Volume is definately also a good night, but it isn't purely trance, it doesnt become trance till late in the night.

Strangis would have to be the best Trance DJ @ Volume, and he's also part of the 5am crew. But hey.

Each to there own

Posted by RaVVaR on Aug-19-2004 04:20:

Steve and Chris are by far ruling melbourne !!
Steve more history then any other person on TA.AU and when he gets on the decks people feel so good coz of his confidence

Would I be the best DJ on TA if I played exactly the same tunes as Tiesto?

Posted by Aesthetic on Aug-19-2004 23:48:

IMO you'd be the worst, but thats cause im one of the few who thinks tiesto's new stuff is junk.

ummmmm .. no not really, i think it takes a bit more than that. To play tracks that armin tiesto or signum play or any other great DJ doesnt mean your trying to copy their style or anything, as long as u can relate to the track or style your playing and steve relates to that alright ..
oh and correct me if im wrong dude but has Steve made GK 'mainstage' again ?? im not sure ...
he must be doing something right!!

End of the day, your playing for the crowd, not only for yourself! So if the crowd is rocking and people are leaving with smiles stretching from ear to ear, he must be doing something right

At the end of the day (imo) you are playing for yourself. Personally if i played somewhere and just copied what tiesto was playing I might as well burn a tiesto set and just pretend to play. People would still enjoy it as much no?

I play for myself and if people like what I play, excellent. If people dont then, unlucky i guess. That said though its not like im going to go play banging trance for the chin stroking elite, or vice versa, but i will always play what I like.

Personally I dont like the 'techy' (tacky?) direction trance is heading in so I dont play those tunes. There are still plenty of decent songs out there though. Just because I've not seen them play listed by armin, tiesto (or sasha and digweed if we were talking about progressive) doesnt mean im not going to play them. In fact i would be more likely to play them because it would be something new, rather than the cookie cutter sets I see a lot of. Every set at the moment (around here at least) seems to have dream machine in, seems to have BIG TUNE X in, and itll be the same in a few months, except BIG TUNE X will have been replaced by BIG TUNE Y.

Posted by Euphoric_Madman on Aug-20-2004 02:12:

U talk about playing tunes you like, which is what they also do, the tunes they like may include BIG TUNE X or BIG TUNE Y, but they're not playing it because tiesto or armin etc.. are playing it, they're playing it because they love the sound or the feel of the track, and having the talent they do, they're able to throw it in at the right time to make the crowd go OFF!

Posted by Ghostface on Aug-20-2004 02:21:

There are always going to be some tracks which everyone plays, white room, ATRC last year, simply because they are massive tracks. Sure Armin, Tiesto etc brought them to prominence and to our attention by flogging the promos but if it's a brilliant track then ppl would have started playing it anyway.

The problem comes when DJs look at an armin or tiesto playlist and think that if they go ouy and buy all those records and play them they will be equally as good, which obviously isn't the case. That takes no skill whatsoever. Anyone can learn to beatmatch and play armin's setlist, what will bring you success is having your own distinctive style.

I agree with Escee, that you play for yourself. If you didn't surely we'd all have record bags full of britney and hip hop. Like anything you need to strike a balance. There's nothing wrong with chucking a vocal in here and there if you know that's what the crowd wants.

Sure, I like big tunes too, but if I play a set I dont play big tune after big tune. The problem stems from people playing JUST what is big at the moment and not looking forward (or indeed back in some cases) for what is good, but hasnt been caned to death yet by every man and his dog.

People are allowed to like what they like, and play what they like. there is nothing wrong with that. But if a tracklist is just the same as tiesto, armin, or corsten bar a few songs (or combination or these or other djs), then I think they should probably look at themselves and ask if they playing what they like or just what will get a big reaction because everyone knows it.

(Cue vicious cycle of people arguing they play what they like even if it is a compilation of the last 10 state of trances or the most recent tiesto set)

lol ..this would be bedroom dj's most likely .. something i would do ( but i dont know how to mix for shit ) haha.. which wouldn't be the case for ANY dj on TA.AU

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Aug-20-2004 02:45:

ok, am not a DJ yet (still languishing in the bedroom, haha!) but ive always thought if people are enjoying whatever you play, then it shouldn't matter. I know if I went out and heard an awesome set by some local, and then found that exact tracklist online that one of the big jocks did recently, well, i wouldn't care coz i had an excellent night at the time.

if we all love trance so very much, obviously our tastes are going to coincide quite a bit, and people playing the same tunes as someone else is inevitable. while its different if you hear the same track several times in a night, i dont mind hearing that track (assuming i like it) over several nights.

buying vinyl is expensive, so in my experience youre only ever gonna go out and buy stuff to play live that you already like, and i make no apologies for being a "big-tune" slut!
