20yo, DJing for 2 years, 3 club residencies, played at Godskitchen Renaissance Ministry of Sound (in Perth and Mexico) & started producing in the last month or so.

I'm always looking for ways to challenge myself with my sets and I think to go any further you really need to get into producing. I know I'm pretty crap at the mo but I figure you gotta walk before you can run, so to speak.

Absolutely,

Its great that you have already realised this at 20, and you are looking to challenge yourself and take a different direction with music. When you are djing, you are limited because you can only manipulate what is being played, when you produce there are no limits or boundaries.

I will say this though, producing isn't for everyone. Even if you are a kickarse DJ, and you have a great ear for mixing... it doesnt naturally mean that the composition will be at the same level... and therefore you will be "walking" for a long time.

If you take PVD for example who was a DJ prior to writing his own music... He was picked up by a label called Masterminded For Success in the very very early 90s... He had no idea how to write music, but the people he collaberated with did... Up until 96 or 97 he had other people helping compose the music...

So my point is it may take a while to grasp at first... but im sure you will enjoy the challenge.

Its been 8 months for me and I'm only just starting to get the hang of it. :\

I have been Dj-ing for 3 years and in that time I have gone from playing straight trance to playing all styles like breaks drum & bass hardcore etc. I have played at a few clubs. I even won a local dj comp last year. But I have gone back in the bedroom trying to perfect my mixing. I am heading to the UK this year and I am hoping to continue dj-ing there.

Kasey Taylor has been playing coming up to 20 years now and has never owned 2 turntables, I couldn't believe it when he told me. He's the only DJ to get an invite to play Bedrock twice in one year, headlined all over Europe & Asia and he's only ever had the one 1200 for listening to tracks at home.

No way you could get away with it these days but back then he started playing at a roller rink where no one really cared about beatmatching and he just taught himself



As for me, I'm coming up on 3 years in July. Only ever thought it would be a hobby but I've managed to play some pretty good gigs at some of the best nights in Melbourne. Getting to play closing set at Q Sunday after the StKilda festival is certainly the highlight. Especially now that the night has finished after over 5 years.

It's not hard to actually learn Djing with no decks. Maybe you don't have them but you use them nonetheless and that alone is what improves you.

3 years in the bedroom...1 year in clubs.
Resident at r00m, occasional Viper gigs, OnLine parties, 5am parties.. Altitude will be regular soon, and now I got my first Future Ent. gig.
I got lucky.
Level...6/10. (recent level up due to Thirst comp)
I always think I'm shit hot till I go to a San Tran and see the real professionals do it. Then I level up.

Oh, I also get this feeling I listen and mix more than most...
Probably spent 3 hours a day for the first 2 years and now about an hour a day..(and Dave is right....unless u wanna be tricky, u dont really need dex...Kat doesnt own any)....its all about track selection:|...and you only learn that from PLaying out.

I really don't get how dj's can not have decks... I mean, why not? You never get the urge to play at home? How many guitarist only play out? How many singers only sing when they have a gig? Well not me, i was just singing while walking home through the forest, and if i get an idea for a tune i start jaming away on my sampler or synth. What kind of music do people who don't have decks listen to at home? When i've had a tiring day in the lab I play tunes, almost never trance now days though. The first thing i bought when i got to German was a little stereo, decks and mixer. AUTA's have already heard about the mixer! Maybe for the pro dj's it's different... I've been collecting vinyl all my life so it's just a part of me... it just depends on mood if i'm going put on Hybrid, Deep Dish, Bob Dylan, BMW, Leonard Cohen, Everclear or DJ Vadim, Dj Shadow, etc... Have you guys got a deck for listening to tunes at home? What do you do if you don't? Have the tunes you want to here on CD as well?

Bought my decks in June 2003, so about 10 months now. I think I'm OK, though still not good enough to be playing out yet....

Those who've heard my mixing can probably comment more than I can

im 15 atm and i want to learn to dj. i decided to join the dj group at school because i would rather do that then spend $100 on a sprt medcines course....(enough rambling)

i suppose to be a dj u need decks and a mixer and im just not sure where to start. ill be using cds as vinyls are too expensive to keep on buying.

im at your whim. feel free to bend and warp me in anyway.

im 16yo, been mixing for about 2 years now. had big dance music/mixing influences in family, started off on the computer [traktor, etc] then moved to friends gear [cd decks and mixer] then brothers gear [3x 1200s + cdj100 + djm500] which is where i learnt to properly beatmatch and finally now have my own denons and mixer is on the way.

if you want to get into it, get a job, save and practice loads.

i guess i should start with programs on the computer....i swim 10 times a week so getting a job isnt really feasable

what programs should i get??

Traktor or MixMeister are probably your best bets, but if you want to really learn to DJ they aren't going to help you very much

I use Traktor, haven't tried mixing on either turntables or CD decks yet but i though using traktor (without using the beatcounters/waveforms) would be much the same as using CD decks though wouldn't it?

Well it is and it isn't, with Traktor you're still not physically manipulating things, it's all done with keyboard shortcuts and mouse clicks. The actual process is fairly similar though.

Goin on to 10 years now with this DJ thang...its like a chocolate mud cake...have too much and ur sick of it but u know u'll always want it again cause its just soo good...*did that make sense???*

i hear ya dude... except replace chocolate mud cake with fried chicken in my case.

got decks Last May 15 for my birthday... my own present to myself.

Mixed at home until I got a gig last November. Been doing clubs and parties since then.

Am lucky to have a music background, and also picked up mixing pretty fast ... played the drums at school so had a decent sense of temp and rhythm etc

Mind you.. I have probably spent more time behind the decks in the past 11 months than most of my mates have in 5 years... I'm addicted.

Been playing out for a year.

Used to mix almost everyday.

Now due to fulltime work and study i dont have a lot of time so its only once or twice a week, most of the time just in the club.

I wish i had more time and energy

Still developing my mixing, always changing with new ideas of mixing and tricks.

2 Years in June. Hopefully when i turn 18 i will start playing out lots more.

Im currently undergoing a revival of trance. These CDJ's are evil things. Now I can mix anything
(Expect to hear some old 50s 60s stuff in upcoming breaks sets )

Started playing round with virtual turntables in late 2002 and got 2cdj100s and a djm300 in december 2002. Was so frustrated and pissed off after about two weeks of trying I didn't touch them again til march. Been going solidly since and had my first gig in august 2003. Been getting gigs consistently since and have had some pretty big ones. Sold a cdj late last year and now my setup is djm 300, one 1200mk2, one 1210mk3 and a cdj100.

i was stupid enough too.. (cept instead of cdj100s got the pioneer turntables)
been at it 7 mnths can beatmatch alright playeed out once to a rnb loving croud.. played house.. first and last time i ever buy/play house records
