Start:
Rock/Alternative (RATM was the first CD I ever bought... still have it for a little nostalgia)
Rap
Chicago House (Bad Boy Bill's Bangin the Box 3 was the first EDM CD I ever bought)
Random mislabelled Napster music
Random downloaded Tiesto CD (Magik VI)
Trance Only

Now:
Everything except gabber... Christ that stuff annoys me.

rap music-> grunge->rap music-> trance-> prog-> increasingly more rap

Posted by ToF on Sep-02-2004 13:44:

from about 10-12 years old: anything on the radio (but i noticed interest in synthpop (check out ishkurs guide lol) )

then pop

some soft rock eg. linkin park

cheesy edm played on the radio (at that time all i knew was it "techno" and only listened to it to be cool )

r&b/hip hop and rap (again probably to be cool)

more cheesey trance eg. mos

then i discovered what REAL TRANCE was and i fell in love (been 2 years since then )

right now im starting to like progressive trance and tech-trance
but i mainly like melodic/uplifting trance

so yer i had some edm in me since i was born (from the synthpop), i just never discovered my passion for it until recently

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-02-2004 13:52:

Hmm... Roughly goes:

Passive interest in mainstream dance
Strong interest in mainstream dance
Euphoria comp leading to trance
Hard trance
Prodigy
Electronica
All forms of EDM
Starting to get into rock a lot more now.

But I haven't stopped liking any of it- I could easily listen to every CD I've bought and still like them all.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Sep-02-2004 14:40:

Start
-Whatever my dad listened to (Elvis, Beatles, Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre etc.)
-Brit pop (Oasis, Blur)
-Harder rock, punk (Green Day, Nirvana, Offspring)
-The Prodigy (the point of no return)
-Breaks, Big Beat (Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, early Junkie XL, Crystal Method)
-Trance
End

Note: I actually haven't stopped listening to any of the stuff I used to when I found something new. And of course there have been a lot more stuff than what I listed but I only listed the "defining moments", so to speak.

- Trance... for 6 months or so
- Progressive trance
- Carl Cox-style techno

Read This!

1978- Heard pop's James Brown records and liked em. Was fascinated by Sugar Hill Gang's "Rappers Delight"

1982- Entered the breakdance scene and became a B-boy.

1983- Discovered reggae here and there.

1984- Discovered the difference between rapper and popper.

1985- Left breakdance scene.

1986- Listened to rap on radio when it came on.

1987- Started recording Nintendo music, love of "electronica" was born forever.

1988- Got 1st turntable and the vinyl "Rap The Beat" for 12th birthday. Love of rap solidified for many years. Wrote first rap called "RC Pro Am rap".

1992- Got deeply into reggae, namely dancehall. Recorded everything I heard on radio shows. Got first mixer and began mixing everything. Began buying at least $150 of rap vinyl each year.

1994- Heard a remix of Two Tribes by FrankieGTH. Liked "trance" but couldn't find much. Still recorded video gamed music, along with listening to anime soundtracks.

1996- Formed group with longtime friends Hammiz & Ice called "Da Box Bustiz" and wrote 95+ tracks of rap, rock/metal, reggae/junglist/dub between then and the fall of 2001.

1997- Left "hip hop scene" as I saw it was becoming a commercialized/mainstream piece of shit joke of a genre it is today. Still recorded and wrote raps though.

1999- Heard new electronia in line for Star Wars tickets. Reasearched more. Found "trance" in summer of 1999. Downloaded anything and everything on Napster. Trance is what I listen to 95% of the time up till now.

BEGINNING (when I first got into music, age 10 or so)

- Most pop music (spice girls , trance that was on the radio (Robert Miles, Lost Witness, etc)

- Around 1999 I went off pop and listened to more dance, like the trance on Ibiza, Breakdown, Euphoria, etc compilations. And big 1999 tunes. Also was into Eminem (heh, I still listen to Marshall Mathers LP)

- 2000 I bought more trance CDs Decided I was interested in being DJ, mainly so I could play all that great music. Bought my first vinyls at the end of 2000, even though I had no decks, except the crappy deck on my dad's hi-fi.

- 2001, trance addiction continued. Listened to as many trance shows as I could on Beat 106, a local station. Heard Strange World (2000 remake), Flesh (Tiesto mix) for the first time, tunes that would become some of my all-time favourites. Saved up money, and bought decks by the end of the year.

- 2002, my personal favourite year for trance. That year I didn't really listen to much except uplifting trance, and a bit of other styles of trance, like tech-trance.

- 2003, continued loving trance, but my tastes started to diversify a bit - not only getting into more prog trance and tech-trance, but listening to other styles of music too, especially Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, rock stuff like that.

Now it's 2004 and I still listen to trance. I still like uplifting, but I'm quite fussy now (to be honest I don't think my taste in uplifting has changed much, there's just less good stuff and more ASOT crap), I like plenty prog and tech trance. Apart from trance I listen to a bit from most styles, like electronic (Underworld, Unkle, Faithless...), still into RHCP, not as much into Foo's and I also like hiphop (underground stuff I don't know the names of, also NERD, Snoop, etc). I'm more open-minded about music than ever, in my playlist and CD collection you'd find some rap, some hard rock, some electronic, and I plan to get into even more good music of different genres...
