well the simple fact is this, parks are pretty empty even on weekends. It's sad.

The fact that these laws exist are stupid and im sure that they do get enforced, especially in oakville. If you saw how many by-law enforcement cars drive around here daily you'd shake your head.

Posted by MarkT on Aug-16-2004 18:37:

a lot of that stuff isn't enforced and is there for liability purposes for the city.

No beer = no broken glass...no playing in non-designated areas = no kid cutting his foot on that piece of broken glass and his parents trying to sue the city for not maintaining a safe park.

see the logic? In our sue-happy society, where few seem willing to take responsibility for their own actions (and the resulting consequences) or actually PARENT and SUPERVISE their children, why are these types of laws such a surprise?

is the only other alternative is to have everyone sign a waiver every time the use public facilities? lol.

you leave out a lot too. The age restriction, for eg...it says that "any such restrictions shall be posted in the area of the park facities by sign". You make it sound like there are enforcement officers walking around with omnipotent power to ban people at a whim...

who is telling kids they can't play there??? Permits are required because we don't have unlimited park space here...having organized sports leagues means we need some type of permit system, otherwise you have two teams with 30 people showing up who can't play because two little kids got there first? How would a league function?

btw...you'll notice how much cheaper our public facilities are in Canada vs. some other places. Our user fees are WAY lower than some other places. My cousins lived in D.C. for a couple of years and my aunt and uncle were surprised to find out how much it cost for their kids to play baseball in a rec league or to swim at "public" pools for the summer

I think we have it pretty good here (although beers in the park doesn't seem like a horrific idea...but some losers here would ruin it for everyone, I'm sure). I'm not sure which of those rules you find particularly "restrictive"???

Also, did you read where it says the city can actually tell you how old you may be, how big you may be and how many people can participate?

Didnt see that part.

Regardless why dont you spend your time bitching to city council members, instead of a trance forum?

I use to play for the City of Burlington for soccer, and played with the city of Oakville team aswell, there is no way this shit is enforced. If we didnt have a place to practice, particularly in the early season, we just make two small nets and away we go. And the by-laws guys all hide in the park parking lots to smoke and take breaks/sleep whatever they may do. We never we told to get outta there.

well thats a relief. Ive only lived here for a month. Its nice to know that the laws themselves may be nazi but at least there isnt a gestapo enforcing them.... yet.

That was truely the saddest thing I've read all day.

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-17-2004 04:43:

yes its sad that these laws exist.

Posted by MarkT on Aug-17-2004 05:08:

perhaps...

but maybe Rodrico was too polite

it's more sad to me that you seem to sit there all day and dredge up negativity...and, in this case, while knowing virtually nothing about what you were talking about...being outraged at bylaws that you didn't know were not enforced...possibly because you haven't even bothered to attempt experiencing these "freedoms" and having them restricted to you instead of just freaking out

"nazi laws" and "gestapo" analogies in reference to unenforced Town of Oakville bylaws and enforcement officials, lol...I love it!!!

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-17-2004 05:12:

well i happened to trip over these laws when i was looking up the laws about all the signs i cant put up (which is very much enforced)...

these laws are dumb and there is no denying it.

Posted by raaven on Aug-17-2004 05:36:

laws in oakville are fuct sometimes.

they have a lot of screwy laws because of their rich residents... damn them. damn them to hell. and i hate their parking by-laws aswell. bastards

Posted by DJ Ski on Aug-17-2004 14:13:

You're not allowed in the park between dusk and 6:00 am. LOL! Good thing my grandpa doesn't live in Oakville because he likes to go for a walk at sunrise in the summer. I think its time our society scrapped the safety first policy and realized that each person should be responsible for themselves. Getting hit by the odd stray soccer ball is more than worth it for some basic freedoms. Tolerance people!

its like this over here too. Its enforced when they see some punks fucking around the parks.

I don't think you're old grandpa would be bothered.

Ive had this feeling for awhile now.

Posted by MarkT on Aug-17-2004 18:08:

I'm starting to realize that you guys need to just chill out, go about your business, and realize that half of what you complain about is completely irrelevant

there are countless stupid (and often unenforced) laws on the books in towns, cities, and provinces across the country...not to mention all over the world. Why the sudden interest

When people get worked up about this kind of shit, I wonder why they don't do something more productive with their time, if they are soooo socially conscious. Go advocate for some marginalized group or something...maybe volunteer somewhere. It will make far more of a difference that the constant bitching in here

Hahahaha, I love these little "factoids" that go around. If someone isn't telling me that a duck's quack doesn't echo, they're listing "crazy" laws from all places of the world.

Newsflash, people: most if not all of these laws either never existed or haven't been in the books for centuries. Snopes even did a piece on some myths from Arizona, although what they say is equally true of many other places like Toronto and New York.

Sorry to rail on you Andrea but I've gotta use you as an example: whenever you get a mass e-mail or a link to a web site with a huge collection of totally disconnected "factoids" or "looney laws" or other things that would sound downright goofy if they were actually true - you can rest assured that the vast majority of them, or possibly all of them, are false. If they were real, don't you think that the collection would include the relevent Acts and Sections? And yet they almost NEVER do.

Having said that, banning sports from a public park isn't a "looney law", it's just a very annoying one. As is often the case with laws, there are sometimes well-meaning but archaic laws that made sense at the time but don't anymore. Trouble is that nobody in the government cares enough to clean out the books when the laws have become pointless.

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-18-2004 04:24:

Actually many of those silly laws andrea posted are in fact enforced and relevant to today's society such as the encripted tv one, and the yellow margerine one, and the snow removal one.

Well of course you picked out two relevant ones out of the bunch (not sure about that yellow margarine one...). I didn't say all of them were crap, it wouldn't surprise me if the craps law really exists too (gambling isn't permitted in a lot of places!). Although technically, the satellite "law" is not a law but a regulation put down by the CRTC when they were pressured by Bell to make their ExpressVu an "exclusive" product in Canada. Snow removal laws are about liability.

There are some normal-looking laws in there but I'd be willing to bet they they are actually regulations by private institutions and not government laws.

But I think you'd be hard-pressed to find where in the books it's illegal to water your lawn while it's raining or where it says you have to give ex-convicts a horse and a handgun. It's a common tactic, Jay - intersperse the bullshit with a few facts that people know are true, and it makes the entire set of them look a bit more credible.

But hey, if you think I'm shitting you, go ahead and find the acts and sections where these are instituted. I will be happy to admit how wrong I am if you can find sources for more than 1/3 of those.

Posted by malek on Aug-18-2004 04:47:

agh...

yellow margarine is not permitted for one simple reason. Butter is naturally yellow and that law was put in place to safeguard farmer's market share against the industrialy produced margarine.

A product with the same color and taste as butter would be considered as butter, even tho its not. blablabla

stupid debate, but one must understand its context, because such laws don't appear from out of nowhere.

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-18-2004 13:18:

yeah because people cant read the difference between margerine and butter on the label

paternalistic governments
