sorry but i have to disagree. if tracks were made primarily for listening they wouldn't be 8 mins long.

fact of the matter is, trance/techno etc ARE made for clubs primarily, this is their prupose as far as i am concerned... there are a lot of tracks that sound shite when you are sat at home listening, but when you hear them in a club.. OMG!! if they were made primarily for listening this just wouldn't be the case

Just to continue on what tu_face has said :

I listen to Askew tracks on my monitor speakers and they sound awesome. However, when his tracks are played on a club system its f#ckin insane!

Point I am trying to make is this :

IMO a shitty track on your home system will only sound sh!tty in a club. However a good track on your home system will sound unreal on a club system. Especially tracks, suck as Askews, which have that pumpin bass.

IMO the differnce between an Askew track and any other heavy purcussive peice (which might just sound boring on a club system) is found in Askews ability to create a melodic feel to his tracks. Its not your typical 'boom boom ' sh!t that scares all the girls off the dance floor. Askew has a unique talent to turn a purcussive laden peice into something interesting and energetic. That is the genius behind John Askew.

I dont understand this at all, you say PvD has 'crashed and burned', you have 'dont immitate, innovate!!' written in your sig, then along comes a guy trying to emulate PvD in every possible way, in terms of production and djing & you think he deserves to 'get big' ??

Anyway his productions are good technically (for what they are) - hes massively hit and miss, but his production is tight - whoever said his powerful kick & bassline is just a matter of 'cranking the volume up' is a bit of a muppet really, opinion or not.

wot a load of shit (imo )

i dont think ive ever even heard an askew tune with a proper vocal... a LOT of pvd's has vocals!

pvd is also the man behind trippy melodic lil numbers like forbidden fruit, connected etc

FAR FAR away from bangin and pumpin wouldnt u say?

pvd LOVES askews stuff, no question, but any1 who goes clubbin does as far as im aware!

askew is a fuckin hero legend genius of the finest order as far as im concerned!

i fuckin LOVE him! one of my very fav producers!

also he seems to b in it coz he LOVES it! not to get his face plastered on a thousand CD covers! he still does ilegal warehouse parties too far as i know! wot a legend id love to meet him

Posted by Technaut on Oct-28-2004 17:16:

i really like his tunes and his dj sets.

the door, his remix of castenada and introspection are great.

the mix he done for di.fm recently, 'askew's teck-funk mix' is fucking great.

ive e-mailed the guy a few times before and he is really freindly and always replies, quite a funny **** too!

You really are a muppet, this just proves that fact. PvD has crashed and burned, so what I take a song title of his and put it in my sig. I can do as I please and I think that it still good advice for today.

actually i pitch up +4 - 5%.
But yeah, he makes his tracks at too low a BPM imo.

+1

And his melodies are always subtle and soft. No hard or distorted melodies. A seamless blend of pure bass and melodious highs.
Class.

all tracks are made to be heard in a club. thats what this music is all about anyways and if you have been to one i think you would agree with me

haha, today i disagree with you and i am a muppet, yet about two days ago when i agree with you i am 'well informed and know more than most on here' or something along those lines

my issues is not with you taking a track title, that was beside the point. The point is john askew offers nothing more than PvD does, yet one has 'crashed & burned' & one is new & fresh and deserves to get big. I'm not disagreeing with your assesment of the situation but something in there doesnt make any sense.

you are wrong.

john askew offers much more than pvd does. his music and his dj sets are very much different to any artist around usually. well, put it this way, john askew has never bored the living shit out of me, pvd has.

john askew is not trying to emulate pvd in any way, and i think that is possibly the most ridiculous comment i have ever heard from you.

Posted by scAza on Oct-29-2004 10:26:

i LOVE john askew and i LOVE pvd!

but they r very different in production and DJing

Posted by djdk on Oct-29-2004 10:52:

I love Johns stuff,

The Door and Are You Reading Me are wicked.

And his remix of Sensorica - Few Days Away is just plain awesome, it has so much energy and drive behind it. I challenge anyone to NOT dance to this in a club, i dont think its possible! The bassline just grabs your ass and makes it wiggle

Thats the only production of Askew so far I really like! Good melody and the beat well, .. there's said a lot about his beats on this thread and I don't really agree on how unique and proper they fit, I don't see (correct: hear ) any difference with a lot of other trance productions nowadays, but okay, ... thats just my opinion here

ps. For instance the break in Waterplanet - Introspection (John Askew Remix) is much too long, and the melody is not really adding that much to it either, ... I think a big shame because the samples and sounds in that track were good!

Posted by Sand Leaper on Oct-29-2004 12:57:

The fact that Paul keeps playing Askew's productions as well as signing them says enough about whether Askew is trying to "emulate PvD" or not.

Recently, his sound has gone a bit stale IMO, much thanks to the ever so prominent kickdrum. His early output is wicked though, I still remember when DJ Stigma blew my socks off with Vellum in 2002.

lol, you guys are crazy!!!
works more then fine at regular speed!

but again, this tune is ka-omg. he adds the melody so perfectly not making it too overwhelming as we got too many examples of these days imo!
And this mans kick drums are frigin' awesome! fits like a glove to this one! weeeoo

Posted by scAza on Oct-29-2004 18:43:

i agree it wouldnt hurt perhaps changing the structure of his tracks a bit more... u can always INSTANTLY recognise an askew track, same as u can a murano one.

but for those of us that still arent bored by the relentless energy and air-tight production of his tunes, we aint complainin
