| Originally posted by occrider I'm afraid I don't understand your point. The claim by the announcers was that there were Greek conspiracy theories that the Americans were responsible for the drug scandal which perpetrated some of the booing being specifically directed at the Americans. The Greek (TA user, not the people) claimed that the announcers were misleading the public because there were no accounts from the Greek media of such charges, and that we should have researched the issue rather than listening to the announcers. I had researched the issue and posted my sources. Is that sufficient elaboration? I don't understand your second question as to how many people read a newspaper. If you are implying that not many greeks read the NY times, the london Times, or the IHT such that they would adopt the conspiracy theories that these papers are claiming than you would be correct. However, each of these sources is documenting what is being spoken in the Greek media and where many greeks are perhaps getting these ideas. I would cite Greek sources personally however, I don't speak greek. |
I should have made this clearer and I apologize. I meant that the announcers said that the Greek newspapers, not newspapers from here in the U.S. or other countries were supporting this crazy american conspiracy. The "tell us the truth" local headline was in reference to why Kenteris and Thanou missed the drug test, and why they were in the hospital for so long and why their coach was constantly dodging questions from the greek media about what "really" happened. And im glad that they found that wonderful quotation by a greek saying that "we dont like americans." That is so cliche that they used something like that to represent a whole country's opinion about another country. I supopose other countries can then use Pat Buchanan as an overall representation of the American sentiment.
You must also remember, going back to the original topic about general booing and whistling at the Olympics, that here we see NBC's version. They'll show us almost every event that the U.S. is in. And, why shouldn't they? This is in fact the United States. So, logically, they will show Americans competing. So, just because there was all that noise when they played, does not mean it was only toward Americans. There's people from all kinds of countries in the stands supporting their athletes. And if they do go up against us, they love to see us lose because we usually win quite a chunk of the medals. Besides, the U.S.A received a hell of an ovation when they marched out in the opening ceremony, or thats what my cousin told me over the phone. So people do not love to hate Americans. They love to hate the government.
P.s. - I love how they mention that the U.S. government supported a military dictatrship in Greece. quite the irony when we pride ourselves in spreading democracy. I still love this country though.
