ENGLAND FANS TO OUTNUMBER HOSTS

From correspondents in Lisbon
June 24, 2004

ENGLAND fans have acquired more tickets than hosts Portugal for tomorrow's (AEST) Euro 2004 quarter-final.

"The English have snapped up most of the tickets for the game," sports daily A Bola quoted "official sources" as saying, adding many England supporters, with more purchasing power than their hosts, have trawled the internet to bag any ticket still going for the sellout meeting.

A Bola suggested some of the tickets have come from fans of Spain, who Portugal knocked out of the event and who had bought their own allocation hoping their team would make it to the last eight.

Portugal's Brazilian coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, said he is not worried that fans of his team are likely to be out-shouted by their rivals.

"I would have hoped for the stadium to be 60 per cent full of Portuguese people.

"But even if we only have one fan in the stands up against 64,999 English I would still call on him to back us with all his heart and soul and outshout them."

The level of interest in the match has been such that a massive queue formed early om Tuesday afternoon outside the Portuguese football federation for the last 500 tickets officially available, and by today the line of those who had endured an overnight vigil had stretched to some 200m long.

It has echoes of last year's rugby World Cup, where England fans appeared to even outnumber Australians at the final in Sydney.

Forget Euro...lets talk about the upcoming premier league season, where we shall see our good friend Stevie G in a nice blue Chelsea shirt

its Peter Kenyon up to his tricks, using the media to make the Liverpool fans turn against Steven Gerrard if I haven't told ya.

He will not go. Liverpool is in his blood. If he did, all members of his family would have to leave Merseyside, and never ever go back.

Posted by Sid on Jun-24-2004 17:46:

I have to agree Xavier. Kenyon has to be the biggest shit stirrer there is! But have you heard of the latest deal he is trying to compromise between the clubs? Apparently Chelsea are offering Duff, Cole and Parker PLUS 20 million pounds for Gerrard. That is a pretty good deal I must say, but none of those players are Steven Gerrard so we shall see what unfolds anyways.

Posted by Xavier on Jun-24-2004 17:57:

I must admit these Gerrard rumours are scaring the shit outta me. I don't normally believe transfer rumours, but I guess Kenyon has got to me

My hate for Chelsea is gonna reach the hate I normally hold for Man U. Oh how I wait and love for the day, when the Russian gets sick of his "short term" hobby, I bet Chelsea have no backup plan when he leaves

If Gerrard stays, for me it will be like signing a new player, coz of all thats gone on.

Posted by Sid on Jun-24-2004 18:06:

Yeah I guess even the tought of Gerrard leaving Liverpool would scare me if I was a Liverpool supporter.
