Sandstorm was never "cheese". It has always been a pretty good song. It just got popular and overplayed.
Go listen to Paul van Dyk's Mayday 2000 set and see how it feels.

Simplistic, everything's based on the one huge riff (even the other synths are just variations of the lead), no depth.

Fills out all the qualifications of cheese all right.
