If I was you, I would get the scholarship to the best school possible away from home and then start doing something that I'm really interested in. Once in college, just break an ankle, yours of course, to later on quit the team. Be creative with that. Love your ankles too much, go for the knee. That way your dad won't be disappointed in you.

I was seriously debating whether or not I should do that actually. Its kinda sad. Dont know if I could break my ankle though...Ive done it before and its not fun.

Ive been playing soccer for the past 12 years of my life and now at age 17 getting ready to move the next level of the game, which for me is division I at some college or university. Ok so whats the big problem about this you might ask? Well, to be honest over the past 5 years I have started hating the game more and more. It takes up ALL my time, im fucking sick and tired of the people that are involved with it, and I HATE that I am too afraid to tell anyone that. I myself am a decent player having played on regonional US teams and blah blah blah, and the fact that everyone is expecting and planning for me to go to college and play soccer is driving me insane. All I want to do is quit and move on without any questions asked. Its not that simple though.

I have the opportunity to get full ride scholarship to some of the top soccer schools here in the US. Ive talked with alot of coaches, and visited some schools, but I just dont want it anymore. Problem is I keep telling everyone that I do which is bringing me closer and closer to insanity and is just making it harder for me to tell the truth. My dad's whole life outside of work is about soccer, whether it be watching me play, discussing my plans in soccer for the future, and has spent alot of money and time sending me around the country the past 5 years, playing in tournaments etc. and I dont think I can tell him all the sudden that all of that was just a waist. Know what I mean?

If you understood how much time and extra effort goes into playing college soccer at such a high level you would understand me not wanting to go. I have spent the past 5 years playing high level soccer where it seems my entire life is just revolving around soccer and the feeling that I could be doing for another 4 just drives me crazy.

This is the first time I have really told anyone this because its easier here. So do you guys have any advice or something, or I dont know. I dont even know what im talking about anymore. Im so confused!! ack...

You are a very lucky guy, do not waste your opportunity.

I have played soccer all my life and was a gun player, but injuries kept me from competing at a high level. I had the technical skill but my knees are fucked, and I kept getting other injuries.

When you do anything for a long period of time you can get bored with it, but anybody that is successful knows that you are standing at the edge of success when you get this feeling. When you feel like giving up is when most people do in fact give up, so power on through it.

Make it interesting though, try and spice it up. If you have the talent do not waste it, because you will regret it later.

I want what you have.

This is YOUR life - don't listen to what other people have to say about it. This includes: your father, your coach, your mother, your counselor, your girlfriend, your boyfriend, me and the rest of the TAs.

Though we may have good advice, heed it well by taking it to heart - don't subscribe to it and follow-through with what somebody shares just because it's out there and it's easy. Your life will inevitably be defined by you if it is even a life worth living - not somebody else. Do what you want within reason. I know it's tough - you're being torn in many different directions, I'm sure. Just keep a level head about things and always keep your own best interests in mind. This is not selfishness, this is self-interest and through so many, many years and opportunities, many people have yet to realize its worth.

This is your life: you only get 1, don't waste it doing what other people expect/advise you to do.

Don't be a stubborn prick about things, either

I've found that happiness comes through a certain balance of many essentials in life and -although focus is very good- you have lots of time left to decide what you want to do. There is no such thing as a bad decision, only bad outcomes. Might as well take the chance and trust yourself

Got a High School Senior playing Football in a Military Academy who is doing real damn good considering he was expelled just this past April and never played before. Like 3 touchdowns and 150 yards is good. The big street punk is just hard to bring down. I call him a street punk because what else do you call a kid who's been expelled from public school twice and dismissed before from the military academy and arrested for drugs/runaway? He's doing good for a change and now I'm trying to convince him to go to ROTC instead of straight into the Army as a private.
OK, so I'm a parent and I'm looking at your situation. Soccer has been the bane of your success. You can get a scholarship by just playing the game whether you're really into it or not. That saves your folks a few bucks. I know you're not into the game, but you might change your mind at the college level because you have to travel around playing different teams and therefore, visit more campuses, meet more chicks, etc. which is not necessarily bad. Talk to some of the soccer dudes on the college team you're thinking of applying for before abandoning all reason. I don't like to be a computer genius and be stuck with database programming all the time; I have other interests. You don't like to be a soccer phenomena and stuck with holding a team together with your athletic abilites. Sometimes you just have to go with the lot you're cast in life and adjust later on. Later on would be best in your case as my humble advice.

i think it is a big assumption to think that all kids get to go to college on their parent's paycheck.
i dont assume that...

if his parents cant.. then he needs to get a job

its simple..

making ur parents pay for it.. i ment dont rely on the scolarship.... and just pay tuition.. if u cant afford it go to a community school

In Sweden it's not that bad. I get money because I study... so I'm fine with that.

What you are going through is very normal. And all this has probably been said before.

Like butterfly I used to be a swimmer. I started to get sick of it, scaled back for a little while, took two months off at one point and didn't even go near a pool, didn't watch any swimming on tv or anything. Afterwards, I returned fresher more motivated and enjoyed it immensly once again. Maybe thats what you need to do, take an extended break and don't even think about soccer, and at the end you will prob return fresh and with a new 'spark'. What is happening is that you are getting burnt out, so you NEED to take a break. I'm saying this asuming you are pretty much playing/training all year round.

And don't bust your knee - i've done that too. Its not pretty, is incredibly painful for about six months, and will always give you problems afterwards - mine still get sore regularly three years on. And being a socce player, I question your ability to withstand pain

Posted by Kakoroto on Oct-24-2004 02:30:

There are no breaks for me. I dont even remember the last time I had a break longer than a week. Its back to back soccer. Whenever im not playing soccer, I am hearing about it somewhere, whether it be involving me or not. Now with the possibility of going into college to play, I have to start training harder then ever before to get prepared...I really do need to relax for a while, but it seems that I wont have that opportunity anymore.

What do you guys think about Division I vs. Divison II programs and schools?
