Just shrug and laugh. If they wanna know more (and after that response they usually do) then I'll talk to them. Better to get someone who wants to listen to what you have to say, than to tell someone what you think when they aren't really listening.

Posted by Psy-T on Aug-24-2004 17:58:

i get annoyed when someone bashes a genre (doesnt have to be my fav),
especially if their into 1 type of edm and trashing another type.
just because i expect more understanding from edm lovers

Never heard anybody bash my favorite artist.

The following artists are horrible at what they do. Plus they are man-whores.

J00f, Zabiela, Ronski, Pvd, Sasha.

I try to really understand the other persons point of view. I try to understand how they think ,their musical taste, their personality, thier preferences, their motivatation, etc. I than gather my facts a draw some conclusions. Sometimes they might be right. But sometime they might be wrong. I really try enguage into a debate over a disagreement than try to flame over it.

For those who have nothing intellgent to say, don't try to enguage in the debate, and just say one-line responses like "he sucks" etc. I view as children with very limited education. They do not deserve to be one such forums like tranceaddicts nor belong in the group of "intellegencia".

Don't care.

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-24-2004 18:41:

Funny how my name was mentioned only once in 3 pages, surprising because I know most were thinking of me when they wrote this. I tend to say my opinion, be it good or bad of any artists at some points. I enjoy adding my usually different and non regular opinions into the fray, this is after all music discussion. I have crossed the line at times with the rants towards some artists but some can do much better but I do apologize for that.

I've given up caring unless the person has no valid point, then I'll jump in.

Posted by Torley Wong on Aug-24-2004 18:50:

I try not to take things too seriously... but sometimes I do... I do not like flames and bashing of an artist without some well-reasoned thought and consideration for opposing opinions. And I prefer criticism of musical merit INSTEAD of personally attacking an artist's character or self-worth. I dislike starting up false drama or wars between fans of artists.

For example, a statement like this:

bt is a flaming fag homo with wussy hair he makes music that sucks!

I really can't validate that at ALL. It's mean-spirited, and quite frankly, I don't like the queerbashing attitude. AND it's a run-on sentence. But this:

I don't enjoy BT's music, because I find there are too many technical tricks and edits in it for me. That gives me a headache.

I understand this more, and while I can't agree, I can at least respect this opinion and the person making it. If you try to engage in a serious discussion with someone, and they continue to give you dumb messages back, well -- move on! Like davepiazza said:

Well said!

Over time, no doubt, people on here make their character at least somewhat apparent by the content of their posts.

That looks like a typical InfiniteSquare post.

As long as they are just saying it's a thing of preference I don't really mind but if someone totally shits on a talented artist and doesn't even have respect for them that's when I get pissed off. If don't like someone it's either because they actually have absolutely no talent or it's just my personal preference but I won't flame them, I'll just say I don't like them.

Sorry to disappoint you, but contrary to your popular belief everyone is not thinking about you or focused on what you say, or even really cares.

I think before an someone says an artist "sucks" they should ask themselves, "have I produced anything better?" And even if you have, it's only better in your opinion. The quality of music is all opinion based, since all music is a specific arrangement of certain sounds that affects each person differently. Stating that an artist sucks is an attempt at stating a fact, not giving an opinion, and that annoys me.

Haha... so true.

You know what ticks me off too? Someone who only listens to one, or even a handful of songs by an artist, especially one who's been around awhile and has gone through several "periods" or "phases" -- and then dismisses them entirely, saying "I HATE SO-AND-SO, EVERYTHING THEY DO SUCKS!!". That's downright myopic.

I'm guilty of this myself, historically.

im a rock fan. well a metalhead and i play the guitar but i still like trance.

i even cover trance songs. so i think u need to rethink what u said.

Depends on the nature of the criticism. If someone if insulting something with a really stupid argument, then I bite their fucking head off. If they're like Ishkur, and are slating something for a reason that makes sense to them, then I'm not bothered.

Actually, it should be the other way around. The ignoramuses, who know little about your favourite artist and even less about electronic music, who defend their position by saying "techno sucks"....those are the people you shouldn't be bothered with. Because they are idiots, and aren't worthy of talking to.

It's the people who can back up what they say with an airtight, indefensible argument whom you should be worried about. Because their reasoning is sound and their comments are justified, it makes what they have to say virtually unignorable. You can't just dismiss them as retarded dissidents who've been grossly misinformed. You have to deal with them. And stand up for your tastes under dire scrutiny.

But it's their opinion, and if it's reasonable, there's no point arguing with it. I won't argue just because their tastes don't coincide with mine. You may have a point about trance having massive breakdowns. To you that's bad, but to me it could be a good thing. Nobody is right or wrong.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't realise it was you initially. Edited now.

Indeed! This should be a life-affirming mantra!

For now on, no one is allowed to criticize a movie unless they themselves are a filmmaker. No one is allowed to yell at the referees unless they've played the sport at that level. And you can't vote unless your a politician.

Yes, let's rid ourselves of our personal opinions of entertainers. They don't belong to us anyway.
