BTW I wonder if we upgraded to the newsest VBullentin (3.0.3), would the search problem be fixed or not?

TA wont be upgrading to a new vB, the amount of custom scripts Swamper has written for this place is umm..well out of hand.

still broken...no matter what time of the day it is used....Swamper please tell me why you took something that worked PERFECT for years and made it not work at all...unless you do a search at 3am

I'm not going to repeat myself, it NEVER worked "perfect", in fact, it bottlenecks the server more than you understand. The vb2 default way of handling search is by creating a HUGE index of words and posts and referencing that - what I use now - is the database server's built-in FULL TEXT SEARCH (MySql 4.x+) which has algorithms that are much faster and results in less overhead from DISK I/O to get the job done.
The problem (which is intermittent) is that database corruption happens at backup time when it shouldn't since it locks all the tables prior and does a repair after the copy - it is not consistent.
If its broken at 11AM it'll stay broken till at least 5:30 AM EST - which is when the next copy takes place - unless I do a manual repair prior. Today's screwup happened on the index of the post table (as opposed to search/user) - so - to do a repair on that would result in the forums being down for 20 minutes (not worth it) - so - today's search is using the main database - which means - the forum will likely bottleneck at peak times today - but - search will work.

tip if search is down: goto google.com and use in the box :
site:www.tranceaddict.com SEARCHTHINGHERE
works a treat and since its google doing the hardwork not the servers makes the forums run faster
