Its all about the music...

or it should be. Drugs should be the after thought and not the reason for going. If it is, stay home and do them. There is a big difference being at a party where the vibe is coming from the music and not from the drugs (although the drugs can enhance that vibe, no arguement there).

The problem is when people go for drugs who dont really like the music or care. Thats when u get the sketchers that stand there all night or g out in a corner.

Not doing pills is a personal choice i made years ago only because i knew that id need them to party all time after that and the health effects arent good. I dont find anything morally wrong with drugs as i dont with alcohol. Of course both are subject to being abused but so is just about anything else that makes us feel good.

My point is that at a party the music and kinship with fellow partygoers should come well before any substance as a matter of importance.

i guess the internet is ruining EDM then. If people dont care because they have already downloaded it then thats sad.

Not really. If anything, the internet is promoting EDM, by giving real fans the opportunity to hear what a DJ is spinning before going to a live event, thereby allowing them to make informed desicions whether or not they will enjoy their set or not.

I'd rather hear a DJ's set in the comfort of my room, and decide if i'm feeling his set and then go out and experience it on a large system as it was intended to be heard, and share the experience with a thousand other people where the genuine feel of a party is created rather then go there, expecting to hear trance...and instead find the guy spinning techno.

Knowledgable crowds always seem to be the best one's in my experience, because they go to an event, already hyped up, expecting the DJ to drop atleast some familiar tunes...rather then some of the n00bs i've heard who went to hear sasha and then said something clever like -- "Dude, i've heard that sasha chick is really hot, i hope she plays that ubercool remix of the vengaboys ! "

Posted by Jayx1 on Oct-12-2004 17:09:

i agree...

The internet does allow for more informed partiers however:

Downloading has directly caused a number of smaller dance labels to go under because there are a lot of download djs now who previously bought vinyl. To say that this hasnt impacted the dance music scene is naive at best.

Downloading is only good for promotion if you have the money on the outside to spend on promoting the download or else no one knows to search for a particular artist.

As for informed crowds. hanging on mixes is amazing because there is a lot that many djs do that is so spot on that people think its part of the song already. Informed crowds would realize exactly what the DJ is doing to that tune. James Zabiela comes to mind. I dont think half the people out there knew what he was doing to the tunes. Mark Oliver also does a lot of on the fly remixes that people think are actually part of the song.

Posted by crazedcanuck on Oct-12-2004 17:11:

No matter what, drugs, booze, and a night out go hand in hand throughout history. For everyone it is a differnt mix, and the importance of the music associated with the party is different for everyone as well.

Guv is a perfect example of this. Cheap normal covercharge there, and it's essentially a top-40 crowd, staying because it's open till the a m . Sure there are a ton of hardcore edm fans there to enjoy a MO set, but there are tons of ppl there just to get fucked up.. not because it's EDM, but because it's Saturday night and hey want to get fucked up.

Raving is now fully integrated into the clubbing culture, for better or worse.

The cliche's are unbearable.. like that dumb girl in the Peter Jenning's E Report.. *shudder*

Dood! No need to be an uber-serious, no joking, no games, no fooling around type of person.

It is a joke (applicable to most people on this board) and an endearing one at that.

FYI: Being "buggered" is that blissful state between being messy and being straight.

"Take on the day!"
"Just for the taste of it!"

I don't normally get offended easily, but this is something that is a major concern of mine, and I wanted some serious advise. Thank you to those of you who took my thread seriously, and responded. As for you rabbitjoker, I am all about jokes and having a good time, but this just wasn't the time. But I forgive you.

I've gone through this exact situation myself. None of my friends from home party with the exception of 1. I have to dance around the subject. We constantly have the "I'm wrong, my scene is bullshit and only losers party" fight. No joke. They became very abusive and it really hurt. I know my friends care about me, but they don't respect or understand me as a person. Hence why I don't really hang with them all that often anymore. I don't freak at them because they want to go out to a bar and get loaded every Friday and Saturday night because I respect their decisions and really what they do in their spare time is their business. Like I said I avoid the subject when I do see them because really it's not worth fighting over.

Posted by Jayx1 on Oct-12-2004 20:19:

meanwhile they probably go out and drink all night...puke then drive home...

whats the diff?

to each their own

True story for ya:

My buddy ended up getting into a huge accident while he was "impaired" and was charged. My friends thought he was out with me and had been involved in illegal substances.. Not the case, I informed them. I was out of the city. When they originally thought he was partying with me they were pissed, but when they found out he had been drinking somehow it became OKAY????

What the hell

Posted by Jayx1 on Oct-12-2004 20:29:

The whole drug prohibition thing is stupid. What makes alcohol different from any other drug? Answer: the ability to tax it.

Posted by Kytracid on Oct-12-2004 20:32:

I've found people with the strongest anti partying convictions are usually the ones how have never gone to a club, never done drugs, and usually get their knowledge about all these evil party drugs from paranoia invoking reports and misinformed news articles. Yes, there are some serious risks that you face when you choose to do drugs in a club, and unless you're a complete dumbass you should take the time to find out about the consquences and simple precatious that most experienced clubbers can tell you about.

People fear what they don't understand. Your friends are probably no different. They are right in caring for your wellfare, but if they are judging you on what you choose to do one month of the year, then i'm sorry you shouldn't take a step back and defend your actions. Tell them to get informed, or STFU about stuff they have know nothing about. It might sound rude, but i believe by defending yourself too much it will only give someone the impression that you know it's wrong, and you're helpless to stop doing it so you're defending it.

Most of the people i know who do E, are responsible, successfull adults who are aware of the risks of doing drugs, they also exercise proper restraint and do the simple things when using which keeps them safe. If you can't educate your friends, or point them towards the literature which addresses the issue in a unbiased fashion, then tell them that while you appreciate their concern, you don't appreciate them preaching, or judging you on something that you as an adult have choosen to do.

we both have a lot in common! Although I am lucky to have friends to party with, most of them are not partiers at all....except for the going out and getting trashed thing..! I don't judge others for how they like to party....as I expect the same in return.

I just am curious to ask any of you T'A if you have friends that are not partiers and are totally against doing drugs such as E. I have the most amazing friends. What I love most about my friends is that they are different. But trying to explain to one of my good friends who has never partied that it is a choice I have made a long time ago is not as easy as it may sound. I know drugs are BAD and they have negative side affects and shit....but I think I am old enough and responsible enough to make my own choices and my friends should respect that. I have no regrets trying E. It honestly is the reason how I got into the whole electronic scene. I love the music, I love to dance. I have fallen in love with the scene to know now I don't need drugs, I only get high to dance till the very end!! I have partied sober before though...and I know I just have a blast the same. I love the music too much not to enjoy myself. One of my girls said to me the other day, "aww Kel you are so much better than that..." I have no response to this nor do I think I ever will. People that I know do drugs for the sake of getting F@#!%$ up I will never really understand. That is why I know my situation is different from that kind or crowd. My brother for example.......he will NEVER be a real partier, but yet he has tried the drug and has loved the buzz. I thought maybe him trying the drug would open his eyes to this amazing scene.......but not even close. So my thought is e has given me the gift of appreciating the best music ever and I am lucky to be part of this whole exerience. That is why I have no regrets, and people that think I am less of a person for this........well it is their loss. I guess the reason for this whole thread today is how do you guys deal with this sort of thing... I know I can't be the only one. In conclusion,if there were no music....well there definately would be no point to drugs. It really is all about the music!!

It's not ALL about the music - if it was all about the music then I'd just stay home and listen to mp3s (uh... I mean, CDs, that I purchased, legally, yes that's it...)

But seriously - it's about the music, the friends, the people you meet, the dance floor, the vibe, and well, occasionally the drugs are part of it too. That's what the "scene" is - pure hedonism, nothing more, nothing less. Hedonism comes in various forms, sober and high, it's whatever you want to make of it.

Take it from me, I partied for a year and a half without ever touching a single pill, so I didn't have to "find out" that I could go sober, I knew that all along. I still don't do it often. I've gone many nights without even a red bull, sometimes I just have that much energy, which apparently surprises some people. So I can't help but laugh when I hear preachers thumping on about how drugs are bad and I'm throwing my life away and/or getting a "fake" or "artificial" vibe.

But it doesn't matter that I "can" go without drugs or even that I can enjoy a party just as much that way - the fact is, the scene does take on a whole new meaning with just about every funky chemical, so it is a pretty silly thing to pretend that those chemicals are just quirky little add-ons like a tylenol is to a bad headache. A lot of people start doing E on the same night they start going to after-hours clubs, so they don't realize that just one dose will change your perspective forever and even change who you are a little bit (usually in a good way!). You even say yourself that E was the reason you got into the scene, so obviously it is important even if it is not "required".

I think people tend to try too many new things at once, and it just becomes a big fuzzy hazy mess, and the significance of each individual part of it gets lost or blurred. Because it's not really about the *level* of enjoyment - it's about the *type* of enjoyment and its personal meaning.

Maybe we have to downplay the significance of chemicals to our brainwashed friends, but it's equally nave to pretend that it is "all" about the music and the drugs are insignificant than it is to say it's "all" about the drugs and that they are "evil" or that you're "throwing your life away". The truth is neither of those things, and aside from those of us who've been clean our whole lives, that is something we have to come to terms with. For me, I just tend to be very open with most people about the subject because it doesn't matter to me what they think (with certain exceptions). Some people will freak out, other people turn out to be very curious about it and ask a lot of questions. Same as the music itself - some people think it's garbage, some want to hear more.

Be yourself, not what your friends want you to be!

Ahh seems like we have a few people who are experiencing the love affair with ecstasy. OR should i say, the joys of the honeymoon period which in my opinion is the best part of the whole E experience

Take it from someone who did his fair share, and now only drops on a 4-5 month basis, the key is what i suspect many of your dropping buddies will share with you. Moderation. It's easy the first few times to believe that there's nothing better then being lifted when you've done your roll. Everything just seems better, the music, the human contact, the vibe, the colors. Enjoy it the first few times, because truth be told the magic does ware off even if you regulate it.

What you can gain from doing E however is a certain perspective that i don't think you can truely achieve unless you have felt that euphoria that comes via rolling, and the great thing is -- you can actually carry that feeling long after comming off the high. The memories i've had when i first did E are some of the best ones i can remember. The friends i made during those experiences all agree that sharing that experience transformed an ordinary night into a truly magical one.

To have friends that tell you that you're better then a drug is a blessing. Because it's true. But that shouldn't stop you from doing it. If anything, i'd feel more comfortable knowing that there's an additional security buffer to warn me if i ever started dropping too often. I think as an adult you should be aware of the risks, but you should also be open to the many experiences (positive and negative) that come through using E. As long as you're safe, and make sure you get good dope and are surrounded by a knowledgable group of people who will look after you if things go bad then the risks you face are not much greater then if you went on to the bar for a crazy party (yes - i know ppl will disagree here, but this is just my opinion )

Ultimately it's the music that is important as you said...but if you can do a few things to enhance the experiencee, then go for it -- and have a rolling good time too

I've been blessed with the greatest friends through partying... I met Floorwhore one random night at system (i think it was Luke Fair in January)? Anywho, he introduced me to TA and a ton of great new friends...
