How do you know how they decide it's crap? Many elitists used to love trance before discovering prog or whatever, and now dislike it. You really don't have anything to back this up with.

Posted by Torley Wong on Aug-28-2004 18:25:

I can only speak for myself, and I'm not qualified to judge a whole genre or even a subsubstyle on its merits until I have listened to every single piece of music ever written under that banner, whether that be deliberately or incidentally (i.e in hindsight it was retro-categorized).

I treasure those moments when I think I'll hate everything in the coal mine and then I find one diamond that makes the search all worthwhile.

And even then, it all continues to expand...

That thing called a brain.

Do they NOT listen to trance or what?

Probably more than you do.

I always wondered why the people over at discogs were always saying that Epic Trance is for kiddies who have no taste. Then I realized that most of them are over 30 years old and have been listening to EDM for at least 15 years.

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-28-2004 18:40:

everyone is elitist in some way cuz we don't listen to certain genres or certain artists.

You're annoying me more than the thread starter here. I would make my own decisions about my tastes instead of following others, if I were you.

What in the fuck? We've got another Dr. Phil here.

We all learn things by garnering information from those who know more about a subject than we do, or by "following others" as you put it, but I didn't follow anyone. My taste changed on it's own. I am figuring out why it did so on my own though, by looking at informed sources. What do you want me to do, look deeply into my soul or go on a spirit journey after smoking a peace-pipe? Come join me in a place called reality my friend. It's fun here.

And all that aside, what I was really trying to convey was that it just gave me a different perspective outside of my own. Simmer down hot shot.

Please, someone else tell me what i'm thinking or assess the state of my mental health after reading a paragraph that I wrote on an internet message forum. It's not ridiculous.

EDIT: Let's look at something else shall we? You people are of the general consensus that Trance music is underground and not pop. You also agree that I just follow others, at least in my musical tastes. If those statements were both true I wouldn't be here. I'd be on the britneyspears.com forums or some such. Think about that.

I can't be bothered to argue with your elitist crap. There's obviously no changing your outlook on music, so I won't even bother.

Don't bother, you probably shouldn't.

You have no idea what my outlook on music is. And in fact, without saying that you are, there's a good chance that you may be the elitist. How can I be an elitist when I only dislike one subgenre of a much larger and more varied music genre? I don't understand that part.

I mean I thought elitists just listen to one genre of music and claim it to be the best over all others. Am I not correct?

No, not at all.

So what is an elitist then?

Someone who's music tastes are based on what they think they "should" listen to, to appear either alternative, or knowledgeable, or just generally musically elite.

If you want to call me musically elite, knowledgeable, or alternative because I listen to many genres of EDM and non-EDM, you're welcome to do so.

I'm done arguing though. You can have the last word if you want.

you guys are just obviously racists because you disagree with mndeg...

That's just stupid.

they've listened to EDM for 30 years, and stopped listening to trance Or never took the time with it
and THEN they bash it

thats just ignorant
you should always listen to something before bashing it
its like listening to 10 seconds of a trance intro and saying trance sucks because its all the same

the thing is, if you can't name a song of the genre you hate, you have no reason to hate it

There again, you are shooting yourself in the foot. Look at all the progressive house vs. trance threads and you'll see what I mean. People love to bash progressive house for being too boring and/or too slow, and to them, it does suck. Actually, I think progressive gets just as much bashing as trance does.

there are no prog house bashing threads, and if there are they are done by non custom TA's
they are just confused

ok I figured it out, elitists bash other genres because they don't know any better
cheese excluded

i'm sure that there are a lot of non-custom TAs that aren't brand new to the scene

Once they realize that every Epic trance track is the same formulaic breakdown/buildup/anthem theme, there's really no use in listening to any more of it. That's not ignorant, that's common sense. I'm sure they can name quite a lot of tracks from the genre they hate.

I have an idea. Name me one Country song right now without searching on any search engine or anywhere else. Right off the top of your head. If it takes you more than 5 seconds to think of one you're a hypocrite.

Do you think the music you listen to is not formulaic? Music, perhaps by definition, is formulaic. So, do you think that formulaic is an undesirable attribute? Music from the classical period (and similar periods) is perhaps the most formulaic of anything yet created; do you consider it worthless based on this fact alone? Unfortunately, your outlook is severely prejudiced, and more unfortunately, you are one of many who suffer like this.

Nah, for me it's the breakdowns/buildups/anthems themselves as much as the way they are arranged. And that in itself wouldn't be so bad if it hadn't ruined a genre of music that was fine already.

Posted by ams2003 on Aug-29-2004 00:20:

Something I really hate is people who feel bigger than you for listening to a certain genre or just go with the flow to think their 'cool'

I don't care what people think about my musical taste.
Yeah, I started out listening to so called 'cheese' then discovered real trance.. well artists like Above & Beyond, Chicane, Blank & Jones, Signum, Thrillseekers, etc.. some people might say its still cheese but so what..

Actually I don't post here very often, one of the reasons is because of the amount of flame wars that appear, and I've been feeling quite depressed lately. Music is one thing that will always be there to put a smile back on my face and just for a brief moment put all my worries behind me
