maya and X-Dream - Coming Soon

I could write a paper on this, but I'm really in a hurry now.

Thing with progressive house is that it has evolved over the years. The tune that kicked it all off back in the day many believe to be Leftfied - Not Forgotten, and other stuff on the Guerilla record label like William Orbit - Water From a Vine Leaf or React 2 Rhythm - Intoxication. That sounds nothing like the progressive sound u get now.

What is called progressive house these days really evolved from the trancier stuff that djs like Sasha & Digweed played 96-99, and was called trance or progressive trance (stuff like Bedrock - Set In Stone, LSG - Netherworld, Atlas - Compass Error etc. When the whole euro trance thing kicked off big time in 1999, they didnt want to be associated with it and played darker stuff. The stuff thats called progressive house/trance now.

You have an impossible task ahead of you, sorry to sound a bit bleak, but you really would have to have been around from about 1987 and kept an interest in all genres throughout that period to be able to produce something that you felt was accurate enough.

However I cannot recomend this website highly enough to get a bit of background in. http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html Tjere are a few issues i have with the site, but basically its spot on.

The problem with the info on this site is that its also always going to be contempary, so its probably not a bad idea just to do a contempary guide of dance music and that way you wont get any problems.

Don't worry, I know genres evolve and I knew part of this story (thanks for telling me the rest ). It happens to every every genre. Trance nowadays doesn't sound anything like early trance, uk hard house now sounds different from those fanfares it evolved from, and so on. I'm not gonna ignore the history of the genres as this is the second most important part of any guide (the most important being the explanation of what things are)

It's not a matter of smartness (does this word exist? ). We both like the history of EDM so it's natural that we talk about it with each other. Besides being a patient teacher (as he's already explained a lot of things to me), he's a very intelligent person with interesting points of view.

If you guys notice, my name is on the credits of that guide (with my old screen name, Maaz) which means that we've been talking about it for quite a long time already

I see... well, I got some better recomendations in this thread, I shall replace finished symphony by these new tunes

I had chosen "one more time" because of its popularity actually, but indeed adding the other tunes from Mr. Bangalter is a good idea.

I was thinking of adding commercial tunes to show that achievment of popularity is not really a factor that define genres.

I didn't know electroclash couldn't be clubby, that's why I thought I'd better check the info I got As for Ferry's latest production, I'm thinking (haven't decided yet) of having a "regressive trance" or "experimental trance" somewhere in the guide so I could add trance/club tunes with this retro/experimental feel.

Yay hmm... however, I reckon "clubby trancy house" wouldn't be a good name for a genre because, if I started to divide genres that much, my work would be endless Can't I just have it under tribal trance (or house)?

Yeah I would also separate jazzstep from intelligent DnB, the difference is easily notable to most anyone.

Nu-Tone - Our House (Calibre's Lounge mix)
London Elektricity - Different Drum (Nu-Tone remix)
High Contrast - Return of Forever

As I said, I'm not a hardcore addict, just listen to it enough to know what it is, so if these aren't the best examples...well...ask someone else

progressive breaks:

momu - the dive
petter - these days

progressive trance:

vincent de moor - yellow subway
azior - sunset at myvatn (subsphere remix)
dj tiesto & junkie xl - obsession
bart van wissen - distant region
subsky - four days

i always thought of a 'deep trance' genre separate of 'progressive trance', though most people would say that it doesn't exist - it's probably just old progressive trance. pretty much all the tracks sasha & digweed used to play back then fit in there, stuff like

sasha - xpander
albion - air
virtua trancer - sex after dinner
gypsy - i trance you (pappa & gilbey remix)
cygnus x - positron

*edit* remember that 'progressive trance' is a very broad term used to described very different stuff! by one side, it's so fused with progressive house that one can't tell which is which - example: pig & dan - jelly. by another, it's fused with uplifting: airwave - ladyblue (original). and there's even progressive-psy, which has a very large scene, can't think of a good example right now
