me and my mates are all boy racers, so we all love cruisin to some nice drum and bass. yesterday a mate goes to me "Trance is shite. its got no bass". i goes... "If trance had no bass it wud be like listenin to a trance choon u just made which wudnt be verry nice. hes like, no trance has got bass. all of a sudden everyone else is sayin the same. There is no bass in trance at all. so we all goes to the car and i stick on Joyenergizer full volume with the sub connected to the amp, as high as it will go. haha, the result was fantabulous!

When they asked me why I liked it and proceeded to tell me that "ANYBODY can make a techno song on their computer in just a few minutes" (oldest fallacious cliche in the book of trance) I replied with "well what kind of music do you listen to?" For some reason, that shut em all up - I guess they were at a loss for words in the presence of such Trance!

But really - most of what people seem to want to listen thesedays ('pop' music by definition of 'POPular') consists of boring crap written by people who don't know dick about music. With trance, it's universal - it takes serious talent to make an electronic song sound really good and it takes even more talent to make one that people will find catchy and want to dance to. It doesn't matter what language you speak when it comes to trance - you don't need to understand what the song is trying to convey without words - it's open to interperetation and isn't limiting the listener to how somebody feels sad because their girl left them forever (or whatever crap you can think of to touch the hearts of young teenage school-girls). Most people who listen to trance, I mean really LISTEN, will come to understand something more about what makes us tranceaddicts tick - how many other kinds of music unite people in such a way?

Man, one of the best things I've read about listening to electronic music...

I could be glad to find a site with thinkings, texts and quotes like this ...

guess i'm lucky... most of my friends don't listen to trance, house, ambient or idm (my faves), but they listen to equally scattered musics in rock or jazz: so we just talk about things we've heard in the styles we like (finding similar stuff, ideas, etc)

the "tum ts tum ts" and the "all music are the same" remarks are the same people made about rock music... actually, almost ALL those comments are the same people made about any new (relatively speaking) kind of music... sorta ironic, but it wouldn't surprise me if the people saying that had the same thing said to them about the music they like.

dunno what the situation is like where u r, but here in Vancouver a lot of radio stations play rock music from the 70's and 80's... b-o-r-i-n-g far as i'm concerned, but since i listen to stuff at clubs or on Essential Mix, Global Underground, etc, i doubt i'm a big concern.

i still listen to some rock music (saw Mogwai a couple years ago at Richards (local club) and really enjoyed their low-key approach), but find EDM way more "fresh" sounding... most (tho not all) rock stuff sounds recycled from other bands... i think there's a large amount of people who grew up listening to "rock-only" who don't like it that life isn't that simple any more when it comes to "what music are u into?"... too many choices means that u can't just say: "whatever-band-is currently-cool rulez!"

oh yeh... you'd asked for some responses:

sorry... still kinda sleepy... not that i'm much funnier when awake.

As per the 'repetitive' one, just tell them to take the words away from any rap song (which are generally just 'oh, uh, yeah, bitch, ho' anyways) and then see if they notice anything REALLY repetitive...

"i like to think of it as sonic architecture"
"i can't hear u... gone deaf from dancing in front of the PA system too much"
"what do you mean, "it's repetitive"? it's repetitive? like over and over? the same thing? again and again? always repeating?"
"it's SUPPOSED to sound like that? i thought the CD was skipping..."
"please forgive me for enjoying this... from now on i'll slavishly agree with everything you like so you don't feel threatened"
"wait, i'm sure i have a nickelback cd... i use it as a coffee coaster"
"you're right, East L.A. gangsta rap is much more relevant to the life i live. YO! can i borrow your baseball cap?"

haha, thanks man...

By the way...
I think Beatles so repetitive too:
"she love you yeah yeah yeah....she loves you yeah yeah...." and lots of the other 2 minutes songs...

I like the rock stuff too, but the melodic and instrumental, not with nosense guitar noises... I like the bass guitar, so I recommend these tunes for ya:
Rush - yyz
Yes - heart of sunrise
Primus - Tommy the cat
Dream theater - Metropolis part 1
etc...

Re: Calling all trance addicts... help me ...

i like to argue my point of opinion, so i would usually say somthing like this to those questions....

"You re crazy, how do u listen to this same TUM TS TUM TS TUM beats all the day?"

easy. first i turn on my computer. then after that, i open up my music folder. finally, and this is the really amazing part, i click on a set that i want to listen to. Hell, sometimes i just go to DI.com and listen to stramin radio...

"You re funny, all music are the same, the difference is the song name"

I dont suppose you would say that to all the teeny bopper punk bands out there would you?

"The music u listen to is boring because the intro haves 2 minutes..."

ever heard of metallica? yeah, shut your mouth

"Your music have no feelings, you can feel nothing listening to this stuff..."

i suppose G Unit puts "feelings" into their music too huh? yeah, theres so much emotion just listening to them talk about bitches, cars, bling, and sippin yak

"The music you listen dont have vocals, sucks..."

um...... what the hell are you taking about? have you ever even listened to more than one trance song in your life?

"Your music is for "druggaddicts"...

so when snoop raps about smoking weed, i dont suppose that has anything to do with drugs then does it?

My friends don't care, and even listen to a lot of what I listen to. Most of the people who ask me those questions are people I've just met, at which point I usually just say, "I like it, you don't, what does it matter?" Though, D-Res' responses might be used some day.

Posted by djeternal on Oct-02-2004 22:26:

"You re crazy, how do u listen to this same TUM TS TUM TS TUM beats all the day?"

i say "the same way u listen to ur 4/4 (4 by 4)beats all day."

"You re funny, all music are the same, the difference is the song name"

i say "Buy every single album released in recent years of a certain genre and everything is gonna sound the same."

"The music u listen to is boring because the intro haves 2 minutes..."

i saw "2-3 minute intro's buld tension....which is all the more fun when its released...dont u know about tension and release in music?"

"Your music have no feelings, you can feel nothing listening to this stuff..."

i say "and im sure every artist is writing thier own stuff as well...do me a favor and tell me which emotion to play off of? And if u tell me corny love cliche's or riding on dubs...then cram it and find a fucken clue"

"The music you listen dont have vocals, sucks..."

if its a women i say "there are some quality vocal tracks...but not enough...i can make u a cd of good vocals...when can i give it to u?"

if its a guy i say " wat kind of vocals are u into and maybe i can help?" then kick his teeth if he mentions cheese and make sure he never joins the scene ever...

"Your music is for "druggaddicts"...

i say "cocaine is a helluva drug! can u seriously only have to point 1 finger at the trance scene? no other scene got bigger cuz of drugs?"

relax and dont say anything

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Oct-03-2004 03:17:

As for the drugs...

My friend once brought it up that some of the greatest artistic works of a generation were by those who experimented with drugs - take the Beatniks for example, the hippies, etc... I'm not compering trancers to hippies in a literal sense, but drug use does seem to be prevalent in the more insightful artists of generations. The Beatniks created great works of poetry and literature; trance artists create a sort of auditory poetry, if you will

Just something to consider the next time somebody talks about drugs and music/expression. Drugs aren't the devil, ya know!
