Dark Trance? Never heard it...It's somebody's personal interpretation of a particular feeling brought on by certain trance tunes. I wouldn't say they are dark I would say that you are feeling that they are "dark" in their sound (descriptive). It's all trance to me although, trance does set a 'mood' in a room and each dj is able to alter that mood.

Fark me, now another style of trance for everyone to stroke their chins at.

Listen to these songs, and the originals, and you will here the difference between Trance and DARK Trance

If anyone wants to disagree fine, this is my opinion and the one held by Armin Van Buuren, guess he knows a thing or two about trance

He does have a more deeper bassline than usual uplifting trance but as far as i know he plays progressive and progressive stuff usually has more darker driving bassline. All his stuff has nice uplifting melodies in them so i dont know how tracks that have awsome melodies in them can be dark at all.

You did say i could disagree

Dark Trance is not a genre itself, it's only used to describe a tune 'better' (if you want to)...
I love "dark Trance"! It's not so uplifting and has not so "happy" melodies, using more "subsonic" effects and/or acid lines. For me it's more hypnotic sinking into the rythm.
Examples are: M.I.K.E. (better known as PUSH but with this project name he produces more melodic sounds!),
L.S.G. aka Oliver Lieb
or labels like:
BONZAI (Trance Progressive)
Baroque (UK label and they suppose their style prog House but for me and others from the continent it's more dark trance than house - a mixture i would say)
