2 bucks is 2 bucks... that's like a whole snack pack of Timbits at Tim Horton's ... now that's an addiction!

I am currently taking Effexor (150mg a day) - prescribed to control mild depression and panic attacks (which unfortunately are not so mild). Initially I was taking them for around a year and they worked very well. On my doctors advice, since I was back to full health, I gradually reduced the dosage and eventually went off them altogether. Everything was going well for the first 2-3 months but then, health wise, I went straight back to square one and had to go back on them. I have been taking them for 2 years since this and to a certain extent they have worked but I have tried to come off them a couple of times though the feelings of depression and the panic attacks have always came back. My advice would be to never get involved with any anti-depressant (I have been on two different ones - neither have worked well) as they don't "cure" the problem and they are extremely difficult to wean yourself off. Go to a doctor and tell him that you want to see a therapist and talk your feelings out - it does help. Medication does not seem to be the answer as no-one I know who takes anti-depressants have benefitted from them. Fight it naturally if you can. It's very difficult and it might take quite a while (you may always have it) but I think it's the best way.

likewise, as well as severe anxiety/panic attacks, u name it, i've got it

I spent ages on seroxat (paxil i think over the pond) and the comedowns are horrific, it took me 2 weeeks to fully feel ok and i was falling over, looked like a vegetable and was sick/shaking lots

I was on effexor for a couple of months 2 years ago but got stopped cos my liver reacted badly to it so i got moved back onto seroxat then. i've since come off it (the 2nd time) and i'm on citalopram atm, it doesn't do alot for me, but it just does enough to make it worthwhile waking up

This thread is a proof that TA hurts your brain... look at all the people who posted that they take anti-depressant drugs... Maybe I should go to the doctor and tell him to prescribe some anti-depressants, just to follow the trend

Id still like to hear from more people who think that drugs are a nice solution to treat the symtpoms, but when you take the drugs away, the underlying problems are still there. It's ridiculous to think that this only applies to "illegal" or "illicit" drugs, but that perscription medications are ok. I believe that any chemical you take into your body is a possible catalyst for addiction, not just the "bad" drugs...

i hate that drug. my dad was prescribed it a few years ago as he was suffering from depression, its totally changed him, even since he has stopped taking it. he is now a completely different person to the dad i used to love.

anti-depressants in general are really bad. i know a few people who have had to take them and from what i have seen they can cause more harm than good. i can understand how they help some people, its probably just that i have never seen these cases first hand.

This entire class of drugs is given out like candy in the US to anyone who goes and sees the doctor and says they are kinda sorta feeling down.

While I'm sure they might help someone with a real chemical imbalance that causes cronic depression, the average Joe with a temporary bout often finds taking them is worse than the depression.

Then you have people who have a real problem, like severe anxiety, and the doctors only want to give you crap SSRIs because there is no abuse potential when what you really need is a benzo.

The only SSRI with worse side effects/withdrawals is Paxil. I don't know how anyone tolerates it.
