You have an acapella running on a third turntable, you play the transition, bring in the acapella layered over a melodic trance tune. Sounds wonderful if you know what you're doing. Very simple in theory, a lot harder to pull off.

yeah, it's a good thing to play with acapellas, like to tease vocals before you bring the track in, or maybe you have a very odd track, you add some vocals of a known tune to it, you have a nice way to get the crowd hyped.

and if you play techno with 3 decks, or just plain any music, but yuse more than 2 decks, corssfaders are out of the question. sure, you could still use em, but it'd be more of a hassle than a benefit.

how do you get accapellas, ive never seen one in stores? and i think he reffered to taking all the other parts of the song out to make an accapell, possible or not?

the crossfader is designed to make a djs life easiar.....but everyone seems to think they have to do it the harder way to"be better" or because they get better control......like i said i was on channel faders for 4 years then went to the xfader for the past 2......i get better control with the crossfader....

i think you will find that it really totally depends on which mixer you are using, and what you are using it for. some mixers have adjustable curves, most don't. i dont think its anyone thinking they have to do it the hard way, there is no hard or easy way (how hard is moving a fader.. regardless of which it is? ) if you get better control with the xfader then more power to you, but in my books a 60mm fader is better than a 50mm fader (well.. 25mm if you split it in half, like a xfader)

regarding boomer's post.. that wll only work on mixers which have infinite eq cuts on the eq knobs (again, most moixers do not), other than that you would have to use a channel fader otherwise you will have your other track being back-cued over the track thats playing...

re accapellas, you can find them on seperate vinyls in a good record shop, sometimes they also put them on the release vinyl. failing that you can get most of them from other places which are naughty

When I first started out I was using the x-fader. I started experimenting with using the channel faders and I felt that I had a much better feel and more control for my mixes. Now I just use the channel faders and the eq for my mixes.

i use channel faders since im mixing from vinyl to cdj's also..its alot easier for me to keep control of the mix. How do u guys use your eq set at ie..bass, mids, highs knobs at 12 o clock or 1 o clock or whatever?

I'm using everything, ie, x-fader and channel faders and eq's. But I also use any combo of these. I play prog and trance and it works well for both styles.

I was using just channel faders and eq's but a while ago now a mate showed me a good way to use the x-fader as well.

OK here's an example, for mixing track 2 into track 1. Right to left on the decks.

Track 2 is cued and released, it's channel fader is at 0 x-fader is 1/4-1/3 to the right. bass usually at bout %30 mid and highs at 9 o'clock.

I then gradually bring channel fader 2 up to 100% usually over 2x32 beats, then over the next 2x32 wind the treble and mids up to 100 %, while simultaneously cutting back the mids and highs of channel one to 9 o'clock'ish or less, and also taking a little out of the low's to keep overall level even. then right at the end of the 4th 32, quickly pull the lows of track 1 back to 9 o'clock, nudge the x-fader 2/3 across and snap the eq on the lows of channel 2 to 100% at the same time. this will leave the 1st track in the background and bring the 2nd right in on the 1st kick of the 5th 32. Then i fade out track 1 using eq's and channel faders...

Just one method, but it think it sounds pretty good, and gives you that nice crisp change over between tracks. Means you need quick hands, but you get used to using fingers for the channel faders and eq's and your thumbs for the x-fader.

Hope that little essay makes sense.

oh you're telling me! nothing more embarassing than thinking you're top shit for nailing a flawless mix - when in fact the record coming in is muted by that damn x-fader! so you're there jackin off to what you think is a perfectly beat-matched transition, take your headfones off and WHOOPACHOW faint sound of channel 1 playing whilst channel 2 is dead silent - YOU SUCK.

lol
been there done that...

Can also be a pain on a mixer with assignable x faders too if you mis assign (small buttons)

All part of the learning curve...
