i just bought my first digital camera two weeks ago. i got the sony t1. like mentioned above, the movie mode rocks. however, either i suck at taking pictures or this camera isn't very good. my friend has a cannon and her pictures were much much better than the pictures i was taking and we were taking the same exact pictures

Take it back....for real. You get a much better camera for your money in a Canon. Sony is a fucking rip off. The memory cards you have to buy can only be sony...blah blah blah...they are so expensive!!! Plus I never had good luck with sony products.

yea meng, i went to radioshak just to buy an ac adaptor for my canon and the voltage requirement for canon was somethign like 4.2 and radioshak only has 4.3v. The guy didnt want to sell it to me cuz he was unsure if it would be safe for the camera.

so unless someone knows, i might be arsed in gettin a canon ac adaptor. . . .:lame:

As a pro photographer (Ados Photography), I highly recommend the Canon Powershot A80. It's reasonably priced, very compact (fits in my jeans pocket along with a massive number of keys), it has the best color accuracy of any consumer level digital camera and is surprisingly easy to use with insane battery life. The flip-out LCD is suprisingly handy, too, protecting the screen from my keys (among other jobs).

It's not perfect, of course. It's 4MP (big enough to make a nice 8x10) and doesn't have the greatest zoom (I'm begging you, ignore "digital zoom." It's useless, it just does what zooming/cropping on your computer does, except it does it poorly).

what do you recommend in the prosumer/pro market for around $1500-$2000? Cannon, Nikon?

Canon or Nikon is a very personal choice. They both have full complements of lenses and unless you alraedy own lenses from one brand that will be compatible with the new body, it's a draw as to which is better. I personally use Canon, but I do my pro work with a fully manual Canon FTb (you'd be surprised how nice it is to have a camera with virtually no electronics made of good metal). Just remember, once you make your choice, you're committed. You'll be buying that manufacturer's lenses and you'll be locked into their systems until you decide to buy an entire new set of lenses/bodies.

Are you looking for a digital SLR in that price range? Take a look at the Canon EOS-10D and the Nikon D100. I recommend Adorama for good deals and respectability, but there are lots of good stores.

You might want to consider getting a lower grade camera body (maybe a Canon Digital Rebel or Nikon D70) and spending the extra money on lenses. Lenses are always the most expensive and most critical part of any camera system, don't be cheap.
