What constitues hard trance... I know its not hardstyle, but alot of "hardtrance" are just hardstyle blutoniumish tracks...

Posted by Torley Wong on Jun-28-2004 18:56:

"hard trance" sometimes makes as much sense as "freestyle".

then again, "trance" sometimes makes as much sense as "arp house".

confused? i know i am.

Hyar hyar!

Also BK does some wicked hard trance tunes (not hard house!!!)

i honestly dont see what the confusion is.. we all know what trance is right?.. well.. take that beef up the drums, intensify the synths.. up the BPMs by a few.. add some reverb... and what do you get? yup hard trance. hard trance is as varied as normal trance.. in the sense that dumonde are classed as hard trance.. sure its not hard as fuck, no killer drums or anything.. but theyre tracks are/were bass heavy, and that little bit tougher and thunderous than your average trance track.

so theres the lower end of hard trance.. the top end in my opinion without getting too deep into it... uberdruck... id say uberdruck is a monumentally perfect representation of hardtrance.. either under the uberdruck guise, or the crow [and even lazard]. ll his tracks have nice growling energetic kicks and octane induced synths. others similar are the likes of scot project. scot project has been puching the sound for years now.. and although not as common a name as he used to be 2-3 years ago.. his name is and always will be a pillar in the story of hard trance.

hard trance... not to be confused with hardstyle... i saw sum guy say that uberdruck is a hardstyle jock. nope he isnt really.. both as a DJ and a producer his sound is very direct energetic high octane hard trance, prolly some of the fiercest you can hear without venturing too close to other genres. although dirk nothroff [uberdruck] does incorporate the hardER sound of hard trance thru his rough and fierce kicks in most pf his track, he is very much still a hard trance producer... its all in the riff. listen to his breakdowns etc... theyre all trance induced. as i sed not to be confused with hardstyle...

hardstyle.... brainchild of nu-skool gabba.. harsh kicks and basslines, minimalisticness in the way of melody. to break it down id prolly say that hardstyle is a mixture of hard trance and techno.. all the growling drums and build ups from hard trance, with the simplicity and dependence on looping sounds to acheieve the desired effect.

hope this clears a few things up

I always thought, for example, "Mauro Picotto - Live at Gatecrasher NEC 13-04-02" was hard trance. Especially the first 20 minutes of it.

ive got that. i guess hard trance is nothing that can mainstream?? hmm, dunno..

I just recorded a cd which I consider hard trance and maybe just a touch of hardstyle. Here's the track listing so maybe you could tell me if you consider it all hard trance or not.

2. Exploration of Space - Cosmic Gate (DJ Shredda remix)
3. Shine - Zagros & Pacific (DJ Wag remix)
4. The Way - D-Vided (Original Mix)
5. God Music - Dumonde (Cosmic Gate remix)
6. Sky - Dito (Talla 2XLC remix)
7. F*ck Da Beatz - Stimulant DJ's (Original mix)
8. Blow Da Roof - Stimulant DJ's (Original mix)
9. Second Step - DJ Wag (Yakooza Remix)
10. French Kiss - Yakooza (DJ Wag Remix)
11. Future Shock - DJ Virus (LeBrisc Remix)
12. Space Odyssey - Klasic & sanders (Original Mix)

In my opinion, hard trance is a trance but with stronger and more powerful beat, and hard trance gives more energy than trance, its still has a melody synths and the stuff that trance has

thats my defintion dunno if its correct

Here's my definition:

Hard trance comes in two flavours, European and UK hard trance. European hard trance puts the emphasis on the "trance", while UK hard trance puts the emphasis on the "hard". European hard trance is like most epic or anthem trance, but the kick is harder and bassier, and the bassline is tougher. The BPM is higher and there tends to be harder sounds instead of uplifting sounds. UK hard trance is essentially hard house but with more melody, and more trancy synths instead of hard house synths.

Hardstyle is different to hard trance- I personally reckon it's closer to hardcore than anything. It has very harsh kicks and the snare drums tend to have a rough sound. There's also "bouncy" and saw effects in there, and the lead doesn't have much hook to it. There are a lot of cheesier hardcore elements as well- like daft vocals.

If that's anything to go by then I think UK > European

I've hated everything I've ever heard by Scot Project & Cosmic Gate, does absolutely sweet FA for me, whereas the trancier tunes I've heard from artists like BK & to a lesser extent Guyver really get me hyped up with energy.

I like hard as in fast & energetic, not hard as in heavy & tough, you could say.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jun-29-2004 12:41:

I agree, UK hard trance is better than European hard trance.
