Either way - They paid for the property rights and it's theirs, so they have the right to rename it. But I really don't think it's that big of a deal really anyway.

Thats because sadly you have no pride in your city.

I heard reports that the TTC is thinking about selling its naming rights to the highest bidder.

Imagine saying "im riding the Telus train" home tonight.

Well clearly you're just anti-corporate kinda person.

I don't care what the train is called personally it's still the same train. Nowadays they're painting them and the busses with different ads anyway - what's the difference?!

Posted by starsearcher on Feb-02-2005 18:10:

And by the way while we're at it...maybe if TTC were running it's business a little better...and those who handle finances at the municipal and provinicial and federal level were competent...and planners would have planned properly rather than put the money in their pockets we wouldn't have had these problems

Yea I don't think its that big a deal when it comes to public transport being hoarded by corporate names... But public transport doesn't exactly have a "landmark" feel to it like the Skydome does.

I want to stab Ted Rogers in the face with my phone bill.

Im serious too. Our greatest source of power is how we spend our dollar.

Screw them

And wtf do you care? they could've renamed it to Phat Mama's Centre, for all I care, since I hardly even visited that place (except for an autoshow every year or two). Who cares?!

Get a life, worry about things that actually matter... if that really mattered to you, go save up enough money and buy off the rights to it, and rename it back to SkyDome or whatever the hell you want to call it.

There's really no point in complaining...

Jayx1 reminds me of Lisa Simpson = Springfield's answer to a question NOBODY ASKED, or in this case, Toronto.

How? What does the word "skydome" have anything to do with our culture?

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-02-2005 18:55:

Its a landmark built with public money that is unique to Toronto.

Yeah, so changing the NAME really isn't a big deal, especially since "Skydome" is not a uniquely Torontonian word. The Roger's Centre will still be in Toronto, and I doubt people will think of it as any less of a Canadian landmark.

Skydome is very uniquely Toronto. In fact the government ran a contest to the public so that it could be named. The winning name was Skydome. The skydome was a provincial project of archetecture and function which was built to be a landmark. The ACC is a carbon copy of every other arena out there.

To tell me that its not uniquely torontonian is like saying that the eiffel tower is not uniquely parisian (despite the knock off in vegas)

Posted by Kytracid on Feb-02-2005 19:08:

Lame.

no wonder then that jayx1 is so concerned about it.

People who know it as the skydome will still refer to it as the skydome, so honestly who flippin cares what it's going to be called in the future ? Wanna complain about something...complain about people who make mountains out of every molehill. And no -- this particular molehill isn't historical either.

Well if it was built anywhere else, I'm sure the people of that city would have come up with something very similar, due to it's architechture and function. Hello, the bloody thing has a retractable roof, of COURSE the people would come with a name like that. The point is, it's name has nothing to do with Toronto except that Torontonians voted for it.

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-02-2005 19:15:

And the fact that it was a public building at the time.

Whats next? Shall we rename casa loma?

Posted by ShadoWolf on Feb-02-2005 19:17:

The thing is, SkyDome is a Toronto landmark. It's on our water front, part of the sky line. It's not just another stadium. Foriegners know the name SkyDome, but they don't know Air Canada Centre. I guarantee that people will continue to call it SkyDome.

It's also the balls to the CN Tower's cock. Do we really want people thinking of it as "Rogers' Balls?"
