most aren't doing them over here as the cost of transporting them will be more whereas with money it's easier or something to get that sent over.

Helping out

Swamper - thank you for putting this thread up.

As has been mentioned, transportion costs are a factor, and it makes more sense to send that money to help the victims rather then spend it on mailing fees. You could browse the list of NGO's/governmental agenies that are involved in relief work (Swamper has provided a list in the first post) and see which ones are specifically running drives for food/clothes/child services. This way, instead of giving money in general to some organisation, you could have some say in how your donation would be used. Not that it makes much of a difference really - any sort of help would do for now.

Another huge problem that has come up now is the incredibly vast number of children that have been orphaned. As in most tragedies, it is usually the young and defenceless that are hit the hardest. I don't know what it's like in Indonesia, but, at least in India and Sri Lanka, the social service 'infrastructure' is extremely inadequate and very poorly managed. If you guys can at least spread the word about this problem to your friends/folks/relatives, etc., maybe someone somewhere might just actually be willing. I'm helping out with a group down here that is coordinating this for the orphaned kids in India. If anyone would like any information, please PM me . I can also get you information on similar efforts in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, just in case any of you want to know.

What a fucking nightmare!

Posted by Digital Rain on Dec-31-2004 00:21:

I'm almost broke but I donated. Everybody should, even a small amount might help somebody. My problems seem like nothing now compared to this tragedy, the death toll number seems so unreal...

Thumbs up

Awesome move Del ....the best way to help is give $money$ folks.Sending clothes & other things is actually worse because of the administration factor & costs MORE to ship the stuff over there so just donate money...its THE best way.

donations can be made at any futureshop location as well. the company is also donating $50,000 and matching all donations made up to a maximum of $100,000. a tax receipt will be given in store for any donations $10 and over.

Posted by jasmyn on Dec-31-2004 07:17:

Posted by smh on Dec-31-2004 15:41:

Donated some money earlier today and plan to donate more in a weeks time when i get paid.

Death toll is over 111,000 now and growing, thats a little more than than the 20,000 they estimated at first although that cant be helped!

My heart goes out to anyone whos been effected by the quake's!

Posted by AirDrawnDaggers on Dec-31-2004 22:59:

I've donated locally, such a shame for anyone and the countries involved. Amazed at at from 20,000 the rise so quickly to now in exess of 130,000.

-Forever may they be remembered

Great thread!

I've donated what I could to the Red Cross here in Sweden..
And at the casino where my sister's working..the casino doubles all the donations that are made there by visitors, to help out in Asia.. I hope more companies do things like this!

Such a tragedy...

It is pretty sad. There was a story on the evening news tonight talking about how some islamic fundamentalists are saying that is the result of the U.S. and India dropping nuclear weapons in the ocean. Last time I checked a nuclear weapon would vaporize the water and make a fairly noticable mushroom cloud.

Didn't see that broadcast (wrong country ), but I've read some theories about testing of the HAARP-weapon too..

Posted by Magnetonium on Jan-07-2005 01:26:

I am not rich as I work minimum wage to pay my bills, but I mailed in for UNICEF 20 dollars in cash, with no return address, but with a note "FOR TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORT". If only everyone from North American could donate at least 10 dollars, that would be at least 3.3 billion dollars!!!!
