As opposed to one who feels so inadequate at his craft that he has to argue with others on an Internet forum over the meaning of "SLR?"

has nothing to do with interchangeable lenses.

pwned?

I'm sorry went to bed and missed the whole fight. Malek you're wrong and its even more of an embarrasment you get paid and you still dont know basic photo terminology. Its never to late to learn...

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictiona...reflex%20camera

"The single-lens reflex camera, more commonly known by the abbreviation SLR, uses a mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen."
...
"The SLR cameras also offer the ability for the photographer to quickly and simply change the lens, thus making them versatile."

*sigh*

don't tell about how its implemented, tell me about what was the goal behind SLR. And its: one lens used both for viewing and taking the picture. So meaning: When you look in the viewfinder, you see exactly what the lense is "seeing" so when you'll take the pic, you'll take exactly what you see in the viewfinder.

Now, back then, the only way to implement that was with a mirror or pentaprism.

fast forward 30 years, electronics can do the same: let me explain myself.

An electronic viewfinder which doesn't need the mirror or the pentaprism can be used to show you exactly what kind of picture you're taking. Hence the appelation SLR for some digital cameras.

SLR has been implemented with the mirror/pentaprism for so long that it has became the norm, even though other imlpementations can do the same thing.

so by your definition a large format field camera could also be considered a "SLR" because the view finder shows you what the lens is "seeing" stop being obstanent admit you wrong so we can move on.

I bought a Sony DSC-W1 last weekend.

Decent camera for the amateurish stuff I am doing: taking photos on my travels etc etc. Got a huge screen, small camera, takes as decent photos as I need and good value too. Anything more is frankly a waste of Benjamins

Eh camera doesnt really matter so much as the person using it

it does when its just an amateur taking pics, consumers just want ease of use and "point&shoot" functionality while maintaning good quality.

I had a point and shoot for a good while before I got my DSLR...and although the quality of the DSLR photos is definatley better...the basic techniques and motives havnt changed...

crappy but it gets the job done:

HP Photosmart 320 (example of quality on my avatar)

put it this way.. i'm willing enough to mess aroudn with exposure and other settings on the camera, but im not really bothered enough to get pysically involved i.e. changing lenses.
