-- Palestine a nation to the world except for Israel?

To be honest I didn't see Palestine there, I must have missed it. I think its good that they are there but find it a bit odd still since are they really a country in terms of what we normally define a country as at the moment? Are they a member of the U.N? I thought declaring Palestine as a country was in the process and would take a few years to complete.

As i said earlier in this thraed, weather or not you are as "country" in the olympic has nothing to do with what countries has declared it as one, but with if it has a olympic committee or not... so, palestine and hongkong has one each, although they are not really a country. lots of small islands has one too.

Posted by BadBadNeil on Aug-15-2004 01:46:

I'm gonna buy my own island then and start an olympic team. I'm gonna call it Neilopia

Exactly, just like the Koreas have one team but are obviosly two very different and soveriegn nations.

But in this spirit of the Olympics I do believe it best that Texas has its own Olympic team. Evil IOC oppressing the poor Texan nation

The construction of the security barrier, in conjunction with Sharon's plan to withdraw from Gaza, has provoked near panic by Arafat. There is fear on the other side of the border that Sharon will impose what is, essentially, a two-state solution. Palestinian leaders, including Yasser Arafat, have denounced the plan to "unilaterally" bestow the autonomy that they have long demanded, but repeatedly rejected.

In recent weeks, open warfare has broken out among and between Palestinian factions. Police station have been attacked and burned. Government buildings have been taken over, officials and commentators attacked and kidnapped -- all contributing to a larger, public disillusionment with the Palestinian leadership.

While Arab hardliners accuse Israelis of everything from using the blood of murdered Christian children in Passover matzah to plotting the removal of all non-Jews from both Israel and the Palestinian territories, Israel's Supreme Court has ordered portions of the barrier moved, at the cost of tens of millions of dollars, to lessen Palestinian hardships. The irony is that Sharon's strategy, to withdraw and cede to the Palestinians full control of their own country, may be the most ruthless thing Israelis are capable of doing to their sworn enemies.

Though critics among Sharon's own countrymen are angry that he would disengage from Gaza without reciprocal concessions, he clearly believes the benefits of such a move outweigh the costs and risks.

Some of those benefits fall into the category of public relations. With no Israeli presence to blame for the many Palestinian problems, including their dismal corruption-plagued economy, the current Palestinian leadership will find it more difficult to evade responsibility for conditions in their territories.
Arafat is in total panic over this. He needs a conflict with Israel to divert attention to his corruption and theft of billions in aid. How else is Arafat going to explain why he stole 5 billion from his people.

http://www.jcpa.org/brief/brief3-30.htm
Mohammad Dahlan in an interview with the Kuwaiti daily al-Watan (1 August 2004) said that Arafat is sitting on "the bodies of the Palestinians and on "their ruins." He also revealed that five billion dollars in financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority over the last number of years has vanished, and that he has no idea what happened to the money.

Posted by VanFleet on Aug-15-2004 21:30:

Dahlan doens't know what happened to the 5 billion.
Try looking in Arafat's Swiss Bank account.

The thing is that you're not acting like the peace activist you're claiming to be but just like a narrow minded idiot who hates all Israelis just for the reason of them being Israelis.

As long as Palestine, such as it is, is led by Yasser Arafat and the PLO, they should be banned from the Olympics. Has the world forgotten 1972? (Link: http://www.palestinefacts.org/pf_1967to1991_munich.php )

Rhetorical question, of course they have.

If the Palestinians were led by someone other than a man and his gang of thugs who murdered the Israeli olympic team, we could talk. But as long as the scumsucker is still alive, no Palestine at the olympics.

Its truly sickening. Kill Jews, and the world doesn't fucking care.

Posted by imokruok on Aug-16-2004 02:56:

So, you truly believe that something recognized by the Olympics is the way that it is or should be recognized by the rest of the world?

Not everyone agrees with China that Taiwan is a "rogue province." But yet, there it was. Taiwan was called Chinese Taipei at the insistence of the Chinese.

The reciprocal concessions is the large areas of land in the West Bank that Sharon is taking "in exchange" for Gaza. Of course the Pals have no say in that.

Not to mention Sharon will never let them have a real country with real borders, a real army, and real sovereignty. He would consider that to be too much of a threat to Israel.

Right... just like you'd hand over your tanks and planes to your 'friendly' neighbor so they can play 'real nation state' on your backdoor.

Enjoy the fireworks.

I think it was amazing that Palestine and Iraq and Afghanistan got standing Ovations.

Off topic:

What is the difference between Zionist Jews and Orthodox jews?

Religion wise. I take it Isreal/Palistine is not part of their religion just historically significant.

and no im not being anti jewish i love ze jews

Nobody's talking about "handing over" any weapons. What I mean is Sharon does not want Palestine to be a country if it is allowed to have a real army. The condition is that they would have to be "protected" by Israel.

(Not to mention that Palestine would never in a million years be able to afford an army more than 1/100th the size of the IDF)

I'm sorry... Why is it that you believe the Palestinians need an army?

u r complitely wrong - thats the point that if pals will get an country-status + army - we will stop to think twice before attackin them after they will try to suicide themselves for just 1 time...
i mean we will be able to attack as long as we need as an answer to their terror-acts if they will happen again of coz - and in that case they already will not be able to cry to their friends in Europe or arab countries coz israel and them will be in the equal position...

also now we r kinda responsibale for their future and think of leavin withh them in peace in contrast when if they'll become a country we will be able to "wipe" them just coz of one "stupid mistake" like terror acts or smth like that...and they will be no more excuses for their actions...

i dont think its true...

they still will be just-born country,
they will not have the israeli army power in click of a finger,
and if they will have an army power close to that of Israel's, don't you think they will kill much much more israelis? its not like they are monkeys or something that cant use tanks/air-planes. look what happened in 1973 Kipur war, that wasn't funny at all

i believe people said the same before they had a goverment,
and before they were given weapons and security forces
and also before they had anti-tank missles
and also before they had the Kasam Rocket...
but they are still an underdog, and israel cant attack with more than 1% of its full force.

and do you think that if they get an army, then they will stop using the palestinain civillians as human shields? israel still would have no right to carpet-bomb gaza like Russia did in Chechnia...

and i must agree with Yoepus, after they will get independence, they wont need and army for protection and dont deserve one. Israel *surprise surprise* is not an agressor that occupies countries for fun.
and please dont go and say that israel also didnt deserve one, because israel was attacked by almost all sorrounding arab states in the day of its Independence.
