Even if you're not into tennis, the atmosphere is pretty crazy........the SWEDES and DUTCH fans are always a major highlight and are always in for a party ...

Revved up for F1 after this!!

Ahhh, but tennis is my thing. I used to teach it, and I was even a ballkid for the canadian open when I was like 10 years old. I never watch the aussie open cuz of the time difference, but since there's no hockey being played, some of the matches are being shown on 'godly' hours. I've only seen one of the matches thus far tho, Federer's match, and man, that guy is still dominating the mens. I love watching him play tho, he makes rediculous shots look easy. And he's more than just a 140 mph serve.

Your DEF not the only one dood. I follow tennis VERY closely (fanatic)
and i HATE Kournikova just because she's a sellout and wasted her talent

Not only that, but Sharapova DID win the BIGGEST most prestigious
tournament in the world (Wimbledon) last yr, AND she's currently
ranked #4 in the world - something Kournikova wasn't even CLOSE to.

Favourites to me?
Men: OBV Federer
Women: hate to say it, but Serena (HATE 'er)

Id have to say (unfortunately) that you're right... I dont dislike Federer, but Id really like to see Agassi win this again, or Roddick or Hewitt... actually, its too bad speaking about Hewitt, that James Blake lost to him today... man, whut that guy had gone thru in 2004 was RIDDICULOUS... i couldnt fathom how he maintained hope and perservered. Blake is another american favourite of mine

With both of the belgiums (my personal favourite of all time Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters) not competing, id have to put Serena as the mostly likely womens candidate

Oh, and ya, Sharapova TOTALLY OWNS Kournikova (tennis wise)... Kournikova cant fold a flame to Sharapova... this girl really is a gem and I cant wait to see how shit goes for her as she gets older and gets more experience behind her belt!! Shes the next great one, i think

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-22-2005 19:41:

Well, of course all the really big names in men's tennis are thru:

Roddick
Agassi
Hewitt

And the women's side of things, there are SEVEN (7) Russians in the final 16... DAHUM!

Very happy to report is 4th seeded Sharapova! Cant wait to see her play up against Silvia Farina Elia... gonna rape her!

Who knows whut TSN will actually show, but matches tonight id also love to see are:

Agassi vs. Joachim Johansson
Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. Vera Douchevina (go Russians vs. Russians)

and even Federer vs. Marcos Baghdatis (just to refresh my memory on his game)

i always thought that Lleyton Hewitt kinda looks like Armin Van Buuren ..

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-22-2005 19:44:

Just read a quote re: my FAVOURITE player to HATE/depsie, Serena Williams...

quote:

Former top-ranked Serena Williams spent months off the circuit with injuries in 2004 and returned when the Russians were dominating in the majors.

"There are like 50 players from Russia in the top 10. Every week you have to play an 'ova," Serena Williams said at Wimbledon last year, where she lost in the final to Maria Sharapova. "They ask, `Who're you playing?' I say, `I'm playing an 'ova today."'

Who says she has no way with words

ug!

On the woman's side I would agree with you.. serena has made the woman's game into a power game instead of a finesse game. I guess the transition was inevitable, but it makes for much less-interesting tennis.

On the men's side I love to hate Roddick and Hewitt.. both are arrogant assholes. Whereas Agassi and Macenroe (sp?) had their share of arrogance and outbursts, they weren't pricks! Agassi is still one of my favorites and I also love watching Safin (because he is such a volatile player) and Federer (for the same reason as Safin, but he's solidified his game a lot in the last 2 years - he was more interesting to watch a couple years ago )

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-23-2005 04:16:

I agree, the change in direction to a more "power intense" game was inevitable... but theres been talk from the world tennis setting body (name ? I forget) that they'll soon be changing (not confirmed, just what ive heard in discussions on tv) racket standards, requiring a smaller racket size, which will somehow lead to less power being able to be obtained... ie. so that power hitters like Roddick who most entirely rely on a baseline game will not be able to do so as much... (not with the same advantage they currently possess anyways)

itll be interesting to see where this goes and whut the player and fans of tennis think... could be quite teh controversy... but there have been lots of changes in the sport, and they dont necessary ever stir up alot of controversy.

with roddick... i dont find him to be a prick at all... but u prolly have ur reasons to think so... with hewitt i can TOTALLY see it... proly why hes not more of a favourite of mine, but i still like him...

Agassi is the man tho... i love watching his game of tennis almost just as much as Hennin-Hardennes! his shot are always jsut so well placed. and the man is in such amazing condition for being fuckn 34 or 35, its mind boggling.... and all u see when watching him is this sense of composure and determination and calmness... hes definately the tennis player i enjoy watching the most on teh men's side

tennis is for fags with shorts.

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-23-2005 21:03:

You gotta love Lleyton Hewitt's games... if its not HIM causing the controversy, then its an opponent he's playing

quote:
The third round Saturday was highlighted by Lleyton Hewitt's 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Juan Ignacio Chela. Chela became angry when he thought Hewitt's loud cry of "Come on!" was a bit too much celebration for an unforced error that resulted in triple break point in the fifth game of the fourth set.

He drove his next serve at Hewitt, allowing the Australian to convert the break. Chela appeared to spit toward Hewitt when the players were switching sides.

"It's sad that something like that happens," Hewitt said. "But, you know, he apologized at the net when we shook hands and I said, 'Just forget about it, mate.'"

Chela denied spitting at Hewitt, but the Argentine was fined $2,000 by tournament referee Peter Bellenger for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Never heard of this, but there was talk of using larger balls to slow down the game a coule years back (more wind resistance --> slower ball speeds).

Personally, i think changing the rackets makes more sense, but changing the balls would be far cheaper

I had no idea Davenport had more Aussie Open wins than ANY other player

impressive!

Posted by Jem_hadar on Jan-26-2005 06:54:

Im so sadden by her win I have no other reponse than to post this

Posted by MarkT on Jan-26-2005 18:10:

I can't stand Roddick either...arrogant is right. Serena...ditto. Notice that virtually EVERY time she loses, she refers the reason back to herself...if SHE did this or did that, she'd have won. What happened to graceful defeat? Granting that someone simply outplayed you?

- the move towards greater and greater power...too many aces and service winners and a boring baseline game.
- the trend towards teaching two handed shorts (some even on the forehand)...provides more control, but requires less "skill" than a one handed shot. What happened to those *textbook* Lendl backhands??? Now lots of players have less perfect form, but compensate with a two handed shot...weak.
- where has the serve and volley game gone??? I really really miss Becker/Edberg serve and volley matchups...or one of them against a great baseliner like Lendl. MUCH more entertaining matches than the ace/service winner crap we see today.

I still love the sport...I just wish it was more like it was 10 years ago.
