Well, technically it's free, as a mod. You need to purchase the game to play it.

But yes, you can play it right now. If you have steam, you can purchase HL2 and pre-download it, and it will activate and start working on tuesday. In the meantime, you can play CS Source now (it's been available for a month or so).

half-life 2 is being sold at best buy, is from what everyone says and what the pictures say. but its not like its being sold at all best buys. also maybe they got the OK from vivendi to sell it already or broke street date in which they then get fined big time... the new eminem cd was suppose to come out on tuesday the 16th, but at target (where i work in miramar, fl) we started selling it on friday because the label said it was ok because they got pissed at how fast it was leaked on the internet....... DUH U DUMBFUCKS! ITS EMINEM! of course its gonna be leaked. anywho, if u pre-purchased hl2 thru steam u could have been playing cs source since the beta ended. my friend bought it and i use his account to play.

ima huge gamer and TA yet rarely post under this thread, dunno why. i play ra3 and cs 1.6/source. i play ut2k4 sometimes. my game name is profX or professor X.

It is indeed being sold at BestBuy, but no one can play it until Tuesday. Valve requires the game be authenticated with steam once, then it's good to go. So no matter which way you get the game (Retail, Steam, warez) you ain't playing it till Tuesday.

i know but its also retarded because everyone has to authenticate steam even when they buy it retail. which means everyone then has to make a steam account if they don't have one. its gonna suck for people who have 56k and cant get broadband like my uncle. dude loves pc games, but 56k is fuckin horrible compared to broadband now. i just feel sorry for my uncle and dial-up users around the world who have to authenticate and maybe be online everytime they have to play. i remember reading that valve said u only have to authenticate once, hopefully its true.

You only have to authenticate once, yes. I wouldn't worry too much about being on dialup though, it's just a small little file needed to unencrypt the executable.

I'm def. gonna buy the game Friday.

yea, and it's a one-time thing, i honestly doubt they'd be stupid enough to make it a requirement that you have to be online, connected to Steam, each time you wanna play the single-player.

I'm not too concerned about it. Honestly, who has a powerful rig capable of running this game, but can't get it on the internet one way or another for 5 minutes?
