I'll be the first to admit, smoking is a disgusting habit. I haven't touched the shit and I have no intentions to. But I really hate dipshits like the ones running the Truth commercials that would label me as the next Hitler for taking a drag.

Ugh, those stupid Truth commercials piss me off. I'm sure it doesn't concern them that about a million people die in the U.S. each year from Heart Disease, about three times the rate of tobacco related deaths (around 300,000 yearly). And that's not even factoring in all the other diseases obeseity will get you, like cancer (about 500,000 yearly), stroke (about 150,000 yearly) or diabetes (about 75,000 yearly). But I don't see them parading the streets warning us of the dangers of McDonalds and Little Debbie snacks. I especially love the ones where they get some kids on camera talking about how their mother died of lung cancer. No shit? Guess what, your adult mother died sucking cancer sticks day in and day out with her own body, that she owns. Her choice may have been ridiculously stupid, but damnit it was hers to make, because her body belongs to her. I can take this screwdriver on my desk and jam it through my hand if I so desire - a stupid idea, regardless, but it's my hand, I can stab it if I damn well feel like it.

I wouldn't even care if all they did is ran commercials with straight information about the dangers of smoking, with no bullshit added on, and a nice little link to a website or something where they can get information on quitting or cutting down. Hell, they'd have my respect for that. But when they start doing these ridiculous skits and shit like they do, my appreciation for their underlying messages goes flying out the window.

Sorry, I'm just bitter tonight.

smoking is not "bad". ethics plays a roll if the second hand affects your family or friends, but that's it. it is bad for you, yes, but not "bad". if you want to make that choice in your life, go head, but make sure you realize the choice you are making. the longer you smoke, the harder it'll be to break the habit.

some simple rationalization.

Very true. Although I do beleive that smoking should be prohibited in public places (except in designated areas) so other people who don't want to breathe it don't have to. But these new smoking laws that ban cigerettes in private establishments are absurd. Who has the right to tell me that I can not allow people to smoke in the private bar that I own? If some people don't like the smoke, too fucking bad - go find another place to get drunk or club or whatever. You don't have a right to be smoke free in my private establishment.

Heh. As you can tell, I can get pretty heated on substance issues.
