The same reason why a lot of the people who still like that sound hate tiestos more darker/techno direction.

Couldn't have said it better myself

This is kinda a silly discussion, but if you were at Avalon last night, then I think you'll know that he genuinely did play a fantastic set. Probably the best trance set I have ever heard since PvD played Avalon on Halloween 2002. Just go to the Avalon message board, and you'll find a dozen or so reviews from people who normally rank on trance djs all day, but who all gave shining reviews of last night.

I'm not trying to agree with Matt (dimethguy) on whether or not Armin van Buuren is the greatest dj in the world because last night's set was great ( I think that's silly, and it invariably leads to these pointless fanboy debates ), but plain and simple, Armin's set last night brought the normally ultra-cool Avalon crowd to a boil. Beautiful women were going crazy, ruining their perfect makeup and hair that they spent 6 hours on getting ready, stuck-up macho men in tight Armani tanktops were brought to tears, and even PvD showed up and was like, "Daaaaaamn". Oh alright, so maybe that didn't happen, but the set really did have the whole place bouncing. At one point the whole balcony was shaking from every single person up there jumping up and down. It was the kind of music that just naturally touched the right chord with everyone; the perfect mix of melodies, baselines, coolness, funness, and raw craziness.

I don't think his set at Avalon should be used to make any sweeping judgements of Armin, because I've seen him deliver completely medicre-to-poor sets at Roxy in NYC too. All I think you can learn from Armin last night at Avalon, is that Armin at Avalon is a great way to see him in top form.

And as I said in the NYC section already, if you missed the set last night, and you could have gone...................kill yourself. It was that good.

ps. Armin maybe played 10 minutes of uplifting, "fluffy" trance last night, the other 2+ hours were pure banging, nasty music.

That's a very vivid review that makes me curious. I'm willing to still give the guy a chance. He mixes very well. My only complaint is his dire track selection and promotion of that material. But from what you're saying it looks like Armin might be willing to take a move away from that now and then.

Stopping asot show will help...

If you're talking about Decadence then I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with u on that one. Junkie XL got 10000x+1 better reaction than AvB that night. He was plain boooooring

im actually looking forward to AVB when he comes to houston in june

im eagerly anticipating which RERUN oF ASOT he is going to play

Armin will forever hold a place in the Halls of Trance for Communication alone

Communication IS a fine release

That was the best trance set I've ever been at live.Armin's set was much better than his Roxy set in NYC and even topped his set from last October At Avalon which was hard to do.

You expect these guys to bring variety to their gigs when they're spinning 3-4 times per week. There just aren't that many good songs out there, no matter how many genres you employ.

Posted by GUBostonDubs on May-30-2004 08:08:

Ya its basicly a mashup of the original. It's on Armin's Essential mix from 4-25-04 if u want to hear it

Thumbs up

Completely agree, Armin seems the most down to earth and friendly DJ you could meet. Seems like an absolute geezer, I think he actually has a lot of variation in his sets, he changes his tracks a lot actually, no more and no less than other DJ's, unfair criticism imho

Posted by A.J. on May-30-2004 09:17:

YOU ARE ALL TRANCE NERDS

Maybe if you didn't listen to ASOT every week and download all of Armin's sets and all the latest tracks, then you wouldn't be so quick to bash Armin Van Buuren.

Here's an idea: don't listen to ASOT, don't download any more sets, don't download any more tracks and then go see him or any other DJ......you guys seem to forget that a DJ plays for the people in the club, not all the 1337 mp3 kiddies and ASOT nerds who have heard every set that he does and every new track a thousand times.

I seem to remember exactly the same arguments last year about how PVD kept playing the same sets over and over again. DJs play for the people in the club, not the people on the internet.

Absolutely 110% spot on.

Its just such a damn shame people do this, and you my friend, have layed it down very well Guess how many ASOT I have EVER listened to....

One...

ONE show of ASOT I have listened to out of the 150. And that was to listen to my online buddy, MK-S, get his remix of Haak - Frenzy, broadcasted from AvB!

I don't need to listen to AvB to get the latest tunes, I do it out of my own research - this is prolly why I see people's tracklistings looking exactly the same. How many people now have Markus Schulz in their playlists? See what I mean

AvB, wether you like it or not, is one of the best trance DJ's around, in person or online, he does the same thing he has been doing for many years, and thats rocking crowds.

Well put Vigilante!

Posted by GUBostonDubs on May-30-2004 10:30:

Friday Night was the best trance night in Boston imo since PVD Halloween of 2002 and this night may have even topped that.

Posted by sigmanova on May-30-2004 11:09:

i had to add my two cents into this

He played a great set, that's about all the original poster wanted to say. then there are flamers who say that he should stop ASOT. now that makes no sense.

i try to listen to ASOT every week if i can, because it's an opportunity for me to hear the latest tunes around and then hear a nice non-stop hour mix from Armin himself. Obviously he is doing something right if the majority of his listeners continue to tune in every week. After all, he doesn't make ASOT sets to please a single person, there are compromises to be made when YOU are behind the decks.

Armin can mix at times, and in other times he's not so good (Live @ Sublime Sydney 1/23/2004 *cough*) but if the man can put on a show when he goes on live, have many fans including yours truly fanatically devoted to his weekly show, and have whatever track he plays gets hyped for more than it is worth, then the man has to be doing something right.

tracks in his live sets from his ASOT? of course!, not everyone has the opportunity to hear these tracks over and over again (i bet alot of the TA's have ripped livesets and i believe some TA's judge DJ's on their livesets without actually attending the event...like last year's bashing of Tiesto and PvD)

anyway that's just my two cents, aside from everything, he's #1 in my book

Posted by Torley Wong on May-30-2004 11:27:

If Armin's doing ASOT, and people are tuning in and enjoying it -- which they are -- then by all means, he is entertaining and perhaps even filling a need, and I encourage continuation of this.

I don't see why a fuss needs to be made

'Cause otherwise... it's just...

REDUNDANT!

All the AUTAs thought that set was awesome at the time! They were raving about it for weeks after.......but then some people had their doubts after they heard the liveset recording. Everyone still had a great time though, by the sounds of things.

Hehe that set was only supposed to be kept quiet among aussie TAs, but it has spread all over the place.
