Varitek is very solid. Although I think it's not crucial to hit well for a catcher, it's always a big bonus. As long as he is a leader our there, calls a good game, blocks the ball and throws em out.... then's it's all good. Just that 5 years is WAY too steep for an aging catcher (catchers get older much quicker). Could they move him to somewhere else? Sure but for what... to hit .270 with 15 HR's? It's good for a catcher but not if they needed to move him later to first.

Leaders are hard to come by though. Yankees miss guys like Tino and O'Neill who were of that sort.

Boston needs to be leery of becoming the Yankees in terms of getting too old. Pavano and Wright might not pan out but at least they are making an attempt to get someone younger than 30. The Womack deal though is a bit strange.

Mike Matheny is a heckuva of a good cather (couldn't hit a beach ball) but he got what? $5 million? And for 3 years. Tough sell for Varitek at $11 million and 5 years.

werd

i'm saying he's mediocre skill-wise not knocking varitek's intangibles. everyone knew about his clubhouse leader... but he sure did look silly catch wakefield

but, anyone looks silly catching wake anyway

Posted by trunks1022 on Dec-14-2004 22:08:

sorry, more specifically, hitting. not his defensive/catching

85% of espn.com voters agree...

pedro does not make a contender out of the new york mets

Posted by verndogs on Dec-15-2004 18:05:

Edgar Renteria, who ironically had the game winning hit inthe 1997 world series and made the final out int he 2004 world series, is now a member of the Red Sox

edit: forgot to add- Cabrera was offered arbitration, so whoever signs him will give the bosox draft picks in return. Getting a SS just as capable and draft picks too?...nice move

too bad cuz doesnt the Mets have good players on their team also? they just cant hold it together...

The Mets organization is so brilliant they signed Kris Benson to 3 years and 22 million. That sure made a lot of other teams happy once the pitching market skyrocketed for mediocre talent.

I'm thinking Pedro knows his shoulder is about to fall off and he merely wanted to get that guarantee to milk as much as he can.

Renteria is an upgrade over Cabrera. Agreed, smart move. But still, Boston needs younger starting pitching.

Dave Wells....opening day against the Yankees at the Stadium. Tough to beat that!

lol you actually think Wells will start? Do you know how many opportunities just opened up w/ the signing of Renteria? It'll all come together soon enough. The Sox now have the ability to shop around their star prospect, Hanley. They'll get some quality pitching, it's only a matter of time.

Perhaps but signing a 42 year old fat guy with a bad back to a 2 year contract deserves a "LOL"

They win the world series and now they are infallible going forward. I trust both Boston and New York will make some more moves. I know Theo is smart.

Matt Clement isn't gonna send shivers down my spine. Neither should Wright or Pavano for the Sox. RJ is the ticket and it does look like that won't happen.

I wouldn't put RJ out of the running just yet...simply too soon to make a statement on since we all know how the steiner is with his money. although I would like to see him in pin stripes and give the infamous john kruk all star game pitch to all lefty batters

since we're on the topic of baseball...what is everyone's favorite ballpark?

I'm from the west coast so I've only been to Yankee stadium out here in the east. I want to go to Fenway and Wrigley pretty bad. Field trip anyone?

Favorite: PacBell in SF

Purely beautiful!! Been to the old Candlestick many times but it was always so bitter cold from the wind coming in on the bay.

Safeco in Seattle is the one I've been to 100x. Number 2.

For tradition, Yankee Stadium. Number 3.

Rankings of all the ballparks I have visited:

1. SBC Park - San Francisco (Gorgeous, and great Garlic Fries)
2. Camden Yards - Baltimore (Mmmm...Boog's BBQ)
3. Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia (Real nice...too bad it's in the middle of a parking lot)
4. Fenway Park - Boston (It should be higher, but the bathrooms SUCK)
5. Yankee Stadium - NYC (Only for the history...otherwise it isn't that good of a ballpark)
6. Shea Stadium - NYC (At least it's not in a ghetto)
7. Network Associates Coliseum - Oakland (It still cracks me up that the center field seats out there is called Mount Davis )
8. Tropicana Field - St. Pete, FL (what could be worse than watching baseball indoors?)
9. Veterans Stadium - Philadelphia (Watching baseball in a cereal bowl)

Posted by ludawg23 on Dec-15-2004 21:37:

I've only been to Fenway Park and Olympic Stadium (lol paid 5 bucks to watch Guerrero on a group trip to Montreal)

I'd love to one day visit Wrigley, SBC Park and Safeco.

Been to Dodger Stadium. Best looking girls at any stadium. End of discussion!!! Just so you fit in, make sure to arrive in the 4th inning and be ready to leave in the 7th. Plenty of warm sunshine too.

Fenway hands down. Who cares about the bathrooms...you piss and leave.....you feel like you're sitting on the field, and it's georgious, and full of history.

ugh...they're disgusting

Fenway is a definite must-visit for the casual fan, but by far not the best ballpark out there

edit: also the seats aren't comfy at all

but I was there on field day Apr 2003..I had fun walking around the field and touching the green monster

ESPN reports Yanks close to getting Randy Johnson with 3 team trade with Dodgers. Yanks give up Javier "Giving Up HR's" Vasquez, Eric Duncan, and Dioner Navarro. Sounds good to me!!

RJ vs. Schilling in next year's playoffs. Watch RJ fawking throwing heat. I hope he sends a 99 mph fastball in Papi Ortiz' earhole. J/K
