-- The merging of the many genres of EDM... (Are you still a "Trance" DJ?)
Pages (2): « 1 [2]
im primarily a trance dj.
but as they say you gott do what you gotta do so if i wann take the energy up i start playing into some pounding techno or if i wanna take people on a journey i will satart slow then go to some trance then go hard but if i wanna make the people buzz ill play some trance (yes good trance does still exist
)
I think there comes a time when you have to sit down and be honest with yourself.
Whilst I do really have a love of trance admittedly the slightly quirkier type for the most. For your own growth and personality in the mix you have to cast asside genres and work out how to place your own personality in the mix. That is what will get you noticed for better or worse.
One of my rules is that it has to be funky. DJing well has more to do with getting people fired up than just being loyal to one type of music.
There are very few DJs that get away with that.
Play music that you believe in and you will be more fun to watch. Experiment but be relevant if you get my meaning.
Another DJ once said to me, "There are only two types of music... Good and Bad".
You should be able to hear if something is quality or not even if you don't like it... For example take Motorcycle - As the Rush comes. I can't stand the G&D mix... as a matter a fact I think it's probably one of my least liked tracks ever but I am not going to sit here and tell you that it's a bad piece of music. There is a big difference between I don't like and I think it's shit. That McDonalds/Pizza Hut track is shit!
Back to personallity, it takes years to develop into something you know how to put into your set but you will get there in time.
I think I have probably rambled enough and managed to say nothing... as per usual.
Cheers

i used to play a lot of trance, mainly either harder stuff, or more dirty prog stuff. for the last year or 2 i have been playing techno. i moved on to techno for 2 reasons: 1) its fucking amazing, its a very hard genre to get bored of because there is no rules to the music. 2) i love the challenge, technically, of playing techno. before i used to get bored playing one tune after another blah blah. with techno, its much more open for DJ input, manipulation, and fucking around with samples, cuts and effects.

It doesnt always happen, But Every DJ changes his/her style in time, and that time is usually 1-2 years.
I saw this change myself.
When i started spinning, I was in love with Trance, I still love trance, there just seems to be a major lack of 'good' trance in my record store nowdays. I have no idea why progressive is doing this, for me, I cant stand to spin progressive becuase it just seems lifeless, too slow and a lack of energy. Sadly, it seems like thats what everyone is 'into.' Now dont get me wrong, I love listening to progressive music; CD's, Sets, Live Shows, anything prog, I dont mind listening to it.
When I make a set, I try to play the music my heart feels, and I just cant feel prog when Im on the decks. I began a slow transition in my mind, it took about 6-7 months or so, but slowly, I started prefering tech'ish (Tech-Trance, Techno) tunes over trancy ones. I still love to play trance, but I really enjoy Techno.

I play what I like, regardless of genre, date it was released, if its been played out, etc.
Thats the point of being a DJ right? To share music that you like with other people.

i started a trance dj at the beginning of last year but that was already when trance was heading to a downward spiral. hunting down the classics was impossible cause most were out of print. im into chugging, techy and slightly dubby/melodic house music now.
started using ableton live these past couple of days.
got tons of loops from parents 70's and 80's vinyl looping with some random beats ive made its all very fun to trigger it using a midi keyboard making a new track every time then mix in a vinyl or cd live.
what im trying to say is ableton live rocks!

I started spinng progressive trance with some anthems. I didnt keep that style very long. I got very tired of hearing the same 7 tracks being spun by every dj. I was at a massive once and I heard delerium - silence spun by 6 djs, and in two rooms at the same time. I evolved to psy trance and dark trance. I'm currently getting into techno and funky tech house.
i think trance in general is the type of EDM most people get into first, and then slowly move into prog, house, tribal, techno, etc...
almost everyone i know that listens to edm does this....
I know some people that got hooked on drum n bass first.
Trance doesn't have the same subliminal value to me that it did as early as 2002. I play everything from percussive breaks to melodic tech house, so I guess you could say that the most interesting (and challenging) part of being a DJ to me is reinventing myself.
I like breaks, dnb, and hiphop
Well for me I started with House music, then in about early 1997 went to Trance with some Hard Trance and House splashed here and there, but alot of trance to me is sounding the same these days, there are still great tracks being made, but they are very hard to find in among the crap, but it makes for some gooood crate digging, I have always had a love for breaks, especially in Trance so over the last 6 months I been thinking and searching for good breaks and have been incorporating them into my sets over the last few months, I love trance but theres only so much you can do with them apart from going back and forth vinyl to vinyl, Breaks allows me to really mess with the music and get involved in what I want it to sound like, this is why I want a CDJ, to include Edits/Remixes of certain tracks that I've added my style to, and I have also been messing with Ableton Live for some time now, will be including that into my sets in the next few months.
Just thought of this too... lately I've really been enjoying taking tracks from modern jazz artists (Medeski, Martin, & Wood/Kyoto Jazz Massive) and pitching them up a bit to run them around the 128-135BPM category and using them as intro tracks for sets.
I know there is a whole genre of "Acid Jazz" out there that is basically meant for DJ's, but I think it's a lot of fun to check out even some of the classics... I'm thinking about trying to produce a track using the vocals from the Sarah Vaughan version of "Summertime" somewhat in the vein of the "Verve: Remixed" release, but with a bit more of a progressive/trance feel to it.
Just in the "things I'm thinking about" phase now... Cheers,
RJT
From around the age of 5-8 i had been to a few raves along with my dad while he was working, being so young while sitting back stage the music ment nothing and to me it was just some constant thumping noise and the dj was just some guy with wierd black round things standing at a table. Wen i was about 8 my dad finished working in that industry and at that time i didnt even have a taste in music. But then a few years later when i was hearing some trance again from flicking through radio stations i feel in love instantly. Since then iv ben into trance. i started djing a year ago and since then iv gotten into breaks and most types of house aswell and ifluence from friends and such has gotten me to tolerate rnb, hip-hop, punk rock. Trance has meaning and emotion and thats what i like about it. Say something has happend and im in a pissu mood i can never get enough of realy hard trance or if im just chillin out i play some progy slow kinda trance. Iv been a little sleep deprived lately so i hope that all makes sense (damn one month school camp)
What people got into first just depends on what was big at the time in most cases. Then after that people tend to evolve and find their own way and eventually will make their own interpretation of a scene and if enough people agree with it they will come and see you and you will get a name for yourself.
Cheers

I'm quite weird in my tastes, as in they havent really changed.
When I started clubbing in 99, I wasn't too selective on the quality of tracks played, but more the effect it would have on the dancefloor.
I go clubbing to dance first and foremost, if the music doesnt make me want to do so, I dont bother going.
I first started buying records in 2000, when there was a huge Hard House boom in Cape Town, so alot of my records (which are silly hard to get ahold of in SA) were nukleuz and the like.
When I finally moved to London beginning of 2002, I suddenyl had a massive amount of music available to me, and the hard house around at that point wasn't really doing much for me. So I hunted down classics, listened to as much as I could, finding many euphoric and harder edged trance gems.
This is still my mainstay to date, it's the type of trance I love, not what everyone else likes, I don't care about that, after all YOU need to love the music you play, and there will always be people out there with the same love.
What I have done in the past 2 years is start to incorporate more flowingness, sorta upbeat prog trance that allows for a flow into euphoric, which again allows a flow into more pumping stuff (ala Flutlicht, etc)
Not a huge variety (I only own one house track, but it KICKS ASS) but at the end of the day, buying from all genres is VERY expensive.
I don't deny that there arent as many tracks about these days that float my boat, but then the sheer number of releases has increased dramatically over the years, meaning finding the good stuff requires more searching.

I consider myself a trance DJ. As well as a jungle/d'n'b DJ. Oh yeah, and a breaks DJ. And a hip-hop DJ. Etc...
When I started out, I was dividing my money between jungle and classic trance, so it's not like I was a trance purist at first...
