Greece came out of nowhere to win it, it is amazing. Good job. However, even though they are the champs.. Greece doesn't play the best soccer in Europe.

exactly, might not be the best to watch soccer, but still, you go far with it!

Posted by RenderedDream on Jul-04-2004 23:19:

well done!
it's a bit strange how a defensive team with 8 men defending and 2 attacking can win an european with such great attack teams can win the tournament
i doubt they would have had the same success if they played the same games that portugal did (england and holland) but they resisted to the best striker of the tournament and that means something
i'm glad greece won and not some big team with many cup's in their history

One of the few times where being lucky and then going full defense actually worked.

Greece does not deserve the cup.

Before the Greece goal, how many chances did Portugal create? None. In an hour all they muster up was a couple of half chances while Greece had wasted the best chance of the game. So if anyone deserved to be ahead after an hour, it was Greece for their better attacking football.

After the goal Portugal created more because they had no choice, they were 30 minutes from defeat. I don't really accept this notion that Portugal are an attacking team and Greece a defensive one. Portugal keep a lot of possession, they use wide men and play with only one striker. With them, 4-3-3 very quickly becomes 4-5-1. Playing that kind of formation means plenty of men in midfield and a greater likelihood of possession but at the expense of genuine goalscoring opportunities because you rarely have more than one man in the penalty box. A team that plays like this is not a very attacking team in my mind, they're a cautious team who feel the need to be in possession in midfield by putting an extra man there who could otherwise be a striker. There was a time when 4-3-3 was seen as an attacking formation played with 3 strikers, but Portugal's formation involves Maniche and Constinha, and while Maniche got forward and got a couple of goals in this tournament he did a lot of defensive work, as did Costinha. By packing the midfield in this way you will get a lot of possession in the opposition half but you only have one striker to convert those 'chances', and I don't call whipping the ball into the penalty area a 'chance' if there is noone there to convert it. Just look the number of shots Portugal have from outside the box.

Up until their goal, when Greece found themselves with the ball in the Portuguese half they had a more positive attitude, they weren't afriad to get more than one man in the penalty area even if it meant they were more susceptible to the counter attack.

Greece are very well organised defensively, but they do get men forward and do look for chances, they don't wait until the 89th minute as some people have suggested. The Portuguese are a possession team (they had 60% of possession yesterday) but they are more comfortable playing on the counter-attack. We saw this against Spain, when Portugal had to score they loooked incapable for an hour, but when they got their goal and Spain had to come forward and score, the Portuguese were much happier defending and hitting them on the break, and began to play a lot better. Let's not forget the first game of the tournament, where Greece shocked everyone by scoring after 7 minutes, and then got a second. Just because you have a well organised defence and team strategy that doesn't make you a defensive boring team.

I think Greece had a tougher path than Portugal. They played Portugal, Spain, Russia, France, Czech, Portugal and conceded only 4 goals (2 of which against Russia).

So they played the hosts twice, the defending champions, and the hottest team of the tournament, beating them all and conceding one goal.

That alone deserves the cup.

portugal playing like they did, they deserve the cup
i don't know what happened to the portuguese players..bunch of gay diving players..portugal did a lot better than greece before the final
greece played a lot better in the final than portugal and was an outstanding surprise
i think either portugal or greece deserved the cup and usually the best win =)

I disagree. Portugal didn't really outclass anyone in this tournament. They deserved to beat Holland, and deserved to beat Russia although the referee played an important part. The other four games Portugal lacked creativity and were lucky to make the final, I'd say 3 of their 6 games were poor performances. Greece only had one bad game out of six.

Well I'm sorry but in MY eyes having a solid defense and an incredible amount of luck does not make them worthy of being european champions. Portugal deserved the cup, they had heart, while greeks were only defending. Portugal was the stronger team and the greeks knew it.

But I guess you don't care about that, all that matters to you is that one lucky corner kick goal.

What a tool.
