Screw the big dj's, pwn them out of the place and get the crowd pumped. Show them you can do the same exact thing as him

Oh...and play Trafik - Your Light (Luke Chable Vocal Remix)

and try to meld it with the feel of the crowd and your own

i'll just see how the other opener opens, and just pick it up from there

i am not nervous or scared that i'l screw up, just excited to play for sasha and playing infront of a huge crowd.

I hate to see responses on here that say that someone should rock the floor before a headliner. Its DJ's like that, that piss me off to no end, and they piss off the headliner to no end as well. People like Sasha, Jimmy Van M, Digweed and others all often travel with specific warm ups in order to get the club to have a specific groove before they come on. They want people to be ready to go off, and waiting for them to come on, so that when they do, the place explodes. The notion that you should be able to play big becuase Sasha should be able to play bigger should be thrown out the window and so should anyone who mentioned its records.

Last 3 times Tiesto was in Edmonton or Calgary, e requested the same Dj to warm up the Crowd. He specifically asked for Cary Chang so that the opener would not be playing Trance in the same fashion that he was going to. You never ever want to play what the headliner is going to play. If people are coming to hear Sasha, they are coming to hear the Sasha sound which right now is a lot of breaks from when I saw him last and listened to his sets, ergo, you should not play breaks because if people want them, they want to hear Sasha play them NOT YOU. its his night, he's the rockstar and people want him to be one. They would rather go off super hard to Sasha because you primed them correctly, than go off to you because you broke out your big records

Someone mentioned that you should not play anything recent by Sasha and that would be absolutely correct. Don't touch a Sasha record or remix that people will identify with, xpander would be the worst thing you could play followed by anything off involver. Old sasha remixes can be OK if they're old enough and people won't go "oh fuck yeah a Sasha record". If I was opening for Sasha i'd stay on top of a groove, play anything thats got a dancy clubby feel to it, bould a groove that slightly housy so that people are dancing and not just throwing their hands in the air. This doesent mean you dont get to play big, pick a time about a half hour before sasha goes on to peak out your set. Play a couple of nice big records to get people jacked, and then bring it back down for the last half hour so that people are DYING to hear sasha by the time you get off.

Trust me, Sasha will appreciate it, so will the crowd even if you don't get the "fuck guy you ruled" comments after the show. I've had the good fortune to open for some guys like Sasha but not him specifically, I even get to warm for BT soon, and all of them mention that its the right way to do it.

yeah, but surely any promoter worth their trendy hairdo should have ensured that the warmup is right, and so he really shouldnt need to change what he plays..otherwise the promoters fucked up. if your booking sasha, you dont go getting 3 or 4 trance djs to the warmup.pretty much just using your noodle.

Posted by Colin Andrews on Nov-03-2004 01:10:

Booking a prog and trance DJ is a wide thing to book. Theres everything from the very mellow to the very hard within those genre's so my comment still stand. Its primarily the DJ's responsibility, because most likely the promoter is booking on reputation.

I can't even believe you brought that in. That's not at all the same thing not even the same planet.
Such an ignorant statement.

The whole idea of anyone playing whatever they feel like playing no matter what their slot is truly comes from the whole rave scene; the idea of instant gratification which is more damaging then building.

If a dj is insensitive as to what other djs are doing he needs to be shot.

Twista has been placed right before the headliner which does give him the right to push it more then the ones prior to him but under no circumstances should he be banging it!

You're really not getting what I'm saying, are you?
I'll try and explain this one more time with little words so you can grasp it this time.
Twista should be able to play a great set, with the only "off limits" material being Sasha related stuff. Aside from that, he should not have to downplay his talents.
thankyoupleasrdrivethru.

@ colin andrews

yea thats no problem because i usually open for resident dj's @ local clubs here.

hehe i am thinking about dropping "nothing" the local people here digs that song still lol

Posted by tubby on Nov-03-2004 01:40:

there's nothing to do with downplaying his talents, but his job that night is to build up towards a peak during sasha's set. If opening is not one of your talents, don't be surprised if you get very few bookings, since opening for bigger names is the best way to work your way up the food chain.
I've largely stopped attending events in sydney with up and comer's as they play peaktime sets from beginning to end, there's no progression in the night and very little interest. the skill of building a night seems lost these days, as soon as you can mix reasonably people think they're ready to take over

If you think that not rocking the dancefloor is downplaying talent, you have no idea what a talented DJ is.

Posted by tbias on Nov-03-2004 01:59:

Play loads and loads of trance.

Then hopefully Sasha will follow suit...

Posted by wolverine16 on Nov-03-2004 02:00:

Be Cool!

Wow,that's quite an honor! Good luck with your set. I'm sure you have your own style you've developed, so combining that with not playing any of Sasha's songs, you should be fine it wont interfere with his set. It's fine to have 2 DJs in a row who play the same genre when they have their own styles and aren't playing the same tracks. People will be there to see Sasha, but you have to put your best effort into this too, because it's a great opportunity to get some exposure and you always want to do your best at something you love. If you're talking about Holden & Thompson - Nothing, it's always a good track to play.

Posted by tbias on Nov-03-2004 02:06:

Post your idea of what your tracklist will be...

I'd love to get an idea.

And whenever you get a gig from now on it will say "played alongside the likes of Sasha..".

if i turned up to see sasha and the dj was playing trance, id think 'whats this all about..promoters not got a clue'. + i think the promoter should know at least what sort of sound the dj on before the headliner is going to play, not that he 'heard from around the block that the kid's got mad skilzz'.

if i was a promoter i certainly would.

Posted by Dmatrox on Nov-03-2004 04:14:

take a listen to sets of jimmy van m when he opens for sasha. that will give you an idea. Think of it was a 'warm-up' before sasha where you want to get people to come on the dancefloor before sasha comes on and you can keep the people entertained and not burned out before sasha hits the decks, so that means more laid back, may be groove deep house style - no trance.

ya, so listen to any Jimmy Van M set where he opens for Sasha.

Posted by limin_li on Nov-03-2004 04:41:

hey brother, let DJ tadi be a closer.

Posted by kron on Nov-03-2004 04:49:

congrats Twizta. damn i remember those good ol' days when you were the only one other than me who tuned in to GDJB week after week. and now you are opening for sasha! rock the crowd. some of my friends from hong kong are going to shanghai to see sasha too. good luck!

Posted by kron on Nov-03-2004 04:51:

and man.. you are only 17 too. way to go.

Posted by nrjizer on Nov-03-2004 07:21:

Pick tracks with a lot of intensity to them... the kind of tracks that seem to say "oh man, just you wait, what's coming next is gonna blow your mind!" But the mind blower never comes... at least until Sasha arrives.

That's what your job is, to get the crowd itching, just waiting to go off. Don't listen to the idiots who are telling you to go all out and rock the crowd. Be professional, respect your timeslot and respect the fact that it's Sasha's name up on that billboard, not yours.

I say don't go with the melodic kind of stuff, Sasha has been moving away from that lately. Try this track: Burger Industries - Derby (click for sample). That's the sorta sound that makes a great warmup... brooding, intense, really builds up the crowd. Not that you have to take that track to heart, though. Just an example.

Oh, and while it's very important not to go overboard, it's almost equally important not to mellow it out too much either, or your crowd will get bored, and will just sit around waiting for Sasha.
