and what a party that was !

Perhaps you are right about the scene being healthier back then. But isnt this is sad commentary on the scene in Toronto which so many people claim there isnt a problem with?

That's b/c most people on this board are referring to the "scene" as the trance/house/prog scene. That part of it is doing very well - techno, however, is still quite small.

agreed.

did they already make lineups for each complex? i don't think they did. i would assume oakey/cattaneo? in guv and cox/hawtin/acquaviva in kool haus.

and why be so negative and make assumptions? from your political rants where we assume you want us to vote pc; there are other alternatives that you don't breach.

give me a break on the flaming of oakenfold and whoever else you don't like. i've seen all these djs all over the place and they are good. i'm just glad i get to see them in toronto.

vote on june 28 and chill out on the 30th.

peace.

I beg to differ.

Ive seen them fill rooms three times the size routinely...

Cox yes, Hawtin not even close.

What he said
Cox yes, Hawtin not even close minus 500

Ive seen lineups 4 hours long to see hawtin...

He may not be a rockstar DJ but he has a huge fan base.

As for techno not being big. I disagree. MY opinion is that there are many underserved technoheads in Toronto these days. There are also many fans of other genres within this realm who would probably go crazy for techno if exposed to it. All i ever hear from Trance fans is "PLAY HARDER!" and it doesnt get much harder than techno a la carl cox. Mauro Picotto has gone pure techno these days and has won respect from both trance AND techno fans alike.

In a sense, piggybacking the rockstar dj with cox (who is also as big but just not in toronto) may be a good thing as far as exposure goes for techno. When oakie plays a crappy boring preplanned set and then people go completely crazy to Carl Cox, it will be a perfect contrast to say the least.

^^
I thought you said Oakie and Cox is a complete mismatch.

Posted by Jayx1 on May-25-2004 01:49:

i did. but what im also saying is that it may be a blessing in disguise.

Lets call it an electronic music "bait and switch" scenerio

LOL LOL

Please list some of the events where you saw these line-ups and all the main DJ's that were playing? I don't think I've ever seen a 4 hour line-up anywhere... not even close in fact. Unless the place had a capacity of 100 people, but even then, noone in their right mind would waste their time in line.

Hawtin has a huge fan base in Toronto and Detroit and a few other select places only, but it still can't compare to CC... He didn't draw a great crowd when I saw him in NY and he never drew that great of a crowd the times I saw him in SF. Even when I saw him at System a few months back, the place was packed, but I think most people made it in in a reasonable amout of time. Add to that the fact that System is a small club. If Carl Cox tried to play System, it would be utter chaos... the club just couldn't support it.

In this sense i agree but i think hawtin has the drawing power to bring a koolhaus sized crowd to Toronto.

Globally Cox owns but we are talking about Toronto (or at least southern ontario)

The parties im talking about are Industry Toronto (where 100s were turned away), Several parties thrown in Windsor including one a few months ago where a capacity crowd of 1500 resulted in a line up 2 blocks long being turned away.

Posted by torontobarfly on May-25-2004 07:17:

oakey will be in one room and cox and hawtin in the other......what's the problem????? why is this even an issue??

do you go to the local cineplex and complain that they're showing 12 different movies in the same building???

if you don't want to catch oakey stay away from his room!!!! this isn't the first time the guv has held events with different styles in different rooms....

4 hours eh? the longest ive waited to get into an event was 2+ hours for labour of love 2002, and that was a MASSIVE crowd/event as we all know...4 seems a bit much

Please name venues and the date. Otherwise I won't believe a word you say and just assume your talking out of your ass.

Many DEMF/Movement related events in the Detroit/Windsor area have those lineups...

As for local lineups being ridiculous, as much as ppl go on about the CNE/BLC events back in the day, the lineup to get in there was always massive, and I attempted attending 4 events in 99-00, and eventually sold my tix each time and fucked off to Industry... Doors open @ 9, I get there @ 12, and my friends who get there @ open are still near the middle of the lineup.

Each DJ mentioned could easily fill the KH up on their own. Oakie, Cox, and Hawtin have each developed huge fanbases, all quite strong in this region, and aren't here exactly frequently. Cox filled Industry regularily for years, and every Hawtin event I've ever been to in Ontario was always packed. Oakie has dropped off the charts over the past few years, and gotten quite stagnant, but is still a first step into the scene for a lot of people, and his fanbase is still greater than that of his detractors.

This event really isn't that different, or mind-shattering than what is offered from the Guv on a long weekend. Everyone is entitled to their opinions on each artist, and has had different experiences @ their shows.

But please refrain from the worrying and suppositon of what "may" happen, and how it "may" be negative. If that's how you feel, use that knowledge to positively change your night the way you think it will succeed, and keep the worrying out of it... you'll have a helluva enjoyable time if you do.

i don't think so.

if fucking sasha or digweed can't pack the kool haus then nither can hawtin.

only very few djs can in Toronto: PVD, Tiesto, Ferry, and Picotto.

Posted by The Highroller on May-25-2004 15:32:

i didn't think Hawtin could pack the KH either, but after seeing him last time at System in January, I'm not so sure.

That was the most packed i have EVER seen system

Posted by crazedcanuck on May-25-2004 16:40:

To be fair to any major DJ that plays here, when has anyone packed a large venue by themselves??? I'm willing to bet either never, or only a few times. Each major event has @ least 2 or more names, and add the fact there are usually 2-3 competing events offering the same lvl of talent or entertainment @ the same time, it's a rare occassion one place is packed for 1 person.

Posted by Cyrus King on May-25-2004 17:10:

Why the fuck do so many people complain about Lineups??? If you dont want to see oakie, DONT GO!

When there are prog dj's added to a trance Lineup, i go somewhere else... theres nothing your can do about it.. and you are lucky you caqn see your favourite dj's here

So many elitists on this board it makes me SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
