Yeah that sounds pretty much like the average innercity highschool. There's atleast 5 schools in this town that most would prefer not to attend.

Although the word "poverty" is stretched tremendously in the united states. Infact, thats why it can be so sickening at times, cuz these kids would be considered to be living a somewhat reasonable life in many foreign countries (and im not even talking 3rd world countries). Its a self pity party, and america has done a fantastic job at supporting it through welfare, public schooling, and various other things. In my opinion, as long as we continue to spoonfeed these kids who DO HAVE an opportunity but are too lazy to use it, we'll never get anywhere.

But to get back to the subject: most Dutch TA's have a higher education so our English is better than the average wooden shoe owner. But its fair to say 90-95% of all Dutch speak reasonable English
