I agree with you Sean, if someone has gotten to the level of a professor, they'll generally know their stuff pretty well. As for getting along with them, personalities clash easily, it's how it goes I guess.

If I end up getting into UBC, I'll probably ask to meet up with some TA's, get shown around etc.... Will I be able to ask some of you?

well obviously if you're a prof you know something... but that doesnt mean they're great teachers, ive been lucky so far and had decent profs all round, but my friends are always complaining about idiotic or biased profs.
even in english for example, this year i have a guy who is NEVER wrong, so basically if you venture a differing opinion, he goes "yeah... but no i dont think so"

to everything and everyone...

so i was just wondering if any of the english ones stood out, to your knowledge, sean who's your shakespeare prof, and what course #?

English 348, 6 credit Shakespeare/Elizabethan class. Prof is K. Sirluck, she's awesome, I would definitely definitely recommend her if you take this class. This is my favourite class by far.

widget, you're definately better off at ubc. my comp sci prof does most of his work with c and fortran and lots of dumb ass ppl think hes retarded.

on the other hand, my friend is taking first year econ this year at ubc, and shes got the worst prof. no offense to anyone, but the guy is a weirdo. hes white, but hes the worst asian wannabe you'll meet, ok not really, i know a pretty bad one. anyways, this prof's website has hello kitties all over lol. ill ask my friend what the link is and post it later.

U. Waterloo is no. 1 for CS in Canada.
followed by UBC. Their geeks constantly win whatever

although I hate waterloo, because they said I sucked too much to get in their program (which is shit). Anwyays, pick UoFT, and if you dont get in try Ryerson which is also downtown Toronto, you'll probably have the best time in Toronto.

Okay, to clear things up:

1) I don't speak French, at all. So if anyone posted any comments to me in French, you're going to have to repost them - sorry.

2) SFU - ???? S* F* University? You're going to have to be more specific. What university is this?

From what I can see the top 3 Comp. Sci. universities in Canada are:

University of Toronto
University of Britsh Columbia
McGill University

Not sure of the exact order. The reason I am applying to UBC is because of the research & work that they are doing. Also, because of the people & faculty there. I am specifically not looking for a university based on their programming research (& knowledge). My research in 4th year has been on hardware-based DNA pattern matching. So I'm looking for the hardware side of things as well a little on the graphics (which generally have been using C or C++

I'm not too worried about getting in, my marks & GREs are good enough for that. It's more an issue of choosing a university that will give e funding and that has research in my current areas of interest as well as being able to extend in other areas.

I'm not basing my choice on where I'll have the best time, rather I've moving to Canada for 2 years (minimum), I want the best I can get.

It's still UBC as my no. 1 choice. Hoping to courier my forms over in the next week.

I might go to SFU, when time comes...

I have friends in both UBC and SFU... so they might just help me

in Ur opinion, who has better computer related stuff 9like programming and all) between the two?

Posted by apri_peel on Nov-09-2001 00:48:

it all depends on what you want to do and what you want to study. like at SFU you will learn java, at ubc i think its c++ but not 100% on that. in general, the sfu comp sci dept is pretty nice. them and engineers get the best stuff (nice lounge, cheap copy machine ($0.05) cheap pop machine ($0.75), movie fridays, pizza, engineers have a whole area all to themselves with comp's, kitchen, equipment, etc). they basically own a whole wing of school. i wish i could tell ya more on it but im only taking 1 survey comp sci course so dont know much about it, but i know for sure that they switched to java couple of yrs ago and there was a good number of ppl who was not happy about it.

Posted by hypronix on Nov-09-2001 07:09:

well I thought of going on with C++... tho Java is used in Web design (btw, I really don't know, can U use C++ in scripting web pages?) that's also bc I already know some, and I like the language, so it'll be easy for me... I really like this stuff...

I have a good friend in SFU, so I'll ask kim more about the possibilities... I am thinking of finding some way of finishing high school faster, cause it's INCREDIBLy boring...

anyway, thanx for the info apri, it'll prove useful.

no prob bud

btw, you cant use c++ to design web pages. (99% sure about that)
c++ is a visual language but it has other uses than web design, thats what java is for for the most part. theres also perl(?) and html, and a sack of other languages for that. the best advice i can really give you, is to talk to an info tech teacher in your school to figure out what language do you really want to study, depending on what you want to do with it; and then decide what school to go to.

You can't use C++ to code webpages, you canuse Java, Perl, PHP, XML, html and a couple of others.

It's quite easy to move between java & C++, there isn't a massive amount of difference between the two. Java is getting used for webpages quite a bit, but C & C++ are still mainly used for application design, Java isn't much.

However, judging a university by what programming language they teach isn't necessarily the best way of making a choice. At least that's my opinion. Better to look at a lot of other areas too. I'm speaking a little from the Grad. side of things, where I'm judging the universities by the faculty & the research being done. But even for undergrad I would look at the faculty and the research areas, rather than the programming language. If you really want to learn a specific programming langugage you can always buy a book & learn it yourself.
