I was serious. Unless he goes to the gym the only way he's going to gain weight is from fat. Basketball and biking don't build enough muscle to make much of a difference at all weightwise if you're trying to gain. And this guy already said he stopped going to the gym.

I'd advise the following:

Eat a lot of meat, fat, and sugar
Go to the gym regularly (say 3 times a week)
Sleep a lot

Basically, lifting heavy weights tells your muscles that they should grow, eating fat and meat gives them the substances needed for growth, while the proces of growth is at its best during sleep.

im 18 yrs old, 5'5 105lbs and im male. I know im really thin (and short) but i don't really care. I eat plenty throughout the day and the doctor says im healthy. that's what matters to me...i'm sure i'll put on the weight when I don't want it.

to gain it's a combination of diet and weight lifting.

damn and i thought i had it bad. some of you guys need to gain some weight. i eat all the time as well, and workout once or twice a week. i just get stronger but no actual muscle/weight gain. i wanna gain like 10 pounds and i'd be a happy camper.

Ahh. So I suppose with this being true, until weight lifting was invented - people didn't gain muscle?

There are all sorts of ways to gain muscle without ever going into the weightroom.

It's all about integrating exercise you enjoy and do regularly into your life permenantly.

by playing basketball and biking he's burning calories which = weight loss. weight lifting is the best way to put on muscle. until weight lifting was invented i'm sure there weren't a bunch of huge muscled guys walking around like there are today. but really people have been lifting heavy objects are 1000's of years

I don't really care about getting ripped...I just want a little more mass. I have very little fat on me as is...just a wiry guy with small muscles.

All I'm saying is you don't have to go to the weight room to gain mass. I agree its the fastest way, but some people (like me) really hate lifting weights a lot. It's bad for you and it keeps me from doing the things I love usually.

I gained almost 30 pounds (mostly muscle) just rockclimbing and hiking over 2 years. The only reason I lift now is just to have "beach muscles" (look good at the beach) - that's it.

Just go to college

Freshman 15 ahoy.

I thought I never could gain any weight either, I am 6'8" and I weighed about 180. I had some fat in my legs, but it was mostly muscles, and my upperbody was all nothing, you could see my ribs. Now I'm about a solid 210 after a year of college

Hehe Orb. I thought of you when I wrote that.

Lifting is bad for me cause you can get hurt doing it (as in pull a muscle, etc) - I also dislike going to the gym because of the people. It just doesn't feel natural to me (I do it anyway when I have to, like now)

I'd much rather get mass just doing the stuff I love - playing basketball, hiking, rock-climbing, mountaineering, etc. Maybe some people can't do it that way, but I did. I just like to be outside and doing stuff instead of grinding away at a gym with other 9 to 5ers that seem to be only there because their doctor said they'd die if they didn't go.

I used to have this problem but sitting in front of the computer all these years has finally payed off.

Posted by Orbax on Aug-17-2004 02:35:

yeah, for the most part I feel the same. I mean, ive been rock climbing for 10 years now, and I basically do everything there is to do outside hehe.

Ive found that my working out has made me better at all those things though. So when Im like, alright, Ill work out legs hard monday, I cant go hiking for three days, but after that Ill go do Si...

I do get put out of commission for about half of the week because of weights, but like I said, Ive been able to do everything harder and longer because of the weight supplement.

I just think its impossible to get the look of the body down right by doing stuff. your average gym goer considers that to be an activity, and I definitely dont agree with that. Id rather be on top of a mountain any day, but putting on a shirt that fits everywhere is awesome

No real point to that story, actually. Just kind of saying I agree mostly. the key is doing *everything* and in moderation

Posted by keddo on Aug-17-2004 02:35:

do 3x30 pushups everyday, when you arent visiting the gym regulary. And EAT as mutch as you can, i mean, everytime you feel slighty hungry, go grab tons of food and just shove it down. It worked for me

Posted by Orbax on Aug-17-2004 02:37:

More people need to tell him to eat food

Posted by DigitalMP on Aug-17-2004 04:27:

it's not so much the AMOUNT you eat, but moreso WHAT you eat.

What gives?

Eh....sounds like me. I'm 6 feet even, 138 pounds. I must take in about 3.5-4k calories per day, and I weight lift every day, plus swim a mile or more. Oh and I take protein supplements.

I gained half a pound in three weeks.

my metabolism is extremely fast, i eat WHATEVER....argh not being able to gain weight sucks, im 5'9 135 lbs

Posted by D-res on Aug-17-2004 07:20:

Im 6'4" and about 180lbs, but im not fat. in fact im quite skinny. i wonder where the weight is. i have a very fast metabolism. i eat so unhealthy, fatty food, but never gain weight. if you wanna gain weight and your metabolism is too high to allow you to do so by eating, all i can say is work out. go to the gym atleast 4x a week and do some strength training. that or spend 400 bucks on a moderate home gym. ex: i have a Total Gym, and its helped me gain muscle and weight. i dont use it enough to gain much muscle, but i can garauntee that it helped me gain some weight. just dont gain the wrong kinda weight. you dont wanna be fat. atleast, no one in their right mind would want to be. oh yeah, and buy that protein mix at GNC or soemthing. it will help you gain muscle faster. just remember that muscle weighs more than fat...

Never, ever, buy anything at GNC. If you need protein, go to Protein Factory or All The Whey.

Ive been playing water-polo for like 6 years from 1995-2001, am 20 yrs old now; since 2002 I havent really done any sports like playing in a team or something, played soccer about 1-2x/week or riding my bike for about 10-15km once per week.
when I was playing waterpolo everything was fine, but since 2003 I kinda gain too much weight, not extremely much, but I gained about 20 pounds in 1.5 yrs; that's why I wanna become more active now and build up some muscles, basically just being 'fit'

any advice on how to build up some muscels without really gaining extra weight?

Posted by joshyd on Aug-17-2004 11:47:

maybe next year ill start goin to the gym, cuz im a weak prick too
