One of the main reasons everyone was so excited by Oakie back then was because you never knew what track he was going to drop next - and many of them you had simply never heard before.

These cd's bring back a lot of memories....... Im sorry to say this but thinking back makes me remember how good the scene was and how crap it is now... Before mp3 was wide spread some of the tunes could only be heard from the big djs. And now with the advent of mp3. We all hord our precious tunes and play them repeatly on our ipod while going to work or on our computers while we study. Sometimes i think we get so hung up on tunes we forget to have a good time. I miss the days of stepping into a dark warehouse to hear a dj ive never heard before or one i do know but have no idea what tunes he is gonna play. Then be completely blown away by the music ive never heard or having that special moment during the night where he plays the tune ive been dying to hear since my last night out...

Yeah I totally understand how you feel Frost and its so messed up on how you guys lost Arc. The only and I mean only place where people are still in it for the music is Cubik @ Nation.

There's never guido's and stuff like that. As for shirtless guys that not even allowed in Glow. But yeah what I really care for is some new DJ's. The same ol cycle AVB,Ferry Corsten,PVD,etc is getting out of hand.

i know that, you didnt get my point.. i wasnt talking about what oakey played or plays, i was emphasizing on mp3 whoring by non-big name djs. read my post agian im sure youll see it.

I've only seen a couple of DJ's use mp3's (none locally), so due to my ignorance on that topic I'm not getting into it.

For as far back as I can remember it's been about hunting for the newest and dopest shit possible, so perhaps I simply misunderstood what you were trying to say.

Well, I'm not even a DJ now.

I just know a few of them, and their styles range anywhere from Tech-step to Baltimore House - I've always been an advocate of diversity.

From the get-go the top DJ's were obtaining the latest tracks via limited promo releases, just as they are now. The labels want people to hear their respective tracks from the top (usually meaning most popular) DJ's, and the top DJ's want to be the first ones to be playing the freshest shit so that they can remain in the spotlight and hence retain their positions as top DJ's.

It seems to be a vicious cycle - the same one that is prevalent in much of the business world - which is basically what this amounts to. It's the business of selling tickets, filling venues, and creating a buzz about one headliner or another. It's almost as if it's that necessary evil that keeps the entire scene thriving. If it wasn't for the business aspect of it we would all still be relegated to the warehouses and underground parties that were originally laid as the foundation of our EDM scene. Not that I don't miss those days, but I sure as hell would rather be able to dance in the sanctity of a nice, clean club, with a professionally installed sound system, without the worry of whether or not the cops would be cruising up in a paddy-wagon

I understand what you are saying about everyone having access to the same tracks now, and the only thing I can really suggest to you - that would help set yourself apart from everyone else, is to start producing. That's the way Gabriel & Dresden did it, and whether you like them or not, it seems to have worked.

As a side note, I was downloading mp3's in 1999. That's how I found TrancEaddict.com in mid 2000 (from one of Swampers ID3 Tags)

im guilty aswell......... Was a pvd set aswell ... And no. your wrong even the biggest dj's did not have access to all the tunes.... You could dig in a record store and find little gems noone knows about.... Where a big dj for the most part was limited to what was giving to him. Though some dj's were diggers....... Nowadays jz is the onlyone that is big and still digs...

Most of the old people I know just listen to talk radio

For the most part I just make my own mix CD's. I get tired of listening to just one genre, so I mix it up with breaks, house, trance, tech-trance, electro, d'n'b, hip-hop, trip-hop, etc., anything that takes me for a good ride.

My listing is at a all time low... I buy records that i think are hot and new stick them in the crate to dj with........ other than that my ipod is clogged with the sounds of a younger BT and oakenfold along with down tempo artist and hip hop like Lamb, Telefon Tel Aviv, The roots, Jurrasic 5, Gangstarr
