Woot!!
Dj Sammy - Heaven only on place 95 i'm dissappointed... That list actually seems quite good for being something MTV has put together...

Shockers:

PvD - For an Angel got beat by 4 Strings - Take Me Away and DJ Quicksilver - Belissimma. Have you listened to Belissimma recently and reminded yourselves of how rubbish it is?

FSOL - Papua New Guinea coming in at 41!

DJ Jean - The Launch (enough said)

DJ Sakin & Friends - Protect Your Mind at 52 (listen to the Lange remix of that today is you have it, its still awesome today)

I think For an Angel and Tell Me Why should be swapped round

Where MTV got it right

In general, its pretty good as some say for MTV bsaed on the amount of airplay that they give trance

Putting DJ Sammy at 95, bearing in mind that made No.1 in the UK singles chart. 95 is where it should be

Putting Fragma - Toca Me instead of Tocas Miracle which was the released version in the UK. Not a fan of that winey vocal

Well, at least something fairly worthy won it, even if it's not exactly the most "anthemic" trance ever. There does seem to be a lot of incredibly random decisions in there. Why Komodo got in instead of Lizard by Picotto is beyond me.

In my opinion this isn't trance, but assuming it is it should be at number 1. Were you surprised it did so badly, or did so well?

I guess you are right, it isnt trance but its been around for so long still making appearances in live sets and on compilations in numerous guises that I thought it would have been higher up

We cant blame MTV.
They dont know jack shit about trance, not even whats trance or not. The thing that annoys me is that they even try.

Of course we can...they are MUSIC television... if they are going to pretend to be a music channel (note they NEVER play music anymore it seems) then they should at least get their shit right... That's like saying you can't blame a car dealership for rating a Camaro as a better/faster sports car than a Ferrari... that's just bullshit.

Fuck MTV and their couch.

Congrats to MTV!

Regardless of what anyone says, there should be only one track name taking the top spot. Cafe Del Mar - 3 in 1 mix. Yes, it is old, and yes, it is diverse in prodcution style. But it is without doubt one of the most recognised tracks of our time. Most of us have witnessed the crowd reaction.

I would argue that is most known amongst people that know trance... for your run of the mill person who knows nothing about trance I don't think that is the most identifiable song... some crap like Heaven or Kernkraft 400 would be more identifiable I feel.

Which makes sense, because we are talking about the top 100 trance tunes.

Additionally, I'd often equate "anthem" with a bold, epic feel... like something that might accompany a dramatic action scene in a film if the music was not traditional orchestral.

Something that calls the listeners to attention and inspires, like a National Anthem -- it rouses up emotions, and often will contain multiple builds and climaxes. In other words, dynamic contrast. If you can march an army to it and give a grand speech whilst doing so, it just might be . . . an anthem

Another common element of trance anthems are snare rolls... when you hear a snare drum or other sharp percussive instrument rise in volume on top of the mix, and go

CH-CH-CH-CH-CH-CH-CH-CH-CHCHCHCHCHCHCHCH *CYMBAL BANG!!!*

i should add, wild snare rolls are often found mating with the infamous "climactic air swoooooooooooshhh" and the "domestic reversed cymbal".

All jokes aside that is the best description I have ever read in words of the ups and downs of trance(climax), i can feel it by just reading it

Ditto - I was expecting a lot more shit but they have some legitimate classics on that list.

what is it with "cafe del mar" theres that track "Energy 52 - Cafe del Mar" but theres also those Cafe del Mar comps which have various artists. So.... whats the dealio? is there some sort of connection here? if not, then where did they both get the name "Cafe del Mar" from?

I believe Cafe del Mar (the compilations) is a chillout series.

I concur. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

This is unforgiveable!!!

About the "ANTHEM" thing.... see, I thought it was a "type" of trance...
Like Epic trance as opposed to say, Hard Trance or Dream Trance as ISHKUR would say.

dunno.
