"eat healthy"...problem is that most people don't know what that really means. Some people have a bagel + low-fat cream cheese and juice for breakfast...or a salad with low-fat dressing for lunch...and thinks they're eating well. no protein + no fat = poor diet.

Exactly. Listen to MarkT.

One will notice that there are no dietary diseases based on a "lack of carbohydrates", however there ARE dietary diseases based on lack of fats and proteins.

One will also notice that there are no "essential carbohydrates". There are essential fats and essential amino acids (protein) - but no essential carbohydrates.

I say my 'own' diet because I did a lot of research on the ideas behind the low carb craze and found that a lot of them had merit in medical circles. A over-abundance of carbs for a long period of time will change how your body processes these. I did not subscribe totally to the Adkins or South Beach or any other diet, but created my own based on some of the principles...

Now, over the holidays I ate what I wanted...and I do have occational lapses where I indulge in pizza, chocolate and some other foods that do not fit into the guidelines that I follow....But the thing is to limit those to a weekend, or a night, and then go back to the lifestyle that you were on...

As I said, doing this I lost 60lbs and have kept it off for over 6mos...I have a TON more energy (now I just need to quit smoking) and feel GREAT!

-No White Flour....
-No Sugar, period...I use Splenda wherever possible keeping away from Aspratame
-Lots of leafy, green veggies....Spinach, Broccoli....high in fiber and nutrients
-For snacks, I eat a lot of nuts, Macadamias are my favorite
-Lots of water
-Eat at least 2 times a day...full meals....and snack throughout the day...I used to starve myself and then pig out in the evenings
-Excercise....Dance, Dance, DANCE!!!!
-I eat a lot of poultry (chicken, turkey) and NOT all red meat

I do eat Low-Carb breads and tortillas....they usually are made with whole grain wheat flour and have lots of fiber...

Initially I had 'cravings' for sugar, candy and everything....but those went away and the weight slowly came off....

So before you go slagging the Low Carb folks...just remember that some of us are not so militant...

That's basically the same approach the Wifey and I have been taking the last couple of years.
She did do the Atkins thing once just to see and while it did work, it's regiment, I agree, is militant. At least the induction phase is.
I just need to get me ass to the gym more.
I do intend to dance my ass off @ System on Fri though ...

OMG...that's exactly the same thing I did...and I lost about the same. Only gained a few over the holidays....now I started going back to oxygenated water, brown rice and wraps....I already feel better when I wake up in the morning.
But ever once and a while I lapse too...I can't help it...when I see ppl eating steak and potatoes or some fantastic dessert....it's just soooo hard.

For all you thin ppl who stuff their bodies and don't gain a pound.....I want you to remember us when your suffering that heartburn, Indigestion or diarrhea

Man... food is so good. Eating is like a competative sport to me, oh god, the joy of tasty yumyums...

All i have to say is, enjoy food... Eat that chocolate cake once in a while, have your favority pasta, eat that freshly baked bread. Just dont sit on your ass all week while doing so.

Hear, hear!

I'm proud to say I've made it to the gym for a half-hour on the elliptical every day after work, and it makes such a HUGE difference. I've been slacking for months, and now I'm feeling more energetic, and cardio does wonders for cellulite. That and green tea. I'm not going to do any weight training until I want to tone my last few problem areas. It really makes you want to eat better, too, going to the gym!

Dallas, see you there on Friday and Saturday!

Gym is great and yes it does work wonders, and yeah of course it does wonders for cellulite ...At my gym I can get free personal training guidance once in a while where my trainer would literally "engineer" a workout for me and that guy's amazing...see if you can get that too it's totally worth it My goal isn't to get BUFF at all and he knows exactly what to do.

By the way for every pound of muscle that you develop/gain - the body burns something like 300 extra calories per day think about that!

Was just reading the February edition of British GQ where they have a short little interview/article about Freddie Ljungberg...for those who don't know he's an Arsenal player and he's on all the CK Underwear ads - he will be the model for the new line of CK Underwear as well...

Anyway, here's what Freddie has to say

The diet: "As many carbs as possible, fish and chicken, the occasional glass of wine and lots of Coca-Cola"

Of course that comes with chasing the ball around pretty much every day - so do that and you'll look like Freddie

The brain needs glucose to function efficiently, and it takes a long time to break down fat and protein to get to the brain. The Atkins diet doesn't permit a high intake of fruits and vegetables, and this is contrary to the recommendation of most nutrition experts. There is also potential loss of bone on the Atkins diet.

So people, lower your food intake and exercise.

eye lub loe-gee-eye eating!

Posted by loca on Jan-25-2005 21:32:

I went to a nutritionist recently who put me on a diet which makes me eat 6 times a day! Considering i used to eat only once a day, it's kinda hard to force it sometimes

Either ways, this diet is fairly strict, special k or egg whites in the morning, low fat yogurt as a morning snack, chicken or tuna for lunch with either salad or brown rice, protein shake as the afternoon snack (and omg do those things fill you up or what), chicken or beef in the evening with mixed vegetables and salad, and another protein shake at night.

Now normally i wouldn't do the protein shake but i go to the gym 4 times a week so they help a lot. Apparently my diet changes next week though... He said it's always a good thing to keep your body guessing so the diet changes roughly every 10-15 days.

Posted by MarkT on Jan-25-2005 21:36:

^^^ that's good! are you trying to lose weight, gain weight, or what?

eating throughout the day is definitely the key, regardless of someone's goals...I've trained myself to do the same...protein shake for breakfast, lunch is 3 hours later and is chicken and veggies, afternoon snack of a protein bar of some kind, dinner is usually a ton of veggies (broccoli, peppers, carrots, etc) and chicken/turkey/fish (sometimes brown rice too) and a snack or protein shake later in the evening or after a workout.

It's hard to eat often and, in my case, to eat enough so as to put on some mass...but you get used to it!

where does Atkins say that high veggie intake isn't permitted? I'm not an Atkins disciple, by any stretch, but I don't think it says that anywhere...avoiding high glycemic index fruits and veggies, yes.

That sounds like a typical very high protein diet that a gym nutritionist would perscribe ...Am I right?

You don't need them...you can eat a can of tuna or a chicken breast and yo'll get the same effect...all these are supplements...supplements supplementing real food - so just shove another chicken in the oven lol

Posted by MarkT on Jan-25-2005 21:59:

supplements are not cheap, but they're not overly expensive either, when you factor in what "decent" food costs anyway. It's also quick and convenient...and more easily and quickly digested (which is good after a workout, for eg.)

my everyday breakfast shake is usually strawberry Muscle Milk, by CytoSport. ~300 calories, 29g protein, 12g fat, 17g carbs...and contains a vitamin/mineral supplement too, in addition to the multi I take every day...mixed in water with BluberryForce greens. It tastes soooo good!

I pick it up wholesale through a friend for $38, no tax. The greens are another $36 + tax...so ~$80 for breakfast for an entire month...that's not outrageous.

It's not terribly high calorie, but I eat lunch within 3 hours of that, so it works well for me.

Either that or buy a big tub of just protein...blend it with water or skim milk, a banana, ice, some other fruit (berries are my fave), and a couple of teaspoons of flax oil ($10-15 for a whole bottle of organic) and you're set.

If anyone's interested, I can get 2.5lb Muscle Milk for $38, no tax, or a big 5lb tub of CytoSport Complete Whey protein for $42, no tax

You are correct I go to Extreme Fitness hehe... they have an awesome gym!

MarkT: I'm trying to lose weight mainly but also get more defined and toned muscles

Posted by j_spot on Jan-25-2005 22:17:

oh and the other problem is
"exactly what is in it"
Im an athlete subject to random drug tests. We go by WADA standards, same as olympic athletes, so doping is a serious issue for me. Im so scared Im going to test positive for something I didnt knowingly take that is found in the supplements.

I don't agree reallyw ith the Atkins Diet!

Sure it will make you lose a lot of weight in the long run - but once you stop that diet and go bakc to "normal" carb eattingyou are goign to gain twice as much weight then you started at! AND I don't WAnt that at all - I am just working out at the GYm; and watchign what eat - smoking less gunja and NOT eating past 9:30pm!!! It's working & I feel SUper fantastic!

Anyways - makes you wonder if the creator of a Diet dies of Heart Complications (possibly from following his OWN diet & other reasons) then what makes us think that the Atkin's Diets is a good thing to follow?

and more and more I see Stkins STUff and copied Idea from other companies all over the place - frankly i hate the taste of all atkins stuff - I taste this odd chemical replacement

people need their carbs...

But the ONLY thing I consume that is low carb is President's choice Low carb/ calorie Beer - Very yum! probably the best low carb beers on the Market and SUPER cheap too! look into it!

ciao 4 now!

Make wise descisions & EAT HEALTHY!
