Stop wondering, start wearing.

The foam ones you buy @ the drug store are better than nothing.

it could also be that your hearing was less sensitve to begin with.

some people say that cant hear distortion at the guv, i know i can.

the sound which comes from the speakers is clear, but when all the speakers are put together and the way the room is set up, there is distortion in certain areas. I usually try and stay out of the "box" which they have built with the speakers, otherwise its just too loud.

I have hereditary hearing loss in my family. On my mother's side everybody above 45 has hearing aids.

Got my hearing tested a year ago, my low frequency range is borderline needing hearing aids, my high frequency range is well above normal. Audiologist said the only way someone can have a curve like that is due to hereditary hearing loss - not exposure (exposure damages across all frequency ranges).

Got fitted for custom formed 20 db and 25 db earplugs. Wear them all the time. Cost $200, but my work insurance paid for it. They are well worth it.

Before I got my hearing tested I always wondered why I eq'd the highs down and the lows up, why children talking drive me crazy and why squeals make me irate. After the test it all makes sense.

where did you find an Audiologist? Did your family doctor recomend one? cause id really like to get fitted myself. I dont really care if i have to pay out the ass, my hearing is worth it(hopefully work insurance will cover it)

Posted by TheVrk on Oct-18-2004 17:17:

for me personally, my ears have rung the day after MAYBE
3 times, or 4.....
i'll admit i MIGHT be wrong, but the way i look at it,
if they can repair ur freakin' EYES with lasers,
then ears are in the not-too-distant future
i should be arite til then

When I go to Guv, I LOVE to dance in front of the speakers. I never usually wear earplugs and as far as I know, my hear is fine. I always CHOOSE to hear what I want to hear anyways Its called Selective Listening

Union Hearing Aid Centre Ltd.

They have an audiologist that is there 3 days a week or so to do tests - tests cost ~$30. I had the audiologist write a script for the attenuators and then just submitted a claim to my work insurance - viola it was paid.

I'd never even thought of it before last time Armin was here, when I noticed a few people wearing them.

I plan on it every time from now on.

FYI- The Guv has FREE earplugs at the snack bar.

And another tip: NEVER go see a Motorhead show unless supplied with full-proof earplugs. That was THE loudest thing I'd ever been to. You were still shouting at the person next to you, 1 block away after we'd left (and that's cuz the music was still THAT loud, spilling onto the street).

permanent damage are often not instant, unless it is really severe. you hearing will deteriorate as you age, just like everyone else, but yours will be much much faster. expect yourself to be half deaf by late 40s

They only have them about 20% of the time I ask.

Quick, someone find the thread where the guy asks about ear plugs to use in his car with his mega-expensive sound system.

Posted by trancechaos on Oct-18-2004 18:00:

this has started to bug me lately coz each time i get back from guv my eyes are ringing, sometimes for two days. its damn annoying.
i just hope that i dont go deaf before im 25. and to think that damage can be done in a matter of minutes is scary.

Uh.. That is big problem.

Posted by Izra on Oct-18-2004 18:04:

I can notice some hearing changes also, but I don't like the idea of wearing earplugs out. I am only in the guv once every 2 months tops, you regulars must be close to hearing impared !!

Posted by goodnet on Oct-18-2004 18:11:

I wear earplugs whenever possible at clubs now. I saw tatgirl post a message about those free earplugs @ Guv awhile ago and always get em there. Otherwise if I do not have plugs, I try to at least stay in areas where the sound wont harm as much.

Doing either of the above is 100x better than permanent hearing loss. I highly doubt that even the most expensive medical treatments today or in the near future will bring it back. Just not effin' likely.

The fact that I have trouble hearing a few higher frequencies now at my young age of 20 bothers me greatly. I can't tolerate any more accellerated loss.

the biggest problem is when you are sitting in a very quiet place, and you can hear ringing.

Ya that is totally the worst when ur in bed or somethign and u hear that dull ringing or a high pitched sound man im sure ive done damage cause i frequently get that. But clubs are not the only place with loud music when ever i got my discman or even back in the day walkman its always been on as loud as can be, im sure that has some affect on my hearing as well as loud car systems. Plus i work in high levels of sound frequency but its mandatory to wear ear plugs there. I think im just gonna steal a box from shop and have'em just in case

Posted by dallastar on Oct-18-2004 19:02:

I am VERY concerned

Hence why I am always wearing ear pluggies when i hit the dancefloor -

it's so damaging!!!

yeah iguess people here are forgetting their discmans, and portable audio players.

I made sure to get the mp3 player with the highest possible sound quality, and good headphones, so when i listen, there is no distortion, other than that coming from the actualy mp3 itself. i found the good mp3 player made a huge difference

What mp3 player would that be?
Im running a Sony MZ-N10 MD player. Quality is great with its Dolby sound processor. I've tried other mp3 players and they sound like garbage. Heck even the iPod has distortion when you put the eq presets on.

the best players on the market for sound quality are the Creative Labs players.

ive got:
Creative Nomad Jukebox 3

Its huge, but the sound quality is amazing! i also bought it for the recording capabilities, and surround sound output(4 channel), and removable batteries

all creative players have 98DB signal to noice ratios (for line out) and 96DB for headphones. Super clear, you can crank it and it sounds very good.

note: there is even distortion with this player using the EQ, but thats cause of the poor quality of the live sets. If you load on a high quality cd rip, its all good.

The other player i have is:
Iriver Flash Player

it has 90db signal to noise ratio
