In the Mouth of Madness.

Exorcist does it for me. I couldn't sleep for a couple of days. I still get scared when Im in bed and think of that movie.

IMO, The Friday the 13 movies and Jason movies are funny to me.

Standard ones that have already been said:

The Exorcist
Halloween
Texas Chainsaw Massacre [both original and remake]
The Ring

I'd like to add The Shining and IT , but honestly, the books were way better and the movies don't do them justice. IT would have been far better if it wasn't a made for TV movie. ugh.

The Langoliers

This movie needed a remake. I don't care what you think. The first one was complete and utter shit, and I doubt that many of you were there for its original release in 1978, so don't even pretend as though it's good just because it's the original.

Sadly, I even thought the remake was complete and utter shit.

My favourite horror series of all time tho would have to be the nightmare on elm street series. I just hired Freddy Vs. Jason on DVD so I think I'll go watch that now and return with my thoughts on the take

Poltergiest
The Shining
The Omen

I don't find movies of recent time scary enough, they have lost their creativity and have resorted to cheap ass CGI to try to frighten us instead of using a creative story or a creative way to shoot scenes. That is generally how I look at movies today. I 'll say it before and I'll say it again...

Directors today are using speacial effects as a crutch instead of a bonus and it is ruining creativity.

NightBreed (Any horror movie set in Alberta has to be scary!)

you are correct, I feel the same way about recent horror movies ,they just dont do it for me anymore.

My favorite all-time:

Amityville Horror - Can't wait for the remake of this one!
The Fly (would this be considered horror?)
Halloween

Another one I like even though it's VERY B movie:

Pumpkinhead

i was disappointed in The Amityville Horror. i was actually hoping they wouldn't get away safe. oh well. but i suppose it had its moments.

What I like about it is that it was based (very loosely, albeit) on true events.

you know what, that's what really makes a lot of these movies so great. The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Blair Witch [even tho not really, it was hyped up to be], and numerous others. whenever you get into the mindset that something like this either could or did happen it makes the suspense/thrill much better.

Definitely: The Shining

Posted by Subey on Feb-01-2005 03:40:

Can't forget The Prince of Darkness.

Most ambiguous ending of any movie... took me over a decade to figure it out!

Speaking of Carpenter movies... a hat's off to The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness (he really likes to plunder Lovecraft!)
