I like all forms of music so why not EDM but I haven't chosen it over any other genre, its not possible for me to pick a specific type of music I like the most and then not listen to everything else. I'd go crazy.
because 4/4 on the floor is sooo powerful... and when u get tired of that theres also breaks n jungle in edm as well.

i dont know really. looking back over the years it's the last music i would have chosen - when i first started listening to EDM I was a massive oasis/blur fan. then i listened to some essential mixes that my mate had on tape and it kind of went from there...stagnated after 2001 and i came back into it massively in 2003 when i started going clubbing properly
what i love about it now is the fact it has a completely different atmosphere to any other events. and mixing allows you to be creative, no matter how shit you are

I started out as a kid listening to classical/baroque, b/c my grandfather was a pianist and that's all I was ever exposed to. I was never much into the "popular" scene, I never even owned a CD until I was in 6th grade. I think one of the reason I like it so much is b/c it has a lot of similarities with the classical music on which I was raised; both styles are precision-designed and each note is purposefully chosen. Pieces are designed and complex, and build up to a climax of emotion. Of course the improvisation that goes into a DJ set or to a jam session is essential to capturing the energy of a large audience, but I love the complex, building, intelligent forms and sounds of progressive electronica. And then there are groups like Hybrid that blend electronic sounds with orchestral instrumentation, making for a completely euphoric experience 
Nowadays i've really started to dislike EDM.. To be honest there's so much other great music that you shouldn't limit yourself to listening to only one genre..
I had always liked instrumental versions of popular songs, then I found a genre (besides symphonic music...the genre, not the vinyl) that was comprised of a majority of instrumental tracks.
I find that most of the time, vocals can distract from the instrumentals if not used properly. Imo, most songs fail to do this, whereas there are a good amount of pieces within edm that effectively blend the instrumentation.
When I was 6 or 7 years old I would always listen to the radio at night before I would go to bed. I was very lucky to grow up in Chicago during the 80's when we had a dance music radio channel and good DJ's. It was from this dance music station that I was exposed to Chicago House music at an early age. This created my passion to DJ.
I remember when I was a kid I would always looked at dance music as music that changed with technology. It was centered on shit I couldn't understand when I was younger. It amazed me how these songs or tracks could be made. For example, I would be fascinated in hearing the changes occur in sound each month and each year in dance music. For example, it was interesting for me to compare songs of Depche mode and New Order to songs found in a Frankie Knuckles mix. Or listen to a 1992 Bad Boy bill mix and compare to a 1993 Bad Boy Bill mix. Dance music for me had no boundaries and made me imagine what it could sound like in the future. This was the key difference between dance music and other forms of music.
As far as I can remember, there were two songs that really got me hooked to trance.

There was just so much good stuff back then that I listened to, it's kind of hard to narrow them all down. But I will tell you that Astral Projection really did it for me back in the day.
Then one day, I saw the Ferry Corsten CD, Mixed Live @ Spundae for sale at a music store. I listened to it at the booth and was instantly captivated (although seduced would probably be a better word) by the first song on the CD: Holden and Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning Mix). I bought the CD and I can honestly say that that CD changed my outlook on music (for the best, I'm not at all satisfied with the popular music that is polluting the airwaves right now). Anyway, the CD helped me realize what REAL trance music was all about, and from there on out, that was it for me.
Cause it is the only genre that really explores all the boundaries of sounds.
You could only do so much with jazz, country, rock, metal, I'm not gonna go into hiphop cause the culture just sucks.
Between you and me...the other genres just got stale.Real stale.
I've listened to hardcore rap since around 1984. Reggae since 1992. Both turned to absolute fucking shit in the late 90s.
Trance keeps what they lost-
the mixability
the collaberations of artists
the use of turntables
the underground/non mainstream aspect
I just love music without singing for the most part. Of course some lyrics compliment trance tremendously (Amoeba Assassin). I've loved electronic bleeps and bloops since the NES days of Mega Man.
From the posts i've been reading it seems like almost everyone on this board that used to like hip-hop doesn't anymore. I think thats a shame, there are some really great artists in the underground right now and I think it sucks that if you like or liked hip-hop that you wouldn't expose yourself to that anymore just because it got mainstream. Its the same with trance, its gone mainstream and now theres all this crap but there are still great artists forging ahead in trance and hip-hop alike and I think everyone thats jaded on hip-hop or the great trance from 98-00 you should really re evaluate their position and look for those great artists that redefine the genre and make it something that we can all be proud of. Screw genres I'm here for the good music be it trance or house or hip-hop or jazz or drum n bass or classical or rock or any other style of music there will always be people that bring something real to the table, its not about setting boundaries, its about eliminating them.

this is a good topic .. what brings me to edm..
it's the beats, rhythms, and sounds..
i follow the bass sometimes, but i feel it is overused a lot..
when i first got into edm, i was dipping into many different genres .. house, dnb, dance, trance, techno.. somedays i would listen to underworld .. another would be roni size .. then another day it would be like ace of base and olive .. then debbie deb .. that was the early days .. my mind was like a complete n00b back then ..
then came the internet, and i was more "educated" what edm music really is, and that's how i got into trance.. i was brought in by the rhythm .. one of the first albums bought was robert miles 'dreamland' of course .. would listen to the whole album like three times a week without skipping .. hahahhahaa..
of course i chose edm over the other genres, because the popular genres are not moving me anymore .. come on .. do you think i would be listening to good charollete, fat joe, usher, or outkast all the time?? not everyday .. i would not be hooked on it .. edm gets me hooked.. if i do listen to the radio, then i would listen to contemporary stuff (80's and the 90s) .. can't get into current rap and alternative at the moment .. r&b is ok, but not as good as back then .. where is brian mcknight when we need him???

Started off loving punk music, but all good things must end, so here i am.
Oh, and it all started off with some cheese (Trance Voices Vol8). Little did i realize it wasnt really trance lol
