To Andrew's point, K-W is a really small EDM community that is almost like a clique. Your success in this city is pretty much predicated on how much time you spend posting on the local message board and whether or not you attend other local events... not so much on who you bring in. You also have an uphill battle if you want to throw a trance event, because the enthusiasts in the area aren't really into trance. I luck out by having a room in a mainstream club that people who aren't in the know can wander into.
It IS possible but if you think you're going to be successful throwing a huge one-off right away you may want to think it through... people go out to your parties because they know and like you and the djs playing there. Also, the night HAS to be in Waterloo by the Universities; that's your market. People won't go to Kitchener.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, I worked in promotions there for 3 years... best of luck.

the idea is great!!
KW's population can definitely use a place to chillout to some EDM...
Phil's would be sick, with their cheap drinks and some quality EDM music!!

Haha, I remember I was at Phil's once and I asked for a glass of water without any ice, as I normally do, because I don't like drinking freezing-cold water.
First time, she missed the request. Second time (I made a point of pleasantly and diplomatically raising the point that I had requested no ice) I got more ice... Third time, I had ice water yet again and went to talk to the manager. He told me that the waitress had said I was giving her a hard time! What a piss-off. I've been to much crappier places and gotten better service.
Oh, and that was the night that they had some sort of water main issues and the bathrooms were nice and slippery. Proudly, I added to the piss smell that night
^Haha horror stories. Good to know though.
Ill fire out an update in a day or so with the possibilities
Thank you dennis aswell, im sure you experties will come in helpful if we got some Q's for ya (and get ya spinning ofcourse)

It seems as if there is a small portion of ppl that come out in K/W, and then some local university students that might come out.. but for the most part, a lot of the older ppl that are serious EDM fans have written off their own town, and they only come out when it's in TO and it's a headliner, and usually only to guv (not system or boa etc...) just an observation.. it's unfortunate that some ppl think that the big city is the only place that has something to offer when there are actually a lot of talented locals.. |
Hopefully it turns out, when you have something I'd be happy to play for you...
Being a resident at KW for 2.5 years due to University life I've partied at a couple of places. Too bad Frequency left. I really enjoyed their breakbeat nights. Purple room is OK. Its way too monotonous, thats the reason it doesn't get a big crowd. Its always the same rotating people showing up. Noone knows anyone, and the 'vibe' seems to get polluted (pardon my language) from the mainroom. I heard starlight is improving and such. It will def need to be checked out.
Any EDM events organized at the university are poorly organized. The DJs usually come out and play trance, club, etc. Its true some people like it but the crowd is small. There is usually only one type of EDM played. Sometimes people get bored, and some get excluded. The parties are not even advertised well. Alot of people like electronica, but noone knows about these events which are organized.
In my opinion, if you want something to succeed on campus, you'll have to go a bit large, but not too regular. Get a larger number of DJs. Have some varieties of music, trance, prog, drum n bass, techno etc, especially booty, breaks, & house since they are easier on the newbies and easier to dance to.

When the party is organized the advertising is the key. Everyone, and I repeat, nearly everyone should know about this party. Post flyers everywhere on campus. (Both campuses, UofW, and WLU) Before 8:30am class put flyers on all the seats. Tape flyers on all the boards. Ask the different societies, science society, math society, etc to send information about the party in their general emails that they send. Write adds on the road with chalk, (its very effective) since alot of people walk on campus and stare at the ground...
One problem at the university is that people are extreamly anti-social. So you'll have to make this party friendly to people who dont know each other. Like for an example, ummm... have alot of seats, a bar for drinking, an MC to TALK and interact with the partiers, tell them info and etc.
The Bomber would be a good place for this. If you dont know how to begin contacting them. I'll tell my friend, one of the Bomber supervisors, to find who can be talked to.
Good luck, and if you decide to do this, I'm willing to help.
PS: Anyone can enter the Bomber, it doesn't have to be UofW students. So you can even target the entire KW region.

-Drazen
Drazen: Can you get me that contact?
Ampz
NP: I'll ask him.
Also, the date of the party is critical. Many many students enter and exit the town all the time. If its a hollyday weekend, you'll get noone. If its a midterm week weekend, or the second half of the term, you'll get noone, since work is hard and exams are close by.
The first 6 weeks of the term are the best. Since noone has much work, and everyone is partying. Make sure its one of those dead weekends with no hollydays nearby so most people remain in the city.
Thats somewhere inbetween.
Sept 1st - Oct 15th
Jan 1st - Feb 15th
May 1st - June 15th
take care.
Check your PM, Ampz.

Don't get discouraged if the turnout is small at whatever event you're planning.
Don't aim too high, but expect small at first. If you want to expand EDM scene in KW area, you'll have to think long term, maybe even years.
Maybe start en EDM club in UWaterloo. Clubs get discount for use of Fed Halls for events. Maybe it'll grow into something big.
PS: Paddy's is now Musselini's oyster and pasta bar. The new management apparently wants to keep the same Paddy's ideas going though. (Or so I hear)
PPS: If any of you happen to meet an asian guy w/ glasses in army uniform on thurs night, do say hi. =)
